Thanksgiving

is it when you travel to (or away from) family get togethers?
is it a day when you are thankful for what you have (or dont have) ?
or are you in it only for the turkey?


as for me.......thanksgiving means nothing.

I feel exacly the same way. I don't know why is it that we in general just use one day to give thanks for everything that has been given to us by God, or whatever deity the religion your in is based.

I tend to give thanks everyday I can, and remember. We should be just thankful for being here, at this moment, with family, friends, pets, everything. To me, just to be alive is good enough to be thankful of.

But that's me.

My family doesn't normally travel for Thanksgiving, but this year we'll be heading to another state in order to meet up with some distant relatives. Although large-scale reunions aren't exactly my favorite social activity, the food more than makes up for it.

As holidays go, Thanksgiving is definitely among the more ironic. The European settlers had been starving to death, and were saved only by the Native Americans' generosity. They later chose to reward their benefactors by massacring them and seizing their land. Yes, those pilgrims were shining examples of humanity, neh?

I don't usually eat Turkey for Thanksgiving.... my mother prefers to roast a nice brace of ducks. Very delicious.

[color=hotpink][size=1]I don't think I've ever really given "thanks" on Thanksgiving. I am thankful for everything I have and I make it clear everyday. I always think about my family and loved ones before I go to sleep everynight. So Thanksgiving is really no different.

To me, Thanksgiving means "family." I love going to my nanna's, having a HUGE and absolute WONDERFUL dinner (gotta love that Southern style cooking-despite the fact that my nanna is Scottish, heh) and I enjoy my entire family being there. I have a huge thing for dressing, so I am really looking forward to that.

I wont be going home to my parent's house again until then. So I guess this is my first Thanksgiving where I actually travel to see the family. ^_^ So fun being away at college.[/color][/size]

I hate Thanksgiving. The idea behind it is fine enough, but at this point all it is is an excuse for my family to make tons of food I have no interest in eating whatsoever.

Christmas? It is about something I never have believed in.

Easter? Same as above.

Halloween? It is the only holiday I actually think I look forward to at all. And that is only because I love fall and I love feeling creepy.

Thanksgiving? Who cares that back in the day indians and white men sat down together and gave thanks? I don't. I am thankful for things at least every day...it is kind of pointless to have a holiday around it.

Valentine's Day? A reason to have sex...lol. Perhaps not, but anyways, this holiday's premise is pretty pointless to me. If you are romantic with someone, or in love, I'm sure you already express that enough.

What else is there left?

The 4th of July? It is about America's freedom from Britain. I guess it matters to me [i]to an extent[/i], but it's not like I love my country so much that I want to light off fireworks for it. I light them off because fire is cool...lol.

And what is left? Not much. Most holidays have some religous connotation...and that makes them even more pointless to me. Holidays in general really mean nothing more than another reason to be selfish to me.[/size]

Good ole thanksgiving is the time of which I endulge in eggnog, stuff my face with chicken, stuffing, potatoes, ham, pretty much everything put infront of me.

I mean, that's what the holiday literally is. We ate with the native americans and stuffed our faces as much as we could. But it wasn't the pilgrims who slaughtered them. It was their ancestors.

Atleast we can try to not be so pessimistic on holidays.

Basically Thanksgiving in my family means that my dad and my papa come back up from their hunting camp(deer season) by the PA boarder to sit in the familyroom and watch football only taking a break to pee or eat and if it's at my Aunt Marty or Aunt Kathy's house they don't even have to take a break to eat.
It also means that us girls will spend our time going from the kitchen to the TV (well, atleast Football loving me) and afterwards doing dishes then playing boardgames)
My cousin will play video games and my brother will sulk his stupid head off.
Of course it also means that the next day is the rushing Christmas shopping day.
Who knows, by next year it could also involve me paying my brother to change my kid's diapers while I wait for my husband to call from IRaq.
Oh yeah, and it also means that we get around a table, hope my cousin doesn't say an obnoxious prayer and eat stuff.
However, last year was my first Thanks Giving married and away from home. That one involved pot roast, pumpkin pie and porn.:laugh:

[color=green]On Thanksgiving my family goes to visit my grandparents on my mom's side. This just means a whole lot of grief for me, as I don't get a long with them. My grandmother makes rude comments to me all day about my hair color or my eyebrow peircing... No one there talks to me like a person, let a lone an adult, and I am almost 23.

This year, in a break from tradition, I'm spending Thanksgiving in Vegas. It will be just my parents and I, and I think it's a way for my parents to lessen the hurt of not having Eric around for this holiday. It should be an adventure, Thanksgiving in Sin City...[/color]

Thanks giving is great if you are actually giving thanks. My family hardly ever prays or even talks about giving thanksgiving, and I admit that I don't pray every thanksgiving, but I do evey once in a while and I don't just do it on Thanksgiving either. I thank God for at least one thing pretty much every time I pray.

The only thing that goes on at my house on thanksgiving is stress, stress, stress. My mom cooks this HUGE dinner every year that is supposed to last us the rest of the year so she doesn't have to cook and no one is allowed in the kitchen or they will be brutally slaughtered. And there are a bunch of people that come around from different sides of my family that should never be in a room together. And I can't hang out with my friends either because I have to stay home and keep the relatives occupied.

This year my sister is coming up from CA though and she is going to help my mom cook, so hopefully it won't be so nerveracking.

The reason we started celebrating thanksgiving in our house was because my dad would get a gift certificate for a free turkey at his job, so in my case it really is all about the turkey...and the four days of no school.

A friend of mine once said that Thanks Giving is just a prelude to the Christmas Shopping rush because the Malls are all closed for the first time that year and everyone is just getting eager to go shop. This year we plan to get up at 7:00AM and push thru the other 20 somethings and the middle-aged women to get stuff. Either that or we'll sleep in and drive 45 minutes to East Rochester after 10:30 because the rush will finally settle down. Either way, we fulfill our mission to increase the Economy of Western New York. The week after that we focus on Syracuse.

Plus, it is one of the few times my family gets along for a night even if we are mad at each other. The real reason I actually enjoy Thanksgiving is because I get to see a lot of my relatives. I don't get to see many of them too often during the course of the year and it's nice to catch up with them.

I don't celebrate Thanksgivings' past-- only my present and future... did that sound corny to anyone else? Anyway, my point is that I use it as a time to thank my religion of choice for what I have, and to eat much much more than usual, without feeling as guilty.
