go to an anime convention.
there are a lot of adults there.

Adults make up a lot of the Anime community. To say that "adults criticize anime" is a generalization that basically disenfranchises all the adults that do like Anime.

Well, Really, my opinion on the whole matter is that, Adults wouldn't like to critisize anime if they give it to you right? Cartoon Network people give it to you right? But then again, We have people who are paid to critisize movies, why not Anime too?
My parents hate anime because they thinks it's childish, my mum can't understand why I like or how it's different. My theory is, adults are just hopeless.
I think that that is absolutely true...my dad does the same friggin thing. I mean, if me like, why the hell do they critisize it! It makes me so mad! :animeangr

I don't watch anime around my parents.

If they walk in the room and I'm watching it, they're like, "uhhh---huh." Especially my Dad. My Mom was around more when we (siblings and I) first started watching it. I'll never forget when my sister made my Mom sit down and watch an episode of Hamtaro with her :animesmil . So, my Mom's a little blaise about it, but they still both just kinda look at it when I'm watching. Especially, well, you know how anime can get a little risky with the girls and too much nudity, etc etc. Well, I'm so used to that, unless it's extreme I don't even notice it, but if my parents see someone flopping around they'd think I was watching porn or something >_>.

Even when I'm watching a perfectly harmless anime they make me feel uncomfortable about it :animeblus . Luckily I've got Anime Network, Adult Swim, and Anime Selects On Demand in my basement!

I don't feel comfortable watching anime with my parents :animeswea . The only episodes I watch around them are the ones I've already seen and know for a fact there's nothing questionable.

Well, I like the more appropriate anime, but if my parents knew the whole truth and every single fact of what the anime I watch is about, they probably wouldn't approve :animeswea . They're ok with it though because I tell them what they wanna hear :p . I don't lie, I just don't go into detail. The only thing my dad knows about anime is that Speed Racer is one (his favorite show as a kid), So he's cool with my obsession. My mom thinks some anime's cute :animesmil . She's also aware that's there' bad anime, but she's knows I don't watch the gross stuff.

Anyway, I think parents pick on anime more because it's more detailed or something. And/or they're just ignorant, I dunno. One time when I was at the mall at the anime store I heard a lady say, "Well, it's not the worst thing on TV, but it's definitly not for children". Kinda true right? A parent can't get mad at Adult Swim for showing anything. What are they doing letting they're little kid watch Adult Swim anyway?

Anime'a hard to explain to parents. I don't like doing it x_x...

With my father, he's cool with anime. When he comes over we watch some anime shows together. With my mother its a different story. Her and I were watching Inuyasha and she says,"How can someone like Kikyo be alive? She's not a real perist. She's trying to brang someone to Hell with her." Then she'll start making fun of Inuyasha's attacks. Like with his Wind scar, she says that he keeps hitting the ground and not the enamy. It's hard to explain it to her. She doesn't really like me watching some of these [AS] shows. :animedepr

lol! Your not alone! My mom pokes fun at my anime too. She calls them my "grenudos", spanish for something like "messy-haired" :animesigh .

She thought Inuyasha was a girl just cause he has long hair. I don't think she pays attention when I watch the show 'cause he clearly has a mans voice x_x! My mother is crazy XP.

I really don't know how to respond to this... I'm an adult (although I don't act like it :animeswea ) I agree with all the other people who are saying that the parents who don't agree with it probably haven't watched much (if any)! I don't see anything wrong with letting kids watch, I mean I let my 6 year old newph watch Escaflowne! I know for a fact that he's seen worse on tv! My 4 year old neice loves Pretear, and Magic Knight Rayearth.(really makes you want to leave your kids with me huh?)
So for all of you whose parents don't agree with it, simply ask them... " Have you ever seen an ep?" If they haven't sit them down with one and watch it with them, then they can tell you first hand what is SO wrong with it.

