Social Deviance

Ok, here's a question for all of you who have or are taking a Sociology class. My project for the weekend is to commit an act of social devience, that is, break a social norm and then write a paper based on peoples reactions. The only problem is tbat I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone have any good suggestions that wont land me in jail?

Say hello to people walking past; in a packed city main street with business men and women. You can also do it wearing random every day clothes and then in a suite and gage the different reactions to first off saying hello and then secondly which stereotype people are most interested in saying hello too. Though make sure you do the "hello" genuinely and in a "walk-by" fashion, not too friendly or engaging but enough for the other person to know you are expecting a quick reply before you're out of their range.

Hope that helps; nice, simple and markers can relate to it.

Walk by singing. Sing as you walk down the street, when people look at you, look back and smile, nod, or ask if they know the song. Most people don't talk as they walk down the street. Doing something so odd, yet entirely within your rights will guarantee stares, and a multitude of reactions. See what happens.

Anyhow, thats my take on things.

Or you could do the old Sweet and Sour. Wave at people in other cars. Note whether they wave back, ignore you, or give you a bad look / the finger.

Sit down at a restaurant with a cell phone, and have someone call it constantly without answering.

Or you could talk on a cell phone really, really loudly in a quiet place. People hate that.

Walk the wrong way up or down an escelator a couple of times.

Be really rowdy in a grocery story and throw stuff around.

..there's all sorts of fun things you could do, and you're able to excuse it as an 'assignment', how cool ^_~

Ah, the memories. On band trips/going to dance competitions, we would always hang out the bus windows and wave at the cars going by to see how they would react. It's quite disturbing how many people will give you the finger for NO REASON! It's even more fun to get the truckers to honk, though. Gotta love those air horns. My dad used to be a trucker, you know. His rig's name was Shoog and I was the one who had to wash that thing. It took a LONG time, and you had to climb up on it. Gah, I got so sunburnt doing that...

Do you have alot of experience with that or what? I know that I positively hate cell phones. There was an article in The Red & Black today about cell phones in quiet/study areas. I overhear some of the most stupid and annoying conversations. I'm beginning to think that the college world wouldn't be able to survive without a cell phone. Bah, it annoys me so badly.

As for the topic at hand, I think the idea of just being nice to people is good. The smiling thing, that should do the trick. Smile at people and see if they smile back. That's something I like to do. Whether you realize it or not, people say that when someone smiles at them, it makes the feel good, and it makes them feel better if they were having a rough day. ^_^

Part 1: Well...I personally have to have a cell phone because we don't get set up in dorms or have specific phone numbers. We actually have to pay for our phone service through SBC, and there is a $30 charge if you move [from the 93003 zip code in Ventura to the 93001] because you have to change numbers. Having a cell phone is so much easier than having to deal with those stupid SBC people. Plus, you don't get huge bills for long distance [for me it's from Cali to Michigan], with cell phones it's all included in your monthly plan, which is nice!

However, there are times when I hate my cell phone. I tend to leave it at home if I'm going to the boostore, and I have been leaving it on vibrate all the time now. I hate ring tones on older phones [like mine] that are songs because they're just high pitched and fake sounding and annoying. If my phone isn't on vibrate, it's on a normal phone ring. There's nothing worse than someone who can't reach their phone when it's playing a really loud, obnoxious song in public!

Part 2: I always feel good when I tell someone hi, too :) I was passing these two eldery folk on the street one day and I was just like, "Hi!" and gave them this big smile and they were so friendly and cute. It definitely feels good.

You could always go in drag. That's what my brother did. My god, he was an ugly woman. I wore the same clothes for 3 days. I bathed and washed them, of course, but no one else knew that. For another Soc. class, (I have a minor in it) I wore all my clothes inside out. Social deviace is easy...

You could dress as someone in "Kiss" would dress and walk down the street sticking your tounge out at everybody. Though, when I did that I caused a little bit more 'reaction' than I was meaning. Then there is the most recent one I have come up with, it is to go down the street in a turban and speak Arabic to people. I got "A bunch" of halairious reactions from people.

Instead of waving at someone going passed, point at them with an angry face.

Make a star or half a jumping jack in front of someone. I do this everyday, and the reaction is usually "What are you on?" or they'll be like "Why are you such a freak?". If they ask this, just stare at them in the same pose. It is best if you just walk into a store and do it. Or you could ring someones doorbell, and then make the star. And don't crack up. If they get mad, say you're an artist. They'll understand.

Hide behind bushes late at night, and when people come by, just walk out, but don't say anything stupid like "boo" or anything like that. Just walk out as if you didn't know he was there.

Oh...what memories. And still counting.

(Yes, these were all done by me, for various reasons.)

Idea #1) Walk into Wal*Mart, or whichever local general store you have, like Walgreens or Target. Ask everyone you come across if they know where sex toys and/or jock straps can be found. Gauge their reactions. This is especially amusing if you ask the old people in the front of Wal*Mart whose job it is to greet people coming in and leaving. I'm not sure that woman even knew what I meant by a sex toy...lmao.

Idea #2) This actually came from a song. I forget which, I think it was from the Dave Matthews Band. Go up to random people in the street and ask them for a hug. See generally what kind of people will and won't give you a hug. It's quite intresting, and hey, everybody (well...most everbody. unless you're some weirdo.) likes a hug. ^-~

Idea #3) Go into a video store. Hide in the video game section. As soon as someone comes into the video game section, start quoting things from FF, Zelda, Sonic, The Matrix, etc. See how many of them respond with either a) another quote, b) a conversation about that game/movie, or c) give you and odd stare and move along, avoiding your stare. You'd be suprised how many video game fanatic friends I've made that way.

And there's countless more. I'd be here all day if I tried to reaccount every single one. Use your imagination (oh jebus, now the Barney memories start), the possiblities are endless. Just like Kodak. ^-^

Oh I sincerely wish I had this teacher.

1) Go to your local walmart and buy a dozen or so pieces of ceramic. While in obviously public and crowded places, smash one on the ground. Observe peoples reactions by glaring at them all.

2) Go to your local supermarket and pretend you do not understand english well but want to find a product. Randomly switch languages (i.e. Spanish to French. German to Swedish.) and see if people notice. If they don't, see how long you can get it to last.

Lol... I saw a tv show that is almost dedicated entirely to socail deviency. (Trigger Happy tv I think) Anyway, try this one on for size: dress as the grim reaper and go door to door asking if (insert name here) is there.. or even just stand on a corner and stare at a group of people (wearing your mask of course) and just look at your watch every minute or so, and keep staring. Lmao, that would rock!

Hey guys, thanx for the ideas. Becuase I'm pressed for time because of work, I decided I'm going to have a picnic on the floor of the mall where I work right infront of the giant Christmas Tree. I've got a basket, food, blanket, big umbrella and some other odds 'n ends. I wish I had the time to do something more in depth, but that can wait for my final. Thanx for the suggestions again!

(gives the thumbs up sign)
Yep, that'll work. I'd be one of the people to either give a wird look, or come and join you. Lol. Ah... what fun. Just for the heck of it, when I can actually go somewhere that has an elevator, I'm going to (in complete anonymity, of course) turn around, face to back, grin, and in the deepest, hoarsest voice I have, say, "I need a new host...." and just look at everybody... lol.
