Obviously not. I was just stating where the term 'prep' really came from, despite its current use. Yes, its usage now originates in clothing/personality, etc.

Just giving everyone an interesting fact about the original meaning of the word. I think it's fun to know things like that. Maybe I'm just weird.

Also, anyone who still buys Abercrombie is a little behind in my opinion haha...I mean look at their stock, nobody is buying there anymore.
-rttocs7

wow....need I say more.

I can't and never say I hate all preps. A prep is a hard working youth who wears a certain type of clothing and does well in school. Many of them annoy me.
-IQ2

And people who dont bother to do there work and present themselfs as best they can annoy me!

I think i was called 'preppy' about 19 times just today. Alot of people are sterotypical...and baby girl i have jeans like that lol. Sure mabye i am a prep but i have many friends that do not dress the same as me but thats fine with me.

rttocs7 i have never before this in the last 3 years i have been here seen the word 'prep'.....

i'll post a picture tomarow...yall can decide prep or not...because personally i dont care what anyone says about me.

It's not a stereotype... it's a Fad.... just liek Metrosexual.... and boy bands, and pogs. It's a style, a fad....

Prep started with how peple were dressing... tucked in shirts, nice hair, etc etc etc.... Now apparently it's a mental thing or some crap... Whatever it is, it'll be gone in 5 years and you'll be "hating" something else.
I disagree. There have always been a 'well-dressed' and 'well-bred' crowd since highschools were born.

Metrosexual sprung up like a year ago and is already dying out.

But when everyone starts to follow that style trend, it becomes a fad, regardless how long it's been around. You think they JUST invented Pogs back in 96 when it was a fad?... they'd been around a while, but it suddenly became popular, therefor becomign a fad....

I remember POGs. That was a longtime ago; now I feel old. Meh. I don't think the meaning behind 'prep' is a trend, for those fade, not linger like the smell of dead things that the cafeteria served up. In school, we're reading a book from the 50's, called "The Catcher in the Rye", in there there are several people who fit the qualifications for today's meaning of the word 'prep' who were to be despised... you know, the shallow type and all. (yes, I know the narrator was depressed, and that had an effect on what he said.) My point is, I don't think that the way preppies act is a trend. It seems that until something changes there will always be people who believe that high school is such a big deal social wise, and that they have to be on top of said social ladder or the world's going to come crashing down on them. Or something like that. I for one know come from a school that's pretty small; we don't have enough people to form all the cliques that you hear about. For example, I know people who fit into the jock and smart kid category, or the skater and popular kid category.. and the prep / geek... we do double duty, lol. I for one have no idea where I fit on this social ladder myself, and I frankly don't care. It would be nice if everybodu didn't care.

There have always been clothing trends. If that's what you are going by, trends, then there have always been 'preps.'

And? I don't understand what you mean. What does that have to do with being a fad? Liek I said, there's always been alot of things, but when they become super popular they become fads, whether or not how long they've been around. Trends that are really popular are fads, because trends tend to die out, just like fads.

Bellbottoms was a trend back in the 70s.... they were also a fad because it was so popular.... Gothic style clothing is a trend, but it's not popular enough to be a fad. When or if it becomes really popular, it will then become a fad. And gothic style clothing has been around forever, but that doesn't mean it can't become a fad.

I've still got Pogs, bet I could sell them for loads of money on E-Bay.
I don't call people preps. I call them Pops because that's what they are. Most kids like and hang out with them (fawn on them, lick their shoes) to get attention from non-pops. *shrugs* Who cares one way or the other? They don't rule the world.
Okay, I lie, they do. So sue me.

Your argument makes no sense at all. Prep, is not a trend. People have thrown that word around for awhile. You ALSO explained 'prep' as a fad and fads only last a short while.

That whole thing is also way off topic. I was ORIGINALLY asking what people had against 'them,' I could care less about what you think are the formalities of it.

Actually, TN is kind of right. If you'll pay attention and look to see what he's talking about.

He's talking about the 'preppy' style. The shags, the A&F, the vintage clothes--it's a fad. Five years ago, they were still called 'preps,' but the clothing was different, the hair-styles were different, the music was different. So, while the descriptive term used remains the same, it is broadened to define something a little different...at least as far as looks go.

As for what people have against them...I say they're jealous, most of them.

So, then I am right in saying that people you 'consider' 'preps' are people who follow trends? WHICH IS exactly what I said before.

Moving on, what is it that a lot of you have against them?

I think it stems from jealousy.

Well not exactly, I'd consider the current prep style a trend in itself... or a fad... (fad to me is a trend that become insanely popular... like what Jncos were back 6 years ago lol)

Anyway, I don't have anything against them... I mean if you want to follow a fad, then do it... everyone else is lol... I had alot of "prep" freinds in High School... and alot of prep people I didn't like, but that was because they were dumba nd stupid and I wouldn't have liked them regardless what trend or fad they followed.

