Mei
Well, I was bored, so I decided to make a banner out of a picture I found. It's based off of the song Other World, from Final Fantasy X, though the picture has nothing to do with the game of song. I don't believe I'll be using it myself, but anyone if free to if they desire it. I didn't make a matching avatar this time, so if you did want it, you're stuck with just a banner. Comments, ratings, etc?
Haze
^__^ *chuckle* that is funny. i have an odd sense of humor, i kno. but i like the photo you used. where did you find the picture? do you know what it is from? it looks good. 10/10 ~haze
Guest Magdalena
I like the stock photo(although it could be better quality), but too bad you used a bad font.
Mei
Well, the image quality is supposed to be a bit scritchy scratchy, and the font is also a bit thin on purpose. I a bit unsure on what you mean by "bad" font, but maybe I'll figure it out soon.oo
Pagan
I really like this banner though its a little dark. I like the way the light shine down as if it is a ray of hope or something. The faces in the background are creepy and this banner would be great for Halloween. I give this banner a 8/10(10 being the highest). It is good but there is already room for improvement. Great job though it is really cool!!!

The font also doesn't match with the "darkness" of the image
Mei
Well, the image is supposed to be of low, darker quality. It's how it was drawn really, and the white color of the font is the only one that would possibly show up and actually look decent, so I think it fits. I have to admit though, this is not my best work, nor was it supposed to be.
Guest Magdalena
So you strive to do worse?
AzureWolf
So you strive to do worse?
You are missing the point, Magdalena. You definately need to play Silent Hill 2 or 3. Creating a gritty, scratchy effect is essential to any "freaky" picture. Basically, while you may start out with a clean, crisp original, that's not how the eerie product should end up as. She's saying that she purposely degraded the image (i.e., made it worse) because it's not a happy-go-lucky theme. As for the font, it is supposed to be ethereal, and I think it succeeds in that respect. A ghostly text for a ghostly banner: it works, IMO. Sure, it could be better, but can't you say that for every banner? You could smudge the edges of the text to make the overall feeling more pronounced. Anyway, I don't like the quote (I don't get it). Mei
Thankyou for expressing what I could not, Azure.^^ And by the way Mag, I don't strive to do worse, I must practice, so I can do better in the future. Hence this banner.
Shinmaru
I like the use of the Silent Hill-esque imagery...very dark and surreal. The distorted faces and the gritty look of the banner really add to the whole vibe. Nicely done. I've never heard the song that you mentioned, so I can't really comment on the quote that you used. But overall, I'd say you made a good banner.

The font also doesn't match with the "darkness" of the image
It's really not a low quality image at all. If you look closely, you'll notice that this is the way it was drawn; the scratchiness was intended to give off a dark a surreal look. In fact, the picture quality is quite good (like all of the images you use in banners, Mei ^_~), you're just confusing grittiness with quality. As for the text, I'd have to say that while there's room for improvement in font and the colors surrounding it, it does seem to give off a ghastly look with the slight transparency and thin lines at places.
Originally posted by Magdalena So you strive to do worse?
This is something that will not be tolerated on OtakuBoards. Personal attacks are subject for possible ban warnings/bans, and here you are deliberately assuming very little of her on which you know cannot possibly be true. I don't want to see this from you again. Going back to the subject at hand, I like the banner as always, hun. ^_^ Although this isn't my favorite piece of yours, it is still very well done, and I swear, one of these days I'll be asking you for advice on banners. ~.^

She just said that she didn't try to make the banner her best work, but if she only used it for a learning experience, then I apologize for my "personal attack"

When you make art, you learn from your mistakes, and this is what we are trying to do in the art section -- help them improve. She knows that it isn't her best banner, but she originally made the banner to try a new sort of theme and see how you all like it. If you were going to make constructive criticism from the beginning, you should have given her a few tips on the font she used that you thought was "bad", and that doesn't mean simply stating what's wrong with it, that's giving suggestions on other types of fonts, as well (i.e. "You may want to try using a gloomier font, like something scratchy to match the image"). When you said 'So you strive to do worse?' I took it to come off as 'So you create banners in order to make them more crappy?' If that isn't flaming your opinion, I don't know what is, lol.
Doesn't mean that you aim is to not do as good as your others... Isn't it a good thing to always challenge yourself and try to do better? I asked her a simple question, she answered it. There was no need for anything else, because it wasn't a personal attack. You really needn't defend her, she's a big girl. She explained what she meant, and that was that. I know your "married" to her and all, but pick your battles and not get up in arms about stupid crap. I really don't see how it was flaming or was a personal attack. I just didn't understand something, and I questioned it. I got my answer, I'm happy. And again, I apologize if it was taken as a personal attack, because it wasn't meant to be. O_o Your sarcastic comment was out of line, regardless of who it was towards. End of story. Who says she wasn't challenging herself..? She was just trying a new technique to see how it went; you are the one who somehow came up with the idea that she wasn't trying on the banner.
Originally posted by Mei I have to admit though, this is not my best work, nor was it supposed to be.
Doesn't sound to me like she wasn't trying on the banner, she just wasn't going for her best work time. Is it not practicing if you are using a new technique in your banner? Trying to do your best consists of putting together a bunch of techniques that you know and really putting your heart into it. It would be very hard to get any better if you never try something new. But now this thread is getting a little cluttered with these comments, and this is not a thread at which to debate, so I'll ask you not to continue this. I don't want to close this thread and prevent more comments on her banner.
