Parental control software

I have AOL 9.0, with imroved parental controls. Not very convient when I'm checking emails, but I have other ways of getting online, be it at home or at school. Apparently, my mother doesn't trust me. I feel I'm old enough to say "IT BURNS!!!" and close the window, but hey, that's just me. Also, at school, we can't view pics here or view sites that contradict Catholic Church teachings. Stupid, no?

My parents used too have me under young teen in AOL, but I eventually hacked in the the controls and put it to mature teen....that was when I was younger. It wouldn't let me go to Yahoo or Hotmail. Nowadays, I use my parents screen name.

Because kids with weapons is the most moronic thing I've ever heard. I would have asked a kid the same question, cause quite frankly, kids with access to weapons scares the S out of me cause they tend to do stupid things... thats why she asked... now try not to be so rude next time.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude. I don't use actually use weapons. I learn a little about them and such. If I wanted to gain access to one all I have to do is stroll into Wal-Mart and grab some from the back. The only thing I actually have is a staff, but it broke so truly there's nothing to be scared of by me.

Luckly for me, my parents didn't know a thing about computers at all. They were aware of the dangers the internet has and did warn me about them. I understood where they were coming from and just told them that I didn't even bother going into chat rooms when we brought our first PC.

I don't believe in being restricted from doing things. If teens can be sent to jail and such like an adult, then they shouldn't have anything kept from them (except for beer, cigs and the sort of course). I know if my parents did put such things like that on my computer then thats when I put my computer skills to use.

I do know that should I ever have kids of my own, I won't install such programs on it. If I had the freedom I have now then so should everyone else. On the other hand... If I do want to do a little spy ware... thats what History and Temporary Internet Files are for ;)

Firstly, I feel so sorry for you, Mitch.

I had to use AOL for a while, because BT got rid of our account. Seemed we weren't allowed to spend over 12 hours a day online. *Cough*. Funny thing is, AOL supported Internet Explorer, so all I had to do was minimize the AOL window and get on with my daily site routine in the IE window, free from any restrictions.

I use Tesco.net now, £2 cheaper and I just gotta keep a tiny window minimized in my taskbar thingie.

On the subject of parents seeing wherever you go, I'm pretty much safe on that one too. I've turned off autocomplete, and delete my history on a regular basis.

Anyway, that Net Nanny sounds like the ultimate in suck. My sympathies go out to all you people who have it.

A while back, a parental control program installed on my previous computer system would have been a total pain in the *** for me. No, I wasn't always a goody boy, I liked to look at stuff and get into the crap everyone thought was cool, and obviously wasn't something that was too nice.

Soon my parents did find some numbers on the phone bill frm those "sex dialers" you get without even knowing, and they went off. They cancelled the internet connection, and barred me from the computer.

Though... as DeathKnight said, they soon found out that there are other things that I can get up to. I must admit, some of those thing were alot worse than what I was doing on-line. For my age, anyway.

I've grown up now, though, and they know it. They try not to put that much control over me anymore... though they still get damn up-tight when they catch me doing something they don't like.

They haven't installed any parental control programs on my computer. But they have on Austar (cable-tv), to block the Adults Only Channel. ...feh. It's not like I'd watch that anyway..

I don't do anything stupid nowadays. No more "porno" and the like, nope. I've grown up. ;)

You know whats funny, parents are all worried about their kids watching porno, yet you walk into their closet and you'll find at least 4 tapes of it. Kids are kids. They are curious... parents shoud just sit down and explain to kids what porno is and that at their age they shouldn't be looking at it and if they do go and look for it, then they lose internet or something... but parents don't.... they rely on crappy stupid unreliable "netnannys" to supervise their kids because they are too f-ing lazy and stupid to do it themselves.

Mitch what I don't understand is why you don't have AOL altered? (I think the word 'hacked' is to over used.) There are so many legitimate (non-virus/trojan) ways to by-pass everything on it, because it like m$ is **** at securing their product. You seem smart enough on a computer to be able to use these sorts of patches so why don't you?

As for the users of AOL out here at least you are learning the hard way never to inflict the worst ******* isp in the world on your own children. (Also for those who wanted to know the unofficial geek hate list goes Micro$oft, AOL, and RIAA at the moment. The top two haven't moved for along time and I think we all know why.)

---
Btw mods, my suggestion to alter AOL is not illegal if you use client side ways that don?t alter the programs owned by AOL. Though I?m not sure of all of the legal effects so it?s one of those ?use at your own risk? deals.

It's a good idea, Cloricus, that I haven't ever really taken action on.

Firstly, let me explain and elaborate some things.

Tony, Semjaza here on the boards, gave me this old password and old screenname of his he had. Using this, I would sign on to guest and get unlimited time and no interdictions. This went on for about a month or so.

Then, inevitably, they caught me. I was on at really late in the night, and my Mom just barged in. They tried to see how I got on, and considered I was using guest somehow. They tried to get me to tell them how, but I wouldn't tell them.

Then they took away my power cord. So then I bought one with my own money. Then they found out again. Then they took away my monitor power cable as well. This is how zealous they are about this. And when I am online, my Dad often screams at me randomly to get off.

I got my computer back recently, and since have decided against doing anything to try and intervene around the rules set forth for me. And so I don't want to do anything else as such.

It really isn't that bad. The internet isn't everything, you know.
