Opinionated African History Question

For some strange reason, attached to a test I recently got back, there was a paper giving an optional extra assignment. Appearanlty the teacher thought I needed to boost the grade a little. (Which is pretty true heh)

Anyways, it asks to write a few pages (typed, as usual) on why the African slave trade was beneficial to Africa.

What?? I can't really think of anything. Does anyone here have any ideas?

By the way, it is going to be even harder because my teacher is a guy from Uganda who has an extreme dislike for Europeans and Americans (excluding me.)

Well, there was that whole aspect of it that involved Africans selling other Africans into slavery.... I don't know, though. I can't really see that as any sort of an asset for the continent as a whole. Maybe as an economic boost? As hideously callous as that is, it's one of the few benefits (besides culture spread) that I can imagine.

Obviously your teacher is racially inclined, as most are. But he seems arced even stranger since you said he was from...Uganda? Wherever that is.

It's really fishy. I'd talk to your school conselors...otherwise just not do it altogether.

I wouldn't write something like that. That's like playing Devil's advocate on a whole different level.

The assignment sound weird and where is Uganda? But I`ll give you an answer.

Like Cahoots34 said, the people came and they got Africans to capture their enimies for them and the Africans brought their enemies back to the people in exchange for money, weponds, etc. so basicly it was an economic thing.(That`s what I learned.)

However this thing sounds strange.

That's what I put, and I said another thing was that major European languages began to be spoken in wide areas. Before that, every single ethnic group had a different language. It helped communication.

Also, its not something fishy. It was to make us think and to see another viewpoint of it. My school is all about breaking things down and analyzing them. I didn't find it weird, or objectional or anything like that, just difficult to think of enough things to write down and wax on.

It's only on how it could possibly have been beneficial to Africa. It was FAR FAR FAR from an economic boost for Africa, in fact, it was quite the opposite.

Another thing, my teacher is VERY far from being racist. In fact, he holds quite a grudge against Europeans and Americans. It's not shady in the least bit.

Sara..Err I mean Dagger, back me up on this!

Just write a paper about how it both helped and hurt Africa. If he doesn't give you credit then complain to your principle saying you felt uncomfortable writing this paper. Say that you felt conflicted since you knew of his tendencies against whites.

Just thought since no one knew where Uganda is I thought I'd tell you all.Uganda is a small African country that is above Rwanda. It's toward the center of the country and lies not to far south of the Sahah desert.

I had to memerize all the countries in Africa and Europe last year.

And me I wouldn't do the assignment. But that's just me.

Like he said.

To clarify--it's not as though our teacher holds some kind of racial grudge against Caucasians. He's actually a very nice guy. And I doubt that this was supposed to be some kind of trap; he was probably just trying to make the assignment as difficult as possible.

Well, he certainly succeeded in accomplishing that. Much as I've racked my brains, I can't possibly think of any reasons which might suggest that the Mid-Atlantic slave trade benefited Africa.

There really aren't many, but then again, the Africans who traded captured people were getting something in the trade. (not that this is how all slaves originated)

However, I don't really think this is a straight forward assignment... sounds like a trick.

I would write a paper about how it only benefited the evil white man:flaming:. Then your sure to get a good grade.

Yes, that would get me a good grade if that were the assignment. Anyways I wrote it and I e-mailed it to him. I'll see what I get on it. Hopefully it will raise my previously received test score.

But Dagger doesn't need to do it, she's too good for it.... :p

It brought a ton of new technology to Africa. Slaves were mainly traded for guns and farming tools that helped stabalize a very nomadic country.

It helped encourage economic trade after the slave trade ended(however, this is very debatable because most of the people in charge of large African companies are of European decent), especially diamonds...

That is pretty much the extent of reasons I can think of...

 noooo I made the mistake of saying that on one of the first day of classes and he got sooo mad. He was under the impression that Africans were more technologically advanced except for guns, than the Europeans.

I disagree with him, but I'm not going to say it. I'de like to get an A :D
