Mimmsicle
Last week I was fortunate enough to see two Marx Brothers movies: "A Day at the Races" and "A Night at the Opera". It has been many years since I saw any of the many movies they did, but I remember "The big store" being my favourite (if ever I saw them all) Back when I was young, I think I enjoyed the movie[s] simply because of the sheer volume of craziness. Now when I look at them, I am mostly floored with Groucho's innuendos. Harpo appears to be ahead of his time, with those psychedelic ventures on a harp - or any other instrument/object that came his way, for that matter. How he managed to communicate without words is also something that never struck me as a child. To me, he was talking..... I still hold to that. Chico's virtuosos on the piano has always brought a smile to my face. I just love how he doesn't take his talent seriously, but instead radiates playfulness and joy. The way he seemingly effortless executes a piece of music, with his fingers dancing on the keys, makes me admire his skill all the higher. Now I have a question to those who are more familiar with the Marx Brothers' movies. I'm looking into buying some of their movies, but I am not entirely sure which ones to go for. (Considering that many of them might not be available, this problem may never arise) So any suggestions and comments about this topic, are most welcomed. - Mimmi
Manic Webb
I admire the Marx Brothers from what little I've seen of them. I've downloaded quite a few Groucho sound wavs in my day, and Harpo made a few appearances on some of my favorite classic TV shows (ie. I Love Lucy). I've also gone to a few Marx Brothers websites. I've yet to see a full film, though; just a few clips and snippettes here and there. Now that you've named a few titles, I might actually get around to seeing one of them. OlgaTheDwarf
Communists! Sorry, I really had to, I can never help making bad jokes. Anyways, as far as movies go, I would recommend Duck Soup. I don't really remember anything about it, but I do remember laughing quite a bit. Maybe I'll get it out again and watch it sometime.
Sara
I don't remember any of their movies, although I know I watched a couple with my grade school best friend. She was a fan, I think. Her name was (well, is) Ashley, and she has short blond hair and plays the harp.... Our eighth grade year, she dressed up as Harpo for a halloween party, and didn't talk the entire evening. (At least, not while she was around me...) That's my anecdote for the night.
DeathBug
Groucho Marx is my new god. Seriously, I don't remember any of them except Groucho. I've only been fortunate enough to see two or three of theire works, but I don't remember which ones. I remember thinking Groucho's style was ahead of its time; he'd easily fit in on SNL or the like today. Dang....I'm going to scroung up some of their movies...^__^
Mimmsicle
Thanks for the replies, it's good to see people valuing the comedical legacy left by the Marx Brothers.... Like PT pointed out to me, though, finding Marx Brothers movie will prove quite the challenge. Not many are available. I aquired two DVD's today ("Horse Feathers" and "A Night in Casablanca") and I might put up some sort of review here at a later day.
