Heh, welcome to the boards, NightmareMage..

Well, you can't say the aren't "doing" a good job, necessarily, considering that the games have already been produced in Japan and have been released for several months. They "Didn't do" a good job would be more correct..

But anyway..

The game is no different than Mutation? Pardon me, but I believe that the third installment of .hack is not a remake of the second installment with some new sidequest features. The game advances the plot, right? And there may be new spells and weapons, correct?

Have you beaten the game yet, even? There is probably going to be a new character in there somewhere..

Anyway, this game is most likely intended to advance the plot some, leading up to the climax and end of the series, .hack//QUARANTINE. In a series of four, you could consider the third one equivalent to a trilogy's "middle movie". Even the Bandai people said similar to the following:

Infection = introduction
Mutation = continuation of intro
Outbreak = ends near the climax of the series
Quarantine = climax, end of series

Well, that was not near quote, but I recall a similar saying on the official site.

So, be patient. Maybe the game won't turn out as poorly as you think if you haven't finished it, and Quarantine will most likely be far more intriguing.

oh we have a "Mr. Perfect" over here... ok i'll try and watch my grammer... and for your info i have beaten the game and so what if it advances the plot? isn't it kinda obvious whats going to happen; wait, don't answer that... yeah i'll give ya credit for the "There is probably going to be a new character in there somewhere.." and "The game advances the plot, right? And there may be new spells and weapons, correct?" yeah sure a few new spells(lv.4 fire drop and lv.3-4 summons about as best you get) oh and don't forget the characters' appearences in the game... :rollseyes: that thing pissed me off! running around for potions and almost useless weapons... sheesh...

well thnx for the warm welcome!

P.S. you'll soon see i can be very, VERY debative if you haven't noticed already... :-D

Not to be a mod, NighmareMage, but you shouldn't call people Mr. Perfect if they correct you. This is a pretty formal site, so don't rush through your posts, and try your best with grammar.

More on subject, You get two new characters. They are
Terejima Ryoko and Balmung.
I don't really suppose it's a spoiler though, because you get them early on. Also, the game has a great story. That is almost the only reason I play them. You obviously only care about gameplay. These games, in my opinion, are based on their magnificent story.

If you have beaten the game, then why are you complaining? Is there even a point to this thread?

I guess you should follow on the story more than gameplay. People that like the .hack games is mostly because thay like the anime. I for one, follow the anime and the games, and hopefully will see the last of the series just finished in Japan.

I'll have to agree in that, if you haven't found anything new to the game its because many of the things that happen/happened in Outbreack is to prepare the story for the finale.

I liked Mutation far more than Infection and Outbreack. But we should give the games a breack until Quarantine arrives, then we'll see.

I don't have the third game yet, and am playing through mutation now. What i am noticing is that they really should have made .Hack one game or maybe two at best. They aren't really that long even if you play through thouroghly, and there aren't any big in game differences. Remember Final fantasy on PS1? They had four disc games! I think having .Hack as four games is half concept and half marketing.

Oh, let me assure you, I am far from perfect. There are people on these boards who post messages over twice as long as mine and can find flaws in ANY logic. And thanks for that comment, Arch.

But anyhoo..

M-hm, the plot advances. But "So what"? That's kind of.. Weird to say that the plot advances and it bears no relevance to anything, isn't it? Part of the essence of the .hack series is that it's like playing through another .hack anime series. In fact, plot is one of the most important parts to most RPGs, the way I see it.

Again, I stress the "Middle movie" curse. Of course, there is no middle in a four-part series, but you always seem to have a less exciting, but gets you even more hyped for the final one, right?

I presume that meeting the .hack//SIGN characters was simply a side-quest for avid SIGN fans.. So sure, it's not a truthfully productive portion of the game, but it gives players a special little treat for enduring the "trials and tribulations" you face to meet Tsukasa, Sora, Mimiru, Bear and the rest.

^_^ I'll gladly debate you anytime, NightmareMage. I am "debative" as well.

Ok, ok I'll keep my big mouth shut! All of you are right as well, but I hope the last one is much better... You are right about the characters and the "middle movie curse" as well... I want to give props to everyone else for not going off the wall too badly. Obviously this forum is of higher ranking than what I am used to. I'll try and follow your ways and stay "clean". If anyone else feels like debating with me than you are welcome to join.

The thing is, Outbreak isn't supposed to be different from the previous. It annoyed me when I saw the ratings for infection:

New origional inventive looks good great gameplay deep story

then looked at the almost exact same Mutation:

Dull, similare without a hint of origionallity

These would be on four disk sets, but first, I don't think I've ever seen a two disk set for PS2, second is the aspect of making 200 dollars (50 per game) instead of 75 for each set.

PS Iknow how it all ends, and all that keeps you from the biggest spoiler I've seen, is curiosity:
Do you really think I'm telling? Curiosity killed the cat you know... bwahahahahaha~~~
I beat outbreak in three days after having to fight this stupid twin monster twice.... anyway, I thought it was very short, but I think I'm missing something;

Aren't there supposed to be characters from the dot hack series in the game? I cleared the whole thing without seeing one in outbreak. Maybe I'm doing something wrong....

And could anyone help me kill Martina R? I cant wipe out that stupid little goblin and it's pissing me off! I still have level 3 goblins to fight.

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

 • 2 weeks later...
There were actually quite a few extra things to do in .hack//OUTBREAK. Personally, I liked
the Phantom Event, even though it did end up getting rather tedious towards the end.
There are a lot of extra dungeons to go to, as well. You just need to know where to look.

I have to say, though, that the main storyline didn't seem as long as with the other games, nor was it as detailed. I didn't like how Elk could not be used in the this installment of the game, either, since I had used him constantly in the others. Though he did make a surprise appearance that I liked...even if it had been short.

But, I know .hack//QUARANTINE is coming, and I'm definitely looking forward to that.
Using characters from .hack//SIGN will be lots of fun.
