His name isn't Ruffy, it's Luffy, Monkey D. Luffy to be exact really. :animesigh
Well its not hard to see where you can get ruffy from. In the anime I can easily hear Ruffy instead of Luffy. IF I didnt know that it was luffy I would have thought it was Ruffy also!

Well, although I don't know much about the language yet (currently studying it), there was this whole thing about there not being a "L" letter, and "R" taking it's place. I can't really explain it, but I heard it on the forums somewhere. In japanese, it's "Ruffi," and here it's "Luffy." It's in Full Metal Alchemist, too. Instead of "Liza," it's "Riza." Hopefully someone who understands will come and explain.

In Japanese, there aren't distinct L or R sounds, but instead a sort of combination of the two (or, more accurately, a mixture of an L/R sound and a D sound). So you have らりるれろ instead of la li lu le lo or ra ri ru re ro.

Sounds like those are usually romanized with Rs (i.e. you see "arigatou" written all the time, whereas "aligatou" is virtually unheard of). But--especially when it comes to names--R is not necessarily the most appropriate letter to use. For example, in katakana, the name "Lisa" would probably be written as リーサー. Yet if someone just looked at the katakana and romanized it without thinking about it, he'd end up with "Risa," which is incorrect.

My first discovery with manga and specifically anime was indeed One Piece. I swear I have an obsession disorder, because I pretty much breath, sleep and eat OP. I need to know what happened this Saturday's episode of OP can somebody help me out?!?!? I think I'll die if I don't find out. Also I'd like to leave this open for OP fans to chat about, what else, the King of the Pirates and crew

Now if you read my post, it says new member under my username. GRRR! It's like a giant "Hi! I'm a Loser Who Doesn't Know Anything" sticker stapled to my forehead. (yes sticker stapled) But know this I am overboard obsessed with OP and I religiously read Shonen Jump and own all of the OP novels. This is my absolute fav subject! Um, honestly I think that Sanji uses the sucker like a cigarette. (ie the way he holds it) So, .... DELICIOUS. I love Zoro!

Actually, it's Alucard
because Alucard is Dracula backwards.
But that's off topic. Remember that this is the One Piece thread, even if there were posts before that were off topic, try to stay on topic. (If you like you could always create a new thread about Japanese Ls and Rs but even that conversation died down a few months ago.)

After having seen the entire first official "season" (episodes 1-53) subbed this is becoming one of my favorites very quickly. I know a lot of fans of the show were bored with it until the Arlong arc. I disagree with these people. The characters are so damn lovable and hilarious that they definately bring a much needed spark of excitement to the classic Dragonball-esque action-adventure formula. I was hooked by episode 4. However, I do have to say that the plotlines get increasingly better each story arc, as new characters get introduced, preexisting characters get more developed, and the gags and fights get crazier and crazier. The Lougetown arc, with it's various stand-alone stories and smaller subplots that have killed a show such as Inu-Yasha, is truely a statement about how the characters and the world of One Piece are so enjoyable that they don't need a big epic storyline to carry them (of course when One Piece does do big storylines it's still totally awesome). I seriously hope that sometime in the next 10 years an uncut dub or at least a less-editted dub of this show comes out because the 4Kids hackjob does the series no justice. When the brilliant satirical short subject "One Piece of Crap" looks unusually friendly to the dub in comparison to what's really been going on with the show's butchering, it's not a good sign.

I was sort of planning to check out the first few episodes just so I could say, yeah, I had seen more than a snippet or two of it... but I'm feeling myself getting sucked in. Mainly because I love Luffy's personality. I don't really have anything specific to bring up at the moment, since I'm not that far into the show, but I'll probably revisit this thread sometime in the future.

Yeah...Luffy is in the classification of one of my favorite character types: the kind that would do anything for his friends and loved ones. He's also really freakin' stubborn, and will do what ever it takes to right the wrong.

Plus, he has the coolest expression. :D

^^^ Hopefully we will get an all out brawl and as big a Zolo fan as I am my moneys on Luffy.

