I just got a new bmx today, and took up the art of trick biking.

But that's not the point fo this thread. These two questions are:

Who here participates or has participated in an extreme sport?

Is yes to nunber 1,..which sport was it?

And...why do parents get freaked with little Johny says 'mom, can i buy element spakebaord..oh and can you take me to this skatepark', but not when little johny says 'hey mom i've decided to take up the art fo collecting sharp and dangerous knives and guns'??? Can somone please explain that???
my answers:
1: Yes, i do, and have been for several years...
2: I bmx (just started), skateboard, extreme inline..and extreme scooter.
3: I have..no idea.

Well, if you can answer any of the three, please post here.

PS: The example from number 3 is exagerated, but it fits..

1) The answer to this one is a definate yes. I also BMX bike, but I do more of an offroad thing.

2) I bike through all the offroad paths near my house and eventually come to a gaggle of dirt jumps. Nothing really major, and I've hurt myself more times than I've made any good jumps, but ncie jumps none the less. PS, I always wear a helmet.

3) Even though wonderful hobbies like knife collecting are dangerous, most parents now a days have the sence to keep track of stuff like this. When kids go out and skateboard/BMX/snowboard/rollerblade/etc the parents really can't keep tabs on them at all.

That's my three cents.

1. let's see, I do cross country jumping. I know what you're thinking, yeah sure, horseback riding-how extreme. But look where cross country jumping go Christofer Reeves. But since it's never been classified as an extreme sport, i have to say no. Even if I do clear 4ft fences at a canter.
2. see number one.
3. I think I'd be happy that my kid is getting excersize. Even if it is dangerous. But hey, that's why companies invented saftey equipment! My cousin does hockey and skateboarding and my aunt is just happy that he's being active.

1: this really has to get to extreme sports, when i went skiing with my school, at night and evening when the lift stops, we where to go sliding down the lift passage with 90kmp/h.
also i by mistake landed on the black piste, and i did the same as with the lift passage, only this was much steeper and so i went with a 110 kmp/h off the piste.
then i came across some trees and then looked down and realized i grabbed the tree and was hanging at the edge of a 2 km deep ravine(is that spelled right?)
it couldn`t get any more extreme.

2: i allready told EXTREME hahaha

3: at your age i as your parent i would freak out over the knives stuff, about the skating i would say "break a leg" as a joke and warn you so you`ll try to limit your titanium parts later.
but not all parents are like that.(SHAME on them)

I don't do any extreme sports because I love my body too much, but they're fun to watch. For awhile my brother couldn't be found without his skateboard, and now he's got a trick bike that he rides everywhere. He's also had stitches everywhere, and he's done a lot of stupid stuff that makes me want to smack him. And that, my friends, is why parents freak out - it's the safety issue. The last thing they want you to do is ride your bike into a lake and or into a parked car (yeah, my brother did that) because you were "goofing off," pulling stunts, and not paying attention.

Granted, not everyone does that - my brother is just an idiot. But give your parents a break. They're just worried.

Ah, you never see a sk8boarder jump over a cliff. clear a 70 foot gap going 70 miles an hour (danny way), sure, but no cliffs

Oh, Danny way used a 50 foot drop in to gap like 80 feet, then hit a mega ramp still going 50 miles per hour, gonig 26 feet up, bustin 540 back romeos, it was awesome. Watch 'the dc video' if you want to see. He rocks.

Yes
I inline skate, skateboard, and snowboard.
I have no clue...my mom was freaked when I first started skateboarding. I guess she was scared that I might brake my neck or something like that. Weird, she will let me skateboard, but she won't let me buy a katana. Anyways, I enjoy the sports I am in very much....though I am not very good at skateboarding yet. heh

Well, I used to skateboard but I kinda gave it up since I wanted to concentrate on my bass more. I'd really like to get into aggressive inline skating but I dont know if I can be bothered buying some to be perfectly honest.

And parents freak because extreme sports are dangerous, duh, the whole idea of extreme is that theres a certain element of danger involved. People just tend to see the bails and injuries involved with extreme sports and over look the technical side to landing and exacuting tricks.

I feel the same way Arcadia. That and I have a strong averson to broken bones.
My cousin does ice hockey, roller hockey and BMX biking and he's broken his left arm twice, and had stitches all over the place. He looks like that doll girl in Nightmare before Christmas in a family photo. It's down right disturbing to look at him. And he doesn't stop. He has a little ramp area set up in his driveway during the summer.
But still my aunt doesn't mind when he does it. I guess she's just glad that he's active especially since so many kids are over weight these days.

True. BUT THERE'S MORE PEOPLE HURT IN GOLF THEN SKATEBOARDING.

Ie: an actual skatboard/parts(no Wal-mart brands or anything like that) Good shoes, that have a FLAT sole, and usualy with a cushion in the heel and ball. (skateboard shoe)

Ugh, i skateboard but when the board leaves the ground I, in turn usually come closer to it. I'm really tired of extreme sports though, they're great if you are actually doing them but I'm really sick of seeing it all over TV. Contests are cool every once in a while, but its too saturated.

And Extreme scooter? Isn't that an oxymoron? It was funny on jackass but thats where I'd leave it.

No, there is a sport called extreme scooter. They're thinking of putting it in the x games.

And, they only talk about skateboarding 2 times a year, the x games and the gravity games. They don't want to talk about it. The government hates skateboarding, don't you remember???
Well, unless your talking about a sk84lyf channel(skate for life spelled the way i spell it), that i don't have. If so, tell me how i can get that channel..heh.

I participate in the wonderfully extreme sport called rockclimbing. The Australian scene is less controversial but some property owners don't particuarly like you tramping through their yards to get to the cliffs.

In answer to the third question I think mothers think they have to protect you from all hidden dangers but they cannot. My mum dosen't particuarly want me dangling from the side of a cliff with only bits of metal and a piece of rope to stop you hitting the ground but is less protective of me as she is with my little brother.

I BMX nearly every day, it's part of my everyday life. I couldn't live without my bike. I couldn't go for a day without going for a cruise around town.

I'm not into the real "extreme" stuff, though I've got a few tricks up my sleeve, some of which I went through hell to master.

I used to skateboard quite a bit, though I liked BMXing too much... skateboarding just grew away from me. I still have my skateboard up on the wall... heh, hasn't been used for atleast half a year.
