School/Sleep

I have a small question I'd like to ask everyone. Would you rather have schools open later in the day so you could get more sleep? Really it makes very little sense how some people have to stay up all night working on homework and projects and then get up early in the morning so they can get to school on time.

There are some schools who have a club at the end of the day, or the middle of the day so that students can have a 20 min nap. If you sleep longer than that you'd be more tired than before. Others are still speaking against it saying school is a place for work and home is for sleep.

Think about it. If you go to school, go to sleep when you get home, you could oversleep and then not get up in time to finish a report you have due the next day. If schools didn't make some students get up 5-7 in the morning to make the bus or make the first bell then that wouldn't be a real problem.

What are others opinions?

I was discussing this same topic with a few friends last week.

I personally would rather school start later.... I havr the belief it highly affects my morning class because i'm so tired.

with the added hour or so I could easily do alot better in these classes.

Also a sleeping club? Where can I get in!

I'd prefer not to start school later. I don't enjoy waking up early, but I'll do it if I have to. During the crew season, I often need to wake up around 4:00 in order to participate in one of my team's 5:30 a.m. practices. It's nice to watch the sun rise, and I suspect that most teenagers don't get to see that very often.

Even with additional arts classes, I still have a free period or two every day of the week. So if I'm really exhausted, I can just go find a free couch and take a nap then. My afternoon sports practices usually go until 6:00 as it is; if school started later, I'd have very little time in the evening to do homework and relax.

I want school to start later! The worst thing in the world is waking up and knowing you have civics first hour. My civics teacher is half dead and is the most boring thing in the world! Plus, I stay up real late any way, and caffiene makes me sick so I can't do a caffeine high. I have so much homework at night, it's crazy. I have 5 tests in one day. It's hard for me to study one test let alone 5! *sigh* I'm ready to quit. (I'm not going to quit really, I'm just ready to)

School should definately start later in the day. Right now it's 1:33am, and I'm gonna do some more of my Graphic Design project in a sec. Last week, I was up until 5am one night doing it and got 1 and a half hours sleep. Good one school.

So they could either let us stay at home more, or give us less homework, lol. Either way, it'd give me a chance to get some more sleep... 'cause I look a like a wreck

My first class is at 7: 20 AM, and I get up at six to catch the bus in the morning. I'm not complaining, though--it's a lot better than my old bus time, which involved waking up at five.

I don't have a lot of homework, exactly--there's nothing that should take me more than an hour each night. The thing is, I spend a lot of time doing other stuff--and most of my free time is late at night, when there's nothing else going on. (School, practice, homework, family....life.) So in order to actually have time to myself, I can end up being awake till sometimes 2 in the morning. (That's about the latest I'll let myself go during the school year.)

I'd appreciate having an extra hour of sleep before school each morning, but the truth is that it would only push everything back an hour, and I'd just end up staying awake till three.

I think one of the biggest problems concerning school and sleep is due in part to the students themselves. If you would stop waiting to the last minute to do the homework/project and broke it up into smaller pieces over time, you would not have to stay up so late.

The times I have stayed up late to do work (latest was 11 PM) was because of MY fault; not my school's; not my workload; not my _______ (insert whatever). I was lazy and slacked off until there was very little time until something was due.

Advice - If you do not do this already - Turn off the TV, turn off the messengers, and close Internet Explorer (unless you are doing work that requires as such). Just sit and do the work. Get it done and over with. The faster it is completed the more time you will have to do _______ (insert whatever, again).

If any of you get to take a Success Strategies course, this is something you learn - time management. Schedule out your time and stick to it. Once you get into that habit, you will quickly realize how much time you TRULY have left over to relax.

And yes, as much as I realize how much an extra hour would rock, and how much I hated waking up at 6 to go to high school (just last year; in college, it is 6:30, hehe), I do NOT want to go when the traffic is overflowing as well as stay till 3:30 PM (and in college, it would be 5 PM).

