Worst dub ever

Just a random question.
What do you think is one of the worst dubs ever?

Yu-gi-oh is one of my choices simply because the main character seems so young, yet has such a deep voice. That's also my opinion for Kohaku's VA in InuYasha

However, SailorMoon's NA dub is the absolute worst I have ever seen. Terry Hawk scared me as Sailor Moon. The animation became chopped and the dialog was trashed beyond belief.

Whenever Americans edit an anime for daytime show, there are definately going to be some costly editions. I really do have to agree with you on Sailor Moon as the worst victim of this cencorship; stilted dialouge, cropped shows, that little 'Sailor Says' segemnt a the end of the show... Its as though even though the interesting details of the show were being ruthlessly omitted, audiences _still_ couldn't be trusted to handle the results without a 2-minute morality lecture.

Another hapless victim? Gundam Wing. After having listened to the CN dub, I will forever spasm at the phrase, 'The Great Destoryer' in place of, 'The God of Death'. I agree tha thte former phrase might have been offensive to those who are deeply religious (and so probably wouldn't have been watching the show), but was there really need to make Duo sound like a peice from that Battleship game? I ask you.

There's a reason for that: he is two different people in the same body. The short version has a voice suited ot his age, the taller one is much much older and hence has a deeper voice.

I think one of themost frustrating dubs I've seen would be Cardcaptors, simply because the characters speak so slowly. I don't mind the dialogue as such (but Tori and Julian not being a gay couple lost a whole range of ideas), or the acting, but the slow speech really annoyed me at times. I still like it, but I've not experienced a great range of anime yet. The same goes for the three-episode movie thing of Rayearth to some extent (made by the same people, funnily enough).

As for worst, probably The Winds of Amnesia. I just didn't like it, heh.

Oh my gosh, this is the easiest question I've ever been asked.

Dragon Ball Z, hands down.

That is the worst dub I've ever heard in my life. The voices are stupid, they change from season to season, and all the villians have that same stupid "gruff" sounds going on. I don't know, it just bothers the heck out of me.

You can say that again. With the extreme violence of this show it was NEVER meant for CN. Maybe more people would like it if they hadnt taken it. At first they werent even aloud to say "die"! Can you believe that?

In terms of voices, probably Crest of the Stars. >_< Well... it's not really the sound of the voices, it's the acting that's bad. I could tell was horrible the first time I heard it, and I'm usually pretty lenient with judging dubs.

Content wise, there are a lot of bad ones. Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Yu Gi Oh, and many others.

OMG the Rurouni Kenshin OVA/movie dubs.....EWWWWWWWWWW ANd they re named it Samurai X...it sounded like #### to me seriously
That's funny. In my opinion, Trust & Betrayal were far superior to the Rurouni Kenshin TV series. The OAVs were definitely intended for a more mature, sophisticated audience. Their dub was certainly adequate, although it lacked the depth and emotional complexity of the Japanese voice track.

The worst dub I've ever heard is that of the Vampire Princess Miyu OAVs, which is probably due to the fact they were dubbed much earlier than many newer series.

I'm inclined to argue that the poor quality of the Yu-Gi-Oh dub reflects badly not upon its English voice actors, but upon the show itself.

i hate dubs for two reasons....one the actresses and actors are mostly REALLY BAd and also they BUTCHER the script...i know that to re-dub something you need to change the script but some companies *cough* ADV*cough* COMPLETELY change the script...like in Orphen and that just bugs me to no end....

I thought ADV did a really good job Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, and wouldn't have even thought Orphen was poorly dubbed until this comment.

So far the worst dub I've seen is the Tenchi Muyo OAV, and you can tell this without even seeing the original. At many instances it seemed so obvious what the characters were "really" meant to be saying. Also at times many voices weren't synchronised well with the mouth movements.

I'm inclined to agree that Dragonball Z was poorly dubbed, but it was still enjoyable in it's own right (as is Bruce Faulconer's music which I quite enjoy, in spite of many claims of it not being as good as the original).

I've never really liked DBZ. Maybe it was the NA opening. I always thought that the guy (purple looking I can't think of his name right now) sounded like Him from the PowerPuff girls.

Sailor Moon is still at the top of my list-the dub was so bad it was almost funny at times. Like say-Unazuki asking Usagi-What's up Dawg? Also, when DiC would do the Sailor Says at the end of each episode did anyone notice that scenes which had been deleted from the show would pop-up like oh, maybe Umino (I'm obsessed with the U named characters!) getting smacked with a ribbon.

I'm torn with the Gundam Wing Dub. Yes, they did end up changing Duo's name from Shinigami to The great destroyer, but atleast the voices weren't too scary and the animation wasn't completely chopped up. Hell, I can still watch the dubs without laughing at them!

I'd have to say Rorouni Keshin. There's alot more blood and suff than on the CN. They should atleats show them on adult swim the unedited ones. I mean it sucks. They take as much of the violence and "bad" words as they think out as mch as possible without actuall taking out the all the action.

I agree with Dagger on this one, the Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal we great dubs. Much better than the RK series and a lot of other dubs out there. Also I have to defend ADV here, they are a very good dubbing company, and they have some of the best dubbed series' around.

For me the worst dub would be the Pilot Candidate series that aired on Adult Swim last year. The voices matched the characters, but it looked like an old Gozilla movie (dub wise, not animation quality) and the dialouge was about on par with DBZ. Bleh.

Yay ^_^ I liked the Tokyo 2040 series. Although some bits of the dialogue were changed, I think the English was probably better. But then, I tend to prefer listening to dubs as opposed to subs anyway, unless they're incredibly bad. Sometimes the Japanese syntax and semantics just throw me completely, especially if it's a dramatic moment. It's times like that I prefer listening to an English translation.

I agree with you there. Another thing that bugs me a little is when they over dub alcohol to being tea. Unless it's Japanese tradition to keep tea in wine bottles, that is.

I was going to mention the DragonBall series, but I've not actually watched enough of it to pass an educated judgement on the dub. I just don't like it anyway, heh.

As for the Yu-Gi-Oh dub... yeah, a lot of things are glossed over, dubbed and airbrushed out (like handguns, for instance. At one point two bodyguards were just pointing their hands at this guy, telling him to freeze. Those index fingers can be vicious, I guess.) In comparison to the original version it's tame, but I still enjoy it anyway. It's better than nothing *shrugs*

Probably either and both. With dubbing usually comes editing, although general censoring by various channels will come into that too (The UK does pretty well for uncut versions of Eva and Outlaw Star).

As for Tenchi and Cardcaptors, I can only go by what I've seen so far- it's good that they're releasing uncut and possibly redubbed versions, but as I've not seen them yet I can't say how bad they aren't. If that makes sense.
