Long Signatures

[color=deeppink]I'm not saying that this is an epidemic, but lately I've noticed that some signatures are getting annoyingly long. With some of them you can't tell where the post stops and the signature begins because there is so [i]much[/i] stuff in their signature.

Has there been any talk lately of enforcing a signature length rule [I personally don't think that's a great idea and it's hard to enforce] or asking people, through PM, to shorten their signatures? Because it's annoying to scroll through loooong blabbering nothings when you want to get to the point of the thread.

So I just thought I'd raise the issue, I don't know if anyone else knows what I'm saying or not :P[/color]

We've talked about it in the past. I've brought it up in here before. It basically came down to the idea that mods should PM people who have generally excessively long sigs and ask them to trim it down. I've done it plenty of times in the past.

I don't think anything more than a few inches is needed. Some people's require me to scroll down the equivalent of page length is ridiculous.

I realize we can turn off signatures, but I really would rather not do that. I don't mind sigs, I like reading them sometimes and seeing banners and such... but people need to realize that there is a line with this stuff. After that line, I think you're just inconveniencing people. You really don't need a buddy list with each member on a new line or 5 goofy AIM conversations.

[SIZE=1][COLOR=darkblue]Yes, I've noticed this quite a bit lately. I think people should just put things they [I]really[/I] want in their sig. An example of what to get rid of would be a buddy list. I just see no point in having them in your sig.
Sure, I used to have a pretty long signature, but I have sized it down quite a bit. I had a terribly long quote and my buddy list, but after a while I just thought it had no point anymore.
I like to see banners, the clubs people are in, and maybe some short quotes from time to time. But honsetly, some are getting [B]far[/B] to long. I really hope people will shorten them up... alot.
I think there should be some sort of limit though of how many lines you have. So that's just what I think.[/COLOR][/SIZE]

[color=deeppink]Ah good, so I'm not alone. I don't want to be rude in pointing out members as examples, but [i]zap29[/i]'s signature is one of those that I'm talking about. Given, they're a newer member, but a staff member should take notice of it and PM them. Soon. Because it's that bad.[/color]

I just shortened my buddy list, I can't put it on anymore. Kinda long, it bothers myself so I took it down. I really get annoyed scrolling down the page still seeing that person's post, it really is annoying. And BabyGirl I agree, the staff members should pm those certain people, and tell them to shorten it. I hate those long sigs.

I hope I'm not one of the offenders whose signatures are too long <_<;;;

I just find it hard to delete stuff out of my sig because I'm one of those weirdos who puts a lot of stuff up, heh. I don't think that mine is outrageously long but I admit it could use a bit of shortening, heh.

But, yeah, there are a few people whose sigs are just way too long and full of too many things. It's a problem, but it's one that could be ignored pretty easily.

You don't have to put the quote tags above and below the quote itself. It also works if you have it like [*quote]haha[/*quote], minus the astericts (*), of course.

As for the sigs, I remember at one point (I believe it was V4) James had some weird hack installed or something that allowed only 8 lines of sig in the UserCP and if you went over 8 lines (with coding), it wouldn't let you hit the [Save Changes] button. I think we should bring it back. Chaos started something with these AIM convos in the sigs, so you can thank him for the idea, lol.

It also gets very annoying when (newer) members tell you something when you kindly ask them, via PM, to shorten their sigs. But meh, that member got banned anyhow, so it's all good.

Valen, I'm actually extremely impressed with your sig. You managed to fit a great deal of material into a [i]very[/i] small amount of space.

It's rather irritating when a user's signature exceeds the length of his or her actual post, but only a few sigs are truly that bothersome. Rather than adding a program that would limit the number of lines in a sig, I'd prefer to let the staff decide when someone's sig is simply too long. I'm sure they'd be quite reasonable about it, and it's nice to retain that element of flexibility.

Is this a not-so-subtle hint to shorten my siggy? lol.

I'll shorten it, to set a shining example in these dark times. Look well, Alex, for it is your sacred quest to shorten your siggy.

I'm not bothered by long sigs, in fact, I enjoy seeing what kind if idiotic AIM excerpts people put in there. But, if the majority wants their browsers to display better, then I agree to trim my sig, much like how women trim certain areas, I will trim my special area.

[color=deeppink]I'm not sure how your mind even began to think up a way for those two to be related, but I laughed out loud [quite literally] when I read it :p

I didn't have you in mind when I started this thread, PoisonTongue, but I suppose yours does sort of fit into the mix :P. I'm more annoyed by multicolored marriages, buddy lists, unintelligent sayings, random nothingness, smiley overdoses and otherwise. [/color][b][size=5]

[color=deeppink]...yeah, you get the point.

Well-organized signatures don't bother me, but I guess the disorganized ones do because I'm obsessed with organization. Organization is a must. Maybe that's the whole reason behind long signatures pissing me off...[/color]

Could be much, much worse... Made even more hilarious by her miniscule post lol

[img]http://www.otakuboards.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=510650[/img]

But on a pretty well controlled forum like OB, some of these are exceptionally large. Like I said, I've PMed people in the past, but if they do nothing about it there isn't much I can do other than complain to Charles or James.

