Otaku Chat... ya or nay?

Otaku boards is an incredible site, but you have to admit... sometimes it moves a little to slowly. And this is not just for slow moving threads, but for making the site more.. interesting? Not to say that OB isn't interesting already... anyway, to the point. I think it would be a pretty cool idea to have a chat room on OB. Or maybe more than one so not everyone is cramped on one message screen. Sure, we have PMs but even they can move pretty slow. It would be great for people tossing ideas around, and may even prevent some spamming. If you're worried about cursing and so on, then there are chat programs that edit swear words. (not sure what they are though). I suppose you could argue that we already have AIM and MSN but some people don't have those, and don't want them. So putting a chat room on OB would give them a chance to talk about things with fellow OBers without the slow restrictions of PMing. What do you think?

To be more accurate, theOtaku.com (our parent site) had a chatroom for a long time. Several years, in fact.

But we ultimately decided to close it down because it was too difficult to moderate and it was being abused.

We decided to keep all discussion on OtakuBoards, for various reasons. The main one is so that we can moderate discussion...but also because OtakuBoards is the hub for so many things in our community -- whether it is a special event, or an RPG, or non-anime discussions.

And now with myOtaku as a further extension of that, we really feel comfortable with what we have. But I appreciate your suggestion.

What you would need to make it work is 3 or 4 mods, so one could be in it at all times. If you could do that, then it would work, probably. But, i wouldn't pick just anybody, pick someone who has benn on here for a while, maybe has been a mod before, or something. Have no cussing rules and stuff liek that, but make them hold it to the same extent as on here. And, if needed, ban a few IP addresses.

You can't just command a thread to be closed, you're not a moderator.

It's a good suggestion, just not applicable for OB for the reasons James stated above. My opinion of having a chat room here is that, while it would be a good thing, the instances of it being abused are too numerous, unless of course, you had a registration process for it, and I've seen it done elsewhere, then, abusers could be banned.

But then again, AIM is easy peasy to download, i suggest just downloading that to use, and it's free.

Yeah, the Otaku.com used to have a chat room but it has been gone for awhile now. When I went it was good for quite awhile.... then things went downhill. I did enjoy going, but we would need more rules if there was another one up'n'running. I've managed to live without it, now I have a great time here. ^_^ I really don't care if we have another or not, if we don't, I'm fine with the just the OB. The OB is the best place for me to go on the internet, so I'm fine with it.
Oh yes... Kyo no Ryu... you really gotta stop saying "thread closed". One you are not a mod. Two... it's very annoying, you've said it three, count them up, THREE times in this thread. It does not need to be closed. Please, don't blow it out of perporsion.(sp?)

I think having a chat would be a great idea...I mean some people aren't really good a mb's so they don't post a whole lot in them...or if they do the posts are either unbelievably long or only a few words long... They're better suited for chatting rather than message boarding.... That's just my opinon though..:D

OK... well thanks for your support maikiratori, but I see the faults in the idea now... like you guys said, there would have to be a mod. on at all times. I don't think any of us have that much time (unless you're old and retired). Also, even with a mod. on, there would probably be too much "spammable" chat going on to deal with it anyway... so I guess it was a bad idea :stupid:
