Censorship

My school just blocked the words Anime and Otaku so I cant get on any site that has ether word in its address from the school computers...
How could they do this? Now I can understand them blocking a word like Henti, but what the Hell do they think their doing. I talked to the guy who made the disicion to block them and all I got back for my efferts was a speach about how I should find something better to do with my time. the basterd! he dident just block my site he insulted me. if only I could crack the school computers. But no... I will not let my hacking skills drift to the dark site. I hate crackers, not to be construde with hackers."hackers write code, crackers brake it"
I digres... back to the point. Do you think the schools right for blocking the words anime and otaku? you don't! well please send in some advice on how I might fix this. I never had to fight the school board before. I dont even now were to start.

I can understand why your school would do this. Even without criteria like "hentai", there are many sites which are just not suitable for a school environment.

For example a friend of mine was using the school's computers to look up manga (although he didn't know it was called that). He typed into google something like "Japanese Comic Book" and almost all of his search results were porn related.

I've had personal problems with this censorship when I was at school as well. My friends would type my name into a search engine. The first result was a geniune site about me and whenever they clicked the link the found themselves confronted by a message stating that this site contained pornography. I definitely know that my page had no such thing on it. This caused some teasing, but that's what it's like in my friend group - nothing's taken too seriously.

I'd recommend you consult your school's acceptable internet use policy. You could possibly find that such censorship goes against the conditions you agreed to in the policy. This way you actually can "fight back".

I agree that a school is a place of learning, but many schools also allow students the use of the internet for recreational purposes e.g. during breaks between classes.

As transtic said schools have the right to do what ever they want, if they believe it will increase the "educational level."

If its true that there are a bunch of kids getting on anime sites instead of writing up their mid-term papers or something to that affect then I think the words should be banned. I really don't see why they wouldn't be allowed to.

Thats like saying the army has control of guns, but can't outlaw certain ones and such. Its pretty much un-reasonable. We'd have some medical man running around with a bazooka while the true bazooka carrier would be stuck with a surgical knife.

Its a drastic example but it proves a point. If its stopping you from learning which is what school is for then i think they should ban it.

Besides you can get on it at home, jobs arn't going to be so happy just to let you plop on the computer in the middle of the day to check out otakuboards.com because you want to.

Its the real world, welcome to it!! :D

Well, as long as you contribute to the demise of this kid's mind, I guess that's okay. Please spend more time going on lame anime sites during class time.

As the guy who actually runs the site...even I would urge you not to visit while you're at school. School is for learning, not OtakuBoards.

By all means, enjoy yourself here after school or on the weekend or whenever your parents give you leisure time. But OB is definitely a place for leisure...homework and schoolwork should be your very first priority.

That really sucks. I kinda know how you feel.

I have this vice-principal at my school, Mrs. Wyland. She's a real weirdo. Ever since we got this new principal she started pushing him around, making him ban everything that she thinks is "gang related." The students at my school can't even wear bandanas to even harmless baby rattles because of it. A couple of girls brought binkies to school one day (yes, I know this is stupid in the first place) but they were banned because Mrs. Wyland says we will put drugs in them. It has gotten to the point where we can't even have smelly erasers because she says there is cocaine on them.

The school can do anything it wants with it's own property, and I believe they made the right choice.

Surfing OB is not a good idea in school time, when I found out the computers at my course I was doing had blocked OB, I was upset, but then I saw my grades improve, :smirk: So now I thank them for blocking it, I still have plenty of free time to use Otakuboards on, and a shiny new certificate too!

Webmarshal - heh, somehow I don't think that name will ever leave my head.

Um..shouldn't you be doing your classwork on the computer, not being on theotaku?
The school can do whatever they like, it's their computers. If I had a job in the school, I would block it out myself if I caught students going on their favorite websites then doing their school work.

But like at my old elementary school, some people would try to find Dragonball GT sites, or some porn. They didn't get real far with blocks on the computer.
And it turns out all of those people have gotten D's on their report card. So you have time to go on OB when you're at home or on the weekend.

Honestly, you're going about this the wrong way. Being angry and "fighting the school board" are not going to get you very far in this matter. If you want to restore your, um, surfing rights, you should talk civilly to someone. Ask why they were blocked, be polite, and try to see things from the other point of view.

Then, without throwing a temper tantrum, withdraw from the situation. If you can think of legit reasons why you should be able to go to those sites, go back to the person later and ask them about it. But be aware that things like "It's not fair!" don't get very far.

In the meantime, why don't you play games on Mavis Beacon?

<_<;

Anyway, my school has blocked a ton of anime sites from the system (OtakuBoards wasn't included, heh). Doesn't bother me too much - I can always wait until I go home to visit wherever I want to go.

The school is just trying to get people to stop going to leisure sites instead of blowing off schoolwork. It's their right to do so - it's not a big issue to complain about, anyway. Really, what do you expect a school to have computers for? Research.

Arent you kinda screwing yourself in
by telling whats its face that your
on otakuboards during school?
Not to be mean or rude or anything
But thats kinda thick.
What grade are you in??
At school, I hate to say this,
Its kinda painfull, but..
Pay attention, do your work. The
only reason computers are at school
is because they provide more
resources for your education...
Not so you can mess around and
drain away your braincells on
their time.
Do that in study Hall.

Here's a hint, get over it.

Schools have the right to block or ban anything that is not educational. Whether or not they choose to exercise this right is up to them. If you're school is one that chooses to go ahead and block anime sites, then that's up to them. Sure, it may not be fun for you, but you can't do much about it.

You're only in school for a few hours a day, and you shouldn't be spending that time on OB. I'm not going to lie, I have come on OB during school, but I wouldn't reccomend it. Learning is vital, anime is not.

You could do what Sara said, but do you honestly feel the need to research and brainstorm and spend your time finding loop holes so that you can come onto OB for 3o minutes a day at school?

Just let it go and spend less time worrying about what you can't do, it's Thanksgiving, be thankful for what you can.

I want to emphasise that this person never said they were accessing OtakubBoards or TheOtaku, just general anime sites. In many cases as well, these kinds of sites can be relevant to school.

In my english class I studied "Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040" in reference to the topic "Powerplay". In visual arts I also researched the differing styles that anime encompassed, to assist me with my body of work. Without access to the internet, I surely wouldn't have been able to successfully complete my research.

I also want to re-emphasise that many schools allow students recreational use of the internet, which the person here may well have used it for.

I totally agree that school work should come before internet hobbies, but I think many of you are assuming too much about what this person does.

Yeah, anime can be school related. As for not doing your homework because you're looking at anime, in creative writing I'm doing a children's book on "The ABC's of Anime" and while trying to research some names that start with Q and N that are child appropriate, I found many sites blocked. And my friend Zach did one of his speeches on anime. But schools will be schools.

*cough*

As a person who works for the guy that actually runs this site, I have to agree.

True enough, schoolwork can be a bore or stressful, but that's no excuse to shirk off to get on anime website or whatever.

I've seen that a few people get on to research things for school projects, but that's really the only reason you should get on them. Otherwise, you're taking time away from getting what's important; an education. I doubt a few Kenshin pics or some Blood: The Last Vampire character profiles will get you as far in life as a degree.

If you are screwing around at school instead of doing your project or whatever, then you shoundn't get to go on the websites you want to go to. But like a few people just said, anime can be school related. In fact, that's one way I try to make my projects fun by choosing a topic that interests me like anime or manga, or video games or something. Then I can go on cool websites and stuff and they won't get on my back about it. So if they did that at my school what they did at yours I would get really pissed off too.

To answer ARTommy's question, I live in Idaho where nothing ever happens.