I agree but the only reason anime stick out like a soar thumb unlike the other cartoon is because the drawing technique is way beyond the likes of any cartoon and the story as well, if i compare marvel against anime. anime would wins hands down. and so in anime style, to them it's tens times worser (we have to admit anime IS really getting realistic these days and so the plot and everything else)

and if you think about it the plot goes even deeper than other cartoons. like beyblade, is not about tornament and to become number one. they started to go on about how a champion would feel like in under stress of judged as number one. and the battle is getting much more serious than ever.

And also lets look at the history of anime OR MANGA!
you guys do notice that most series sometimes are rated 15. and i just find it so stupid that anime is always connected to porn!
seriously, and that maybe why some over protective parents may think anime is getting too much. (overprotective parent thoughts "if anime is makin porn, imagine what other stuff they might put on)

MOST IMPORTANTLY, since ANIME is CARTOON, many would think it is aim at kids.
( they just forgot the part that it is mainly older kids, you know we do watch television ^-^') :animeangr

That's just the thing, I don't WANT my parents to see it. Unless it's one of my select episodes I know doesn't have anything too much objectionable.

I have both a set of step-parents and a set of real parents. My real dad watches DBZ, and has the complete japanese uncut version as well. My step mom is really kind of indifferent. My step dad despices it, denouncing it as childish cartoons though he refuses to watch them with me( I know one episode of Evangelian, Harlock saga, or Soultaker would change his mind on how childish they are). My real mom poses more of a quiet protest, though she understands they are anything but just another normal cartoon so I over look it. I don't understand the objections against anime, though I respect anyone who genuine dosen't like it. What upsets me are people criticizing who have never even seen one, and yet they know enough to say "it's bad for our children" and " it's promoting violence against others". The biggest group involved are our government who believe violence on T.V. is the problem with America, not the declining economy or the decay of the public schooling system but violence in anime and video games is this countries problems. These people need a new topic and parents " LEAVE YOUR KIDS ALONE AND LET THEM ENJOY ANIME" instead of giving them a hard time for it.

adults in general? most of who ive met do. my high school art teacher, No. a few of my friends mothers, no. the greatest majority of my friends, no. my parents, yes. a few of my other friends parents and sibblings, yes.

i got my parents to sit down and watch the first episode of Fruits Basket, and they told me that if i critized anime like i do some movies, i would hate it (ex. bad special effects, poor quality) what they dont gather though, is that sometimes poor quality/bad special effects is exactly what the animatior wanted in specific parts to emphasize certain things. (say, when Haru drops the bomb to Tohru and Momiji as to what kind of shop Aya runs). and in comparison to live action, some of the FX in actual anime movies put to shame the FX to live action (GITS2:I)

the thing that attracts me the most, i guess, would be the origionality of some of the shows. Haibane Renmei, Fruits basket, DNAngel, MADLAX, FLCL, and so on....

It seems like most parents and anime never mix, but there are some parents that are just fine with it. Alot of the problem might be with the content, even thought it is reasonable. Most parents have a broad misconception of anime. The believe all anime is too violent or too sexual . Like many people have said before, some parents just find it to be childish (which I don't agree with)

You must have had a cool Art teacher. Not me though! As our last project in my drawing and painting class we could baisically do anything we wanted- watercolor, printing, pastels, or a comic. Me and a couple other kids liked anime, so we got all excited. Then the teacher announced that there would be no anime drawing of any kind. I wanted to strangle her.

Her argument was that all anime looked the same and she wanted us to draw our own characters if we were doing a comic. I think it's far easier to tell Fruits Basket apart from Inuyasha than it is to tell Renoir from Degas. She really pissed people off, saying stuff like that.

But that teacher has moved on to teach COLLEGE art (someone help us) and a less opinionated one teaches drawing and painting now. My little sister took the class and got to draw a surrealism sketch with CLAMP's Tokyo Babylon as part of the theme. It's real cool but she wouldn't have been able to do it if she had had my teacher. Art is freedom.
