I have to do a persuasive speech for my speech class and since anime websites (including otakuboards.com) getting blocked at school has really been pissing me off lately, I decided to do my speech on why they shouldn't be blocked at school. One of the points I will make is that students use anime and manga for schoolwork. Well, I know that I do, and a few of my friends do as well, but I want to know if you do and I want to have proof that anime and manga websites can actually help students.

Please, anyone who comes across this, vote, because I need your input.

I have two stories, one makes sense, the other is just very disturbing.
1. I wrote an English paper on anime and manga influencing people by showing them what people in other countries watch on TV. That was in 12th grade and I got a B.
2.My lab partner and I finished dissecting our grasshopper and earthworm in biology and she had sketched them into her notebook. I finished with the notes and she began sketching the dissection of ChibiUsa. I took pretty good notes on that one too. We got an A in lab for our disections of the earthworm and grasshopper. But we got detention from the chibiusa disection-I guess we shouldn't have turned that one in

I don't honestly remember directly writing a report about anime, but I draw manga all the time in Art Class (And I have an A in the class!).

My art teacher used to be an animator for Disney, so he likes how several students in the class, including myself, are rather gifted with anime-influenced drawings.

He has most of the class doing random assignments, like making landscapes or designing a product box, but our art teacher has two or three of my peers and I designing our own manga: Writing out the script, then creating an outline, followed by a minor storyboard and then the actual comic. He's having us work rather professionally about it, taking all those steps and then actually creating the comic.

For a while Mr. Chisholm (The teacher) had us trying to stay away from the style of anime- He wanted us to have a wide array of styles under our belts, and he wanted us to use them. Then he learned that we're only good at drawing manga, and he gave that ideal up.

I'd like to do a report on anime or manga, but I have never really had an oppurtunity to do such a thing. All of my reports in the past have been very straight-forward and limited, each with a set subject that we couldn't change. That may change, though, now that I have such flexible teachers this year.

You'll only get even better at drawing cartoons if you grasp the idea of drawing realistically.

Anyways, the reason your school blocked anime sites is probably because they're paranoid about hentai or porno, or whatnot. I'm not surprised, either, because the last time I used a school computer, a hentai ad popped up right when I openend up Internet Explorer. School computers aren't for having fun on anime forums while your supposed to be doing work, anyway. Well, some teachers might let you just do anything if there's nothing else to do, but you're going to die.

Yeah, sometimes I do. Like book reports and stuff like that for manga. Which is rather reasonable.
One time I had to do a report on cultures of a certain country, you got to pick what country. So I picked Japan and alot of that report talked about anime, manga, their food, and language. I got an A on that one! Thanks anime for giving me awsome knoledge! ^_~ :D
Another time we had to do a report on our favorite bands, and of course I did The Pillows, thanks to FLCL I had the knoledge of a cool Japanese band. Otherwise I would have no idea what band to do. By the way, that was at the beginning of this year.
And when I was younger, we had to make word finds on the computer, and I used anime shows, some names of the people on the shows, and of coarse I used the very few Japanese words I knew. ^_^
So yes, I've used anime in some school work.

Well, I personally don't see how having access to anime and manga websites at school is really going to help further your education. If you were doing research on something of the sort, I would think that it could be something that could be done at home or at a public library. Like mal said, hentai is a big problem and I'm sure that alot of people have accidently had some problem with it.

At the high school I went to, they had this system that automatically blocked websites that had bad things in them, and even a few that didn't. It was a good system overall, even if we couldn't get to some of the websites on Canterbury Tales, and I could always access the OtakuBoards. So that was fun. ^_^

As for doing anime related projects, I've done quite a few because my teachers actually encouraged it. Art is a class I haven't had since middle school, but all of my drawings were in anime style and my teacher loved it. That was back in the day before anime was mainstream. I miss those days...