[color=#707875]Ouch. That is one nasty signature. X_X

Anyway, I'm still intending to include a signature-limiting tool in OtakuBoards itself, which blocks signatures that are too large.

I think it would be best to introduce this for v7 though, because I have no idea whether current hacks will be supported on the next final release of Virtual Bulletin (apparently quite a few won't).

The next big hurdle is the fact that generally, we use hacks that are publicly available and tested. Due to the fact that Virtual Bulletin 3 is so very new (so new that it isn't even out yet in final release form), there are essentially no hacks available for the final release. This means that, in the early stages...we'll either have to develop our own software, or not use any until public hacks appear.

In any case, I'm sure they'll appear pretty quick after the release. But it does mean that we'll have to wait a little longer before these things can be implemented on OB. Until then, all we can really do is remind people to be courteous in terms of their signature sizes.[/color]

Dont worry your signature isnt that bad. Most of its largeness are short lines. I rather like reading your IM conversations.

[color=indigo]*points at own signature* Despite what it looks like, that's actually only four lines -- I can't wait till we can get another sig limit up.

I think people need to learn how to be concise when it comes to signatures. I think they also need to learn the magic of free web hosting and the [u[i][/i]rl] tag. If something's going to make your sig long, slap it on a web page and just put a link to it instead of using twenty lines for an AIM quote or whatever.[/color]

[color=hotpink][size=1]I'm quite proud of my multi-colored marriage. Afterall, it was pretty much the first and will probably be the one still there after all the other idiots give up and quit trying to be cool.

Oops, was I mean? I'm so sorry. But I don't take it back.[/color][/size]

I think keeping signatures short inspires creativity. After all, there's only so many things you can do with a twenty-line buddy list. *smirks*

Incidently, my signature right now seems unpleasantly cluttered. Must rectify this....[/FONT]

Got an issue? Here's a tissue.
Life is teh suck. Get a helmet, buck.
Mitch, stop being a little *****.

(Hey, that rhymes! You must hate it because of that!) ;)

Seriously, I ignore your pointless and inane posts (and there have been a few lately), why not ignore my (supposedly) pointless and (supposedly) inane signature?

There are more important things than getting pissy over a sig, Mitch, including becoming an actual writer and not just being someone who thinks of themself as a writer (<--that's called Poseur).

Frankly, I don't see what your beef is. You just complain and complain all the time. I've read your MyOtaku. So, what's your beef? Where's the beef?

Shall I pull out some of our AIM convos? Perhaps those will shed some light on your angst...

[color=deeppink]I'm not sure why you constantly need to feel more intelligent than everyone else, PoisonTongue, but I applaud all of your passionate attempts.

However, I would appreciate if this thread didn't turn into a squirmish because of it. The issue I've brought up will most likely be ignored or forgotten if this topic is closed, and that's something that I would prefer didn't happen.[/color]

It's not going to happen. Any further personal quarrels will be handled via private message or instant message. And, to further secure that, I want to encourage people to private message me if a signature is too long instead of specifically naming people within this thread for everyone to see. I've noticed that a couple times in here and I don't think it's really necessary.

Recognizing the point of the thread and doing something about it until version seven arrives is the important issue, I think. The message of this thread should remain a friendly reminder to the general public as opposed to a "witch hunt" that targets individual members and puts the spotlight on them. That hasn't happened yet, but I'd like to keep it that way.

That's convenient considering how massive yours is lol :p

In any case, I don't know what more can really be said in this topic as it is. People just want to have a pissing contest over who is right. No one is right. There is no rule stating how long a signature should be. It's all opinion and all you can really do is ask those you feel are causing a problem to fix it.

While I personally think it's not much to ask that someone shorten a large sig, perhaps they don't see what the big deal is about scrolling past it. Either way, I can't see something being so important that it should fill an entire 1024x768 screen. That's how big a lot of these are.

In any case, I am turning off sigs for awhile. Maybe it'll make it easier to read the posts, which actually matter.

Plus maybe it's just me, but I don't know why people should use AIM conversations as threats. Some of the chats I've seen in people's signatures are there simply to make that person feel bad in some way. Would everyone I talk to like me to put what they tell me about others here in my sig? Come on.

This place is for people's enjoyment. Not petty arguments against people you'll never meet in your life as it is. I try to be as nice as humanly possible despite the fact that so many people annoy the **** out of me here sometimes. I'm sure that some feel the same about me even. That's the world, but it doesn't mean I have to be fighting against them all the time and holding their weaknesses out there for all to see. God forbid kids act like kids and teens act like teens.

I feel like I'm stuck inbetween this mess of an attempt at a fight that never should have started in the first place.

That's a whole other story though, and I probably just did what Charles and Babygirl didn't want... so I apologize. I guess it all does relate to sigs though and I'm hardly one to get worked up over things... but it is all rather nerve racking.
