Kwai
Its difficult to draw the line between custom/tradition and habits... Anyway, one weekly tradition in my family is tea time (Green/Ginseng tea) on Sunday morning at 5:00 a.m. I never particularly liked it, but its a good way to wake up, especially if its the bitter Ginseng tea. I think this has been some weird tradition thats been in my family from a few generations back. I really want to break it, but the whole history of it kinda deterrs me from doing so. Gentle
Well, this isn't a custom but it does seem to happen every year. At Christmas everyone on my mother's side of the family goes to my grandmother's house for breakfast. Then for dinner we go to my aunt's house which is also my grandfather's house, on my father's side. We don't plan to do it but it always ends up happening. Something else that was never planned but kept happening was on Sunday nights we had a real dinner at the table all of us. And on Friday's we go to get pizza, chinese, and McDonald's and some movies to watch while we eat it. Long, long ago when I was still young, every morning me and my brother would wake up and our parents would call us down the hall. Then say that we were going to the store. For some reason I still haven't figured out, me and my brother would start to cheer and jump up and down. We would go to Wal-Mart, then McDonald's, then come back home. This would take 4 hours out of our day. How lazy we people are.
Burori
Okay here's a beginning custom/tridition that my mother started. (Hey you have to start somewhere lol) At every Christmas eve we all would watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I've seen it since I was born and I plan on watching it till I die or when they stop airing it *Cocks shotgun* I'll make sure that never happens.. ^_^
duorocks17
Every year around Thanksgiving, my mom's family gets together and we draw names. Whose ever name you draw is who you have to buy a christmas present for. Then on christmas eve, we get together and spend the entire day together. We have lunch, then we go to church, then we come back, eat supper, and then let the festivies contiune. We usually don't finish till after midnight, which makes my little cousins wonder weather santa will come or not!! *giggles*
terra
For Thanksgiving, since none of us like turkey, we have alternatives. Such as Peking duck, or last year, a "game hen." ... My mom's ideas, not really a tradition I suppose. I guess I'm just looking forward to Thanksgiving, as that's my only break in fall semester. :p
Angelus_Necare
On new years my family and I play uno untill midnight (or dawn if we're really getting into it) it was a thing we did at my grandmother's house, usualy it was the adults playing, as a kid you wanted so baddly to just join in. When you hit that turning point to be an "adult" your night was made. Since we're also Irish (my grandma's full Irish, I'm Irish/greek) My family likes to get drunk, a lot, But they're happy drunks! Xyandar
Every year on my Birthday, I go to my favorite cousins house and spend a few days and celebrate there. All my family comes because my aunt has a huge place. I have been doing this ever since the age of 3 and still continue to:). If my birthday is on a weekday, then we celebrate earlier
Artemis
Every year on Good Friday, we spend the hours of noon to three in silence (try keepin' 10 kids quiet for 3 hours!!) It's incredible to have the house that silent for so long. We actually sort of look forward to it.
Kanariya
In my family, it started 2 years ago. Since my grandmother and grandfather live in Mississippi, they now every anniversary on October 18th go up to Maryland and celebrate their anniversary at my house. My family comes over and we hang out and stuff. And the cool/weird thing is, I was born on October 18 and my brother was born in October and week before on the same day of the week. And it's not really a family tradition, but like you lea2385, we order food (pizza mostly) on Saturday nights usually. Works with me, I love junk food. :)
Maully
Artemis, my family does that too. When I was growing up, for our birthdays, we could pick whatever meal we wanted to have and our kind of cake. Then we would go to my grandmother's house for the evening. Theat kind of trailed off once I hit 15. Another is that we visit my mother's family on Thanksgiving and my Dad's family at Christmas. Juu
I'm not sure if it's quite a 'custom', but my family usually has rice once everyday. I got sick of it for a while, but now that my dad's cooking, instead of the lady that used to cook for us.... I'm happy to eat rice again. ^_^;;;; And, we try our best to speak in both English and Korean. My dad speaks to me in Korean at home, so I won't forget, and I speak in English to my mom over the phone, since she's going to English class. (Which I really think doesn't have to go to... - .-')
island gurl
My mother is dutch and well there used to be this tradition in my family that every New Year the women would make apel flappe and ole bolle (Apple pancakes and oil balls- like donuts) but they stopped when my grandma died. We will hopefully start up the tradition again.