My favorite project I ever did that had to do with anime was over the novel The Poisonwood Bible. It was about this group of sisters who had to leave America and move to the Congo where their father, a crazy Reverend, tried to convert the natives. I did a report where I compared each character to their anime counterpart, and I even got videoclips of each one. For the youngest sister, Ruth May, I compared her to Yuiren from Fushigi Yugi and how they bothed experienced a tragic death.
I got the videoclip of where Yurien dies in Tamahome's arms.
My teacher almost cried, lol. It was great. She loved the project so much that I made a perfect grade.

There are many other instances and papers, but that one was my favorite. ^_^

Yeah, I know they're paranoid about hentai and stuff, but I don't think they should block EVERY website about anime. They could be more specific. From what I've heard from a number of different people, there are like three guys whose jobs are to just sit around and block websites containing specific words and they go through the history and block all the sites with the word anime in them. I don't think it's very fair to judge all anime that way just because of a few bad apples.

Also, maladjusted, I don't just go on anime websites at school just to screw around. That's the whole point of this poll and the whole point of my speech.

That's a really good question. I never did nor thought about using anime/manga as my school assignment before.

(This may not count or whatever) In english, my mom helped me with a letter I had to do for homework. The letter talks about a "thank you for the interview thing;" I explain about why I'm interested in being a graphic designer (it involves being a designer of animation). And in my workbook, I answered a question on where would I work for summer. I said in a store called "Anime Pop." It's a shop I go that sells a bunch of anime and manga.

It may not count, but it's all I can think of; for now that is. If I ever do make a project involving anime/manga, it will be a very long lecture. I'm a brain wiz with ten thousand stories to make up. It's a lot of thinking.:lecture:

I guess you can say that I have, but only indirectly. A few times in my creative writing I've done a poem or something about a chacter from a anime, video game, or something of that sort.(Hell, I just finished two "Question of Strength" and "Question of Self" about Merille and Kirika from Noir.) But really thats about as much as I've ever done.

I used the anime Inuyasha, for an English paper ~which I got an ?A? on :D ~ last semester and I used my schools computer lab and computers to do most of my anime research. Although, it is a college lab and there is no way the can censor the website here. But, in my high school, I do remember them putting a blocks on the computers and they kind of need them, because you got to remember that it is ?illegal to get porn if you are under-age? ~yeah yeah I know that is not what you are looking for, but that is the real truth behind the schools blocks and some peoples use of the net~ which is why they put those blocks on the computers. And some animes are put in the same rating as porn ~word contexts & ect?. CHILL OUT and DO NOT Ask me why or get mad at me for stating ?school like thinking!!!!? I do not get it myself. But, I think that is what is going on at your school. I really do not know what to say to help fix the problem and how to show the benefits from anime in school work, but other then to go to your teachers and ask: Why they are really getting blocked in the first place? Maybe it is a school policies or something on the sites you are looking for that would be getting them blocked?

I once did a project on researching anime/manga that came out the year I was born (it was one of those easy-cheesy grades in 8th grade, lol). It was pretty easy; all I had to do was write a one-page paper and create a visual *cough* posterboard. I got stuff like Akira (movie-wise), Project A-Ko, Ranma 1/2, some Robot anime, Dirty Pair, and a couple of other titles. got quite a few compliments on the posterboard, I'm happy to say.

My school is very different than alot of other schools where i live, we have rules, but there isn't as many. Theres more freedom, and theres computers in about each room, then we have a computer lab, where alot of things get blocked, but in the class rooms just about nothing is blocked. I've never encountered hentai at my school, which i think we have a special filter or something that only gets out the bad stuff.

well anyways, i've used anime and manga for alot of my school progects ^^ and im happy to say i've gotten alot of comments on them :'D like one time for 8'th grade health class our teacher philip asked us to make a comic about drugs or drinking, and instead of makeing a one line comic like the kind that goes in the newspapers i made mine manga style, like in a book form with five os six pages. and philip(the teacher) is an artist himself and was really pleased with it XD except when we were going around the class room alot of people tore apart the book and were reding the pages instead of reading it page to page.