I don't dislike them, they just annoy me. I can actually get along with a few of them for short periods of time.
They annoy me because they have no concept of time. They don't realize that school (jr, high, collage) is not life; that their stunning good looks (sarcasm) are not going to help them survive. Most of them don't even prepare for school itself; If it weren't for the social skills they learned, they would quickly die out.
The females don't do anything except groom themselves (hair, make-up, clothing) in order to get knocked up by the QB. While the males make themselves look and act (and smell) like apes to attract the shallow females. Bragging rights, don'ca know.
Okay, maybe I over simplified this a bit, but that is mainly why I avoid the company of the Pop's.

Even though prep stereo-types are the basis of some of the humour I use at school, I see nothing wrong with them. One of my friends would be categorized as a 'prep' if we really had to cut to the bone. Do the people who say 'I Hate Preps!' really know them? At all?

From my knowledge, many people just think of them was snotty people who wear Abercrombie and Fitch and are obsessed with clothing and looking good, etc. [OK, the A & F thing is just something at my school.] What's wrong with certain brand names and looking good? It's perfectly fine. When I listen in on 'preps' conversations, I hear no arrogance or insulting. I hear more insulting in my conversations than conversations with popular people. People will take one person's personality and with it judge an entire group of people...which is stupid.

Hm...I'll tell a story from my school. The 'punk/rock' group at my school criticize people who wear Abercrombie and Fitch to 'wasting money on crappy t-shirts that are priced $50 just because the label is one them.' while they're walking around with extremely-crapppy-quality Hot Topic shirts that are $18 each. Yeah, A & B might me pricey at times, but the quality of the clothing is excellent.

The whole argument is a load of crap, really.

A prep in my book is..a sobby rich kid, who wears that plaid shirt/vest combo *sivvers*; listen to..like..no music..;watches no tv, as it is 'vile'; have a schedual with no space for fun in it; never talks in class; always the teacher's pet; go figure.

But that's me. Yes, i was, a long...long..time ago...a prep. But i got over it and i am the opposite. Cool. heh..go figure again.

These people are banalties which are self-serving anals. They simply fluctuate with whatever seems right, conformists to labels which have no reason to be stapled and given.

They are usually ignorant, and have an obssession with the anus. They like its beauty. They look at it, not knowing that it is actually putrid and ugly.

....HAH! That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.

All I have to say is that to you, they are what you call them. No matter what anyone else says. Enjoy yourself. Label others. Point and laugh. If it helps raise your self esteem, go for it.

The whole thing with preps and punks started back in the 80's
Preps were the ones who didnt want to be anything like the punks and wore the polo shirts with the aligator on them, and members only jackets... and crap like that , to basically look like that have a stick up thier arse.
It kind of lost its meaning over the years. now I dont even know what a prep is... Everyone is going for the same "punk/goth/trendy" style... you dont know whos who anymore...

All preppy really meant was someone who attended college prepatory school. Then it changed a bit and became something to describe anyone that came off (or dressed) as someone who attended prepatory school.

So I guess when this started people thought of preppy kids as people who play sports constantly, dress in labels and make fun of the other groups. I think people have gotten a bit extreme with the meaning though. It's used for so much now.

The only reason any "preppy" person would go for a dark/gothic style or a punk style, by it's basic definition, is simply because these things are trends. Goth has been around for who knows how long as a style, but thanks to a few break out bands it hit new levels. Now poppy punk stuff is trendy, so that's the reasoning for that... although it seems to have been dying down.

So who knows. I don't really think of anyone I know as preppy in that sense, personally.

Are we talking about, uh Lemurs here? Gorillas? I think it'd be, uh, more ,uh, flowing if you said somehting like "the girls are obsessed with their looks" than "The females don't do anything except groom themselves".... Just a suggestion, it's not sarcastic, it just sota disoriented me... o_0

Preps is an overused phrase. Many peple I know who use it use it as a derogatory(sp?) way to say "people who aren't my friends" or "people who aren't me".. these are always people who think of themseves as "misfits", "rejects", or "goths".... It's a phase most people go through, using the word "prep", that is. Prep ius short for Preperatory School Attenders or something.. People who, uh, go to Prep School. I think it's in reference to the uniforms..o_0

I happily stereotype
Because its fun and
gives me and my
friends something to
joke about.

My defenition of
prep is probably
different than yours
at our school we have
the wanna be skateboarder
kind of prep, you know
The ones that wear DC
crap and dont even
know what the brand
means..
Their also a bunch
of pot heads
Wear clothes way
too tight so their
flab hangs out.
Its kinda gross and
their just oozing with self confidence
because they think
That their jelly bellys
are attractive
Who the hell could
be jelouse of a prep?
They have one mind
follow the same thing.

Just my opinion.