The earlier, the better. The way I see it, the faster you start, the earlier you end. Besides, the time I get up doesn't seem to affect me. This year, I have classes starting nice and late, around eleven everyday, but I still manage to wake up and get ready in time to be ten minutes late for my first class, which is no different than when my classes started at eight.

I get up at six and do whatever. It doesn't bother me. Maybe if you didn't ;eave it until the last minute, do your chores, do your homework, and go o bed at a decent time. i go to bed at nine or whatever, wake up at six. I can go to bed at 11 and wake up at six. I do not think it is that big a deal. Sleep is for home.

i would love school later , then way early in the morning,

but home schoolnig would be easier to sleep,

except you may not learn al much , so , don't go to home-schooling, unless there's some extreme reason.

Indeed. To AzureWolf. In that I would much rather have my classes earlier and get them over with. The afternoon is my favorite time, and I'd like to have that as free as possible.

Odd, in high school, my classes started at 9 and let out at 3:20. My friends who went to public school envied me -- their classes started at 8 or so, but they got out at around 2. And I always envied them, because I'd rather have the afternoon that much emptier.

But having to wake up at 6:30 or earlier does sound a little tough to me ... I guess it's all about balance.

Honestly, it doesn't even matter. If you're not willing to get up at 7 or 8 AM to get to class... why would you be willing to get up at 9 AM? I know I wouldn't be any happier with either of them.

I get up at 6:30 and take the L for an hour to get to my morning classes. I have some afternoon classes randomly, which are more of a pain because of rush hour.

I would hate to have school start later. I wake up around 6:00 AM anyway, and I get a basis of eight hours of sleep. I heard it's unhealthy for 13 year olds, but I've gotten used to it.

I always have numerous activites right after school. Piano lessons, cello lessons, SAT tutoring, orcheatra rehearsal, soccer, etc. If school were to start at 10:00 AM, end at 5:00 PM [!!!] my activities would drag into the night. Give or take an hour on the beginning of school thing; it's still too late. I don't see why people at my school are complaining about not getting sleep. I'm in middle school, and the most time our homework will take up is 2 hours. People in my classes moan and groan about 5 hours of homework because we're in TAG [gifted program in GA] and honors, but I've never had over 2 hours of homework, and I'm in all TAG classes. My sister is a Senior in High school, taking about 7 AP classes, and they homework she gets doesn't nearly take up the amount of time she spends studying for the SAT, tests, etc.

It's all called time managment.

Hah. This year they changed our school schedule, so school starts at 8:25. So, I can sleep until 8:00 in the morning if I wish. I do sometimes, but I still end up getting up at 7:00 each morning or so.

It doesn't really make a difference I'd say. I'm still as tired in the morning.

Argh, I have to be at school at 8:15, but I usually wake up at 6:35 because I have to get a shower and dress..... which leaves me about 20 mins of time to make it to school.

Middle, High, Elementary? Eh...okay.

I think, TN, you've had too much sex today...

That's the only conclusion I can come to lol.

That took me myself a long time to figure out lol. You used such a vague way to put things..I'm not even sure I have it right.

Instead, just say something like, "they should move highschool first, middle school last, and elementary school in the middle." It's a lot easier to understand...

Whatever the case, you meant to do it like this obviously lol.

Like I said, too much sex..

I would personally like to wake up later, for school to open later.
I have to wake up at six, and I just don't feel like getting up! And it just annoys me in the morning when my mom walks in and turns the freaking light on saying, "time to get up!" God that is one of the things I never want to hear in the morning. :angry2:
Also, it's always darn cold outside in the morning, double layers of clothes including my unfashionable uniform
But in my first period class Spanish, it wakes me up. My teacher asks, "Como estas?" (how are you?) I literally yell out, "Cansada (means tired) because I waked up at six!"
Oh yeah my spanish teacher would like to hear that every morning. But that's why I would rather wake up later. School is so irritating.