Another assignment i did with anime was the writing teacher wanted us to make our very own cover for our little writing booklet where we pasted all our writing entries, and for the cover instead of making a colloge with magazines i drew a picture of me in a really cutesy witch outfit ^^ and then again when the whole class went around looking at the books and writing comments alot of people were fighting over mine, :'( although i don't like it when that happens oh well, and i usually include anime in alot of my assignments, but those two were the ones i remember the most.

I've found it surprisingly useful for assignments at college. As an example, in General Studies, when others were stumped with the question of how other cultures have influenced UK society, I could provide these great examples of the Japanese influence.

In history, it could be used as an illustration of how Japan made an incredibly fast recovery after the end of WW2, when it came to managing to infiltrate world markets and regain a good cultural reputation (burying the more recent, historically-speaking, fanatically warlike reputation).

I never actually used it for art. But that's only because I was terrible at drawing, so while I like anime, in terms of watching the films and series and listening to the music, I will never draw the manga.

I never have used anime/manga for school assignments.

I have never used anime/manga for projects because teachers I have had in the past wouldn't allow it. And in the present, they won't allow me to use anime/manga for anything. In elementary school, all I could do was draw stick people, and I kept my liking for anime/manga a secret, I don't even know why.

Another reason is that some projects don't even involve or is similar to the topic. Well, maybe a science project could, but my teacher is really looking for a biology thing or something. I could never get a chance in the past to actually do something with anime/manga.

Plus, I really don't plan on using anime/manga for projects in the future because I'm not really a drawer in school although I do draw, and I usually like to write things for assingments. And if it is an art project, go stick people.

I always do reports like that! One time in GT Math, we had to do a report for the 12 days of Christmas. Well, I was like the most Anime obsessed person on the whole shool. Plus I am weird, so I spent 7 hours drawing 12 different characters from Anime and Manga, colored them, and had to cut them out and paste them too. I WAS BEAT!!:sleepy: Of course, the next day I got compliments from everyone EXCEPT my fraking weasel of a teacher. :cussing: :angry2: She just sighed at me and took it. I never did like her and I'm glad I don't go to that school anymore. My crush liked it the most though! And plus, all I know how to draw now is manga and anime charcoals, so yeah, I basically use Anime and Manga everyday at school!:D

I used a Gundam Wing fanfic I wrote for my Writer's Workshop class and got an A. I have also made pursuasive speeches in which I included how anime and other TV programs could teach about history, science, etc. I convinced the Social Studies Dept. Head that Grave of the Fireflies was a great movie to show during the study of the post-WW2 period. XD

Manga is one of the only things I will draw/can draw other than stick figures. We had to do a political cartoon and Napoleon looked like Char. O_o I got an A too. I use parts of animes as examples in problem-solution essays. I really enjoy being able to relate anime to the real world and the real world to anime.

Sephy's_Grl, did you not notice that I deleted the entirety of your conversation with Shadow Wolf? This is an excellent topic, and I feel confident that it will continue to attract discussion. Your posts, however, leave something to be desired. I've only really used anime/manga in art class, and that's mainly because my teacher is generally against it(she dismisses them as mere cartoons:rolleyes: ) Anyway, for one project, we had to do a color chart that displayed common art terms (value scale, color wheel, color mixing, etc.) and I did a DBZ theme. My color wheel was the Geki Dama, and I made Goku the value scale. There was other stuff but the important thing is that I got one of the highest grades in the class. Now I use any chance that I can get to include anime into my projects. Maybe I'll eventually convert my teacher...

I did a whole speech on it last year for English. Also, last semester, I used Kenshin pictures and an anime wallpaper for my powerpoint presentation on the book, Shogun by James Clavell. Everyone thought that I was obsessed after I finished my speech and many thought that my powerpoint presentation was very cool and neat looking.

Unfortunately, I have not used any anime or manga for school. I have, however, used American comics, such as comics from the golden age of comics and a comic about the holocaust for a paper in 20th Century History about how comics affect our view of WW2.