The thing that discouraged me about One Piece was the length. It is 130 episodes and 40 manga. I also cant stand that little reindeer thing. His VA is worse than Luffys. Actual blood would have been a plus to.

No matter how many drawbacks the series has however I still find it addicting and enjoyable. With impressive fight scenes and a great cast of chacters(excluding reindeer thing) I can safely sat this anime/manga is one of my favorites.

You know what I found out... Luffy is like 19. I know it sounds reasonable and all but for the longest time I though he was around 15 or something like that, So then alll of a sudden I find my self saying... OMFD >.> its wierd though but yeah. One piece is like one of those black hole series for me. You will watch one episode everything is fine and normal, then you need to see the next...and the next...then BAM. You have watched every one piece episode in existance. Thats what happens.

Unless however you get the dubbed version of One Piece thats on 4kids TV. If this much happens you have only one choice, rip out your eyes or kill youself...or something less drastic maybe?

Not to jump the gun, but could someone tell me which episode Sanji first appears in? It's just that I don't want to be on the lookout for it if he won't show up for a while, heh.

Now that I think about it, Luffy is kind of like an older and significantly crazier version of Hunter x Hunter's Gon. Although Luffy's insane streak is noticeable from the beginning of One Piece, while Gon's takes much longer to become fully apparent...

I've learned not to expect much from the female characters in this type of series, but so far, Nami seems fairly cool.

Sanji first appears in I think either episode 20 or episode 21.

If you like Nami now, wait until after the Aarlong Park arc is over. By then she's arguably the most interesting character in the entire series (unless you get severely annoyed at the fact that her breasts get bigger and her waist gets smaller over the course of the show, though I sure as hell know I'm not annoyed by it  ).

A Guide to 4Kids Dubbing with Ziggy Stardust!

First: replace all the orchestral music with rap and hip-hip.
Second: choose the most inappropriate voices for each character
Third: drastically gut vital plot points and character traits
Finally: take all these elements and dress them up in the intrests of being 'kid friendly', thus destroying everything that made the show worth-while in the first place.

Seriously, I cannot stand the dubbed version... I watched the first episode, and as soon as I saw the opening credits, I died a little inside. This is partcularily distressing because the original manga easily tops my favourites list. I have unfortunatly not managed to procure a copy of the Japanese version of the show, but I fear if I do I may become trapped in a situation where I spend my entire day waiting for an episode to download on my gimpy-*** internet connection.

In any case, Luffy and ZORO (ZORO DAMMIT!) are the two best characters, based on their sheer capacity for violence and even comedy at times. Sanji and Nami are pretty cool too, and I can't stand... that other guy who's name I can never remember... long noes... you get it, I can't stand him.

Oh, and where the hell did that Reigndeer-dude come from?

Well On a side note is it just me, or when Dagger finally decided she was going to look into the anime that this thread has gotten more attention? Well the Colony must follow the Queen one would say.

The wierd thing that I find about the dub though is that while I do still find it poorly translated. The whole reason I even started to get into One Piece was because of watching the dubbed version of it. It got me intrested and so I looked on for some of the anime and manga then...Bam, I got sucked into this series faster than a black hole sucks up anything.

So that is just a warning to all of you who just wan't to touch on the series, tread lightly or your going to be so far into it, you won't know what hit you ^_~

For Sanji I think it was about episode 20 or 21 when he first appeared for the manga it was in one of the early to mid 40's chapters. And at the current arc in the manga Nami is quite cool having made her way through some really interesting situations the female characters seem to do well here Nami has quick thinking, cunning and intelligence on her side.

I stopped watching the anime after episode 60 or so mainly because I could not find anything after that so tracked down the manga and was hooked I plowed through to the current issue in a couple weeks. I eagerly await each new issue now the character development is coming along nice and I can't wait to see who the next crew member will be.

To the haters leave Toni Toni Chopper alone he may be weak but
he's a doctor not one of the main fighters he proves his worth over time no matter how silly he seems.
