Inuyashafan418
Hello! This is just a thread in hopes someone feels the same way. I'm from a scandinavian country (pm me and I'll tell you) and I speak the language fluently. I speak it at home, so whenever I'm on my phone people think it's awesome that i'm bilingual. THEN people say, "Say something in (my language)." That annoys me. In short, are there any other people that are bilingual and sick of people asking them to "Say this" or "Say that"? If you'd like to share a funny occasion that has happened, go right ahead! :D
Lady Asphyxia
I'm not bilingual. At home my family speaks English, although my mother is fluent in German and adept in French and I'm learning German and my brother French. My mother herself is learning Indonesian. But when I'm learning, the same thing will happen to me, although not as often -- so it probably isn't as annoying. My suggestion is, next time, just come up with a stupid phrase. Like, "My book fancies your squirrel", or something as ridiculous. It might amuse them enough not to ask again, or even freak them out a little bit. At least, that's my suggestion, heh.
future girl
I speak Spanish, but in Miami that's really no big deal. I have been in situations where I'm asked to say stuff, though. I don't mind at all, I've actually always volunteered to be the translator in situations with non-english speaking parents and non-spanish speaking teachers. It's annoying when half the class is asking me how to say F**k though, and contrary to popular belief, yes there is a word for it.
Artemis
Actually, what annoys me is when the bilingual people use their command of another language to talk about you behind your back. I spent 6th and 7th grade in a vertible hell (clique problems) and much of it was because the Hispanic girls in my class had something against me (my brains). They would frequently speak Spanish in front of people who couldn't (even though their English was just fine.) I think that may be why I'm taking Spanish now. I hated the feeling of being the little white nerd-girl in the dark. What's fun is knowing a bit in a language that almost no one our age knows: Latin. I took it in 8th grade. I'd still be taking it now, but it isn't offered at my Catholic school. What's up w/ that? (I've been told that parents fear we'll go back to all Latin if it's offered at the high school level...yeah...it's stupid.)
SasukeUchiha
You should be happy people are interested in your culture. Many people in my experience look down on you for having an accent or speaking more than one language and basically show signs of your individual culture. I say if it interests them and if they are not insulting about it just go along with it. Personally I am one of those people because I enjoy learning about different cultures and hearing how different things are said.

I've actually done this, not to speak ill of someone, but sometimes there are things you want to say to your close friend that you don't want anyone else to know about. It's horribly rude, but a lot of times you can't help it. And with some ppl it's just natural to speak only Spanish with them despite the fact that our English is perfect. A lot of times you'd be surprised by this supposed Spanish-speaking kids. They're grammar is horrible, it's spanglish, there's nothing more horrible on this earth than spanglish. *shudders*

If it bugs you, I shall make valiant attempt to resist asking about...um...the language of the country people are supposed to PM you to know. (A couple weeks ago, Dad apologized for the fact that he and my mom were native English-speakers. *rolls eyes* He doesn't tease me often, but yeah.) He asks me crap and sometimes I'm right. My friends and I do that all the time, but then again, I'm not expected to know spanish perfectly I guess. Sometimes we do it just to joke, too! Sephiroth
It happens to me quite often since I am also fluent in Arabic, it doesn't happen quite so much as it used to since I have moved home, the place I was living in before in Birmingham had a lot of Pakistani's who were interested in the language, so I am pretty thankful the area I am living in now doesn't care for Arabic much, heh ^_^
naomisan24
I speak English fluently, along with Arabic, Japanese, and Hebrew not-so-fluently. Over the years, I have increased my articulacy in Spanish, French(temporarily), and Russian, with our root languages German, Greek, and Latin on the side. I know exactly what you mean! Linguistics is deplorable as a talent!
eleanor
I'm bilingual in English and Korean, and yes, a lot of people think that's cool. Why shouldn't it be? Being bilingual gives you a lot of advantages. Anyways...it doesn't bother me when people ask me to say something in Korean. They're not purposely trying to annoy you, they're just curious.

G/S/B Master
The only words people around me are intrested about my language is cursing and food names (lmao, i'm serious about this). I speak Vietnamese by the way, I only speak Viet when it's with my friends or if I hate someone so much, make fun of them when they're not in the area XD. It doesn't really annoy me if someone ask to say something in another language.

I don't know how many people here appreciate the level of logic you always seem to add to these threads, but I sure as hell do. I am glad it doesn't bother anatema. I think she'd hurt me otherwise heh. I took Latin for three years, I sure as hell cannot speak it... so I don't have another usable language I can play around with. Thus I just find it cool that others can. That's about all there is to it.
Guest Heezay
I speak both English and Arabic, though Arabic not as fluently. And the sorry thing is...that I'm an Arab. (shakes his head). Oh well I'm picking up on the hard stuff pretty fast.
Sandy
I've heard from several of my friends who were exchange students that they used to amuse themselves by teaching their native classmates some dirty Finnish sentences, so when the classmates would meet a person who talks Finnish, the first thing (after introduction) would be "Haista vittu" (I'll leave it up to your imagination to figure out what it means, though Laura, my-sister-in-language probably knows). Go ahead and try it if you have a chance! :toothy: Te he hee, nasty me... :naughty:
Sweet Pie
I talk in my own language at home which is the Malay language. Some Chinese people would want to learn them so, I teach them the basic ones... IN school or other places, I speak in English. I'm learning Japanese..when people ask me to give a sentence, I'll turn them down...because I'm a little slow *I'm not used to it yet* I learn Arabic too, but it's a little difficult.....to learn... Over here, Chinese people everywhere...so when they talk, I kind of understand what they're talking because I grow up here...
