The Glory Days of Saturday Morning...

As everyone knows, saturday morning is an important time for all kids and child like adults, it is prime time cartoons. Now today, we have a lot of new cartoons, more of a japanese feel, less like the glory days of saturday morning. I am talking most definetly about the late 80's to the mid 90's. This was the era of saturday morning cartoons, where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ruled the land and Ducktales were more than a word. Shows like Sonic, Dinosaucers, and Beast Wars demanded our attention.

So, what I want to know is, who remembers these days? What was your favorite shows? What are some of your favorite memories? What shows did you hate? What are some of your worst memories?

I know someone here will remember the saturday morning dynasty as I have. A time before Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Heh, as soon as I saw this thread title I got the APocalypse Hoboken lyric in my head, "Saturday mornings have turned to kiddie porn." - Pulling Worms Apart (not that I expect many of you to be familiar with it)

Anyway, I never really had what I would call "routine" cartoon-watching behavior, but I did have a group of several acrtoons that I always did watch whenever I got the chance. Such shows were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, ... heh, and who could forget the Chipmunks? The Ghostbusters cartoon was pretty cool, too.

I never really had any shows I hated ... though I was hardly ever a fan of Nickelodeon. I was all for the Public Broadcasting System. =P

The single greatest kids show of all time?

The Magic School Bus.

I absolutely love that show. I think I have some kind of intellectual crush on Ms. Frizzle, lol.

I remember every saturday I'd wake up at 8 am and call my cousin over. Once she came over, we would watch The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show!! It always was my favorite show! On Global TV:P. Then after that they would have KIDS TV on Global and I would get entertained by that. I joined that club. I GOT A BUTTON....A BUTTON!!! lol:P Then Id play my Super Nintendo lol

Anime is cool as hell, but it is more for adults or mature audiances. I dont think any anime can touch a kid the way MC Hammer did in his cartoon show. How about the Adams Family cartoon or Legend of Zelda. Mario Bros. and Savage Dragon. These were cartoons in a time when cartoons were prime. However, to prove first that I dont hate anime and second that anime did exist, the two greatest shows back in the day:

Thundercats and Voltron

Cannot get any hotter than Liono! I brought up this topic because I miss those days. I miss singing the Dinosaucers theme song or checking in on Sonic and Tails scarfing down chilly dogs.

I tried a chillie dog for the first time...JUST because I saw it on Sonic the Hedgehog!

I was one of the obsessives who would wake up screaming because my dad didn't wake me up early enough and I had missed part of a theme song...
Grab a box of cereal...not bowl...just grab a box and start munching, then turn on my first real love...Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
Oh...Power Rangers were a hot thing, too! Not the new kind that changes cast every time and keeps going longer then the friggen bunny...the REAL Power Rangers! But yea...grew out of that, too!

Growing up really sux...because now I don't have an excuse to watch it! But I remember about 3/4 of the shows sweetreyes and PiroMunkie mentioned!

You don't know how often I long for those days... Waking up early enough to see my cartoons was the only worry in the world!

You know, looking at it objectivly, without our vision being clouded by nostalgia...Today's Saturday morning cartoons are better than those of yesteryear. Most of them have higher production values and more complex storylines.

Even those that are supposed to push a product are more advanced and sophisticated than the product-pushers of the '80's and '90's. There are exceptions, of course, but on the whole, I think today's kids definatly have it better than we did in terms of toonage.

Cartoons I enjoyed:

Ninja Turtles

Garfield and Friends

Eek! the Cat

X-Men

Spider-Man (Sigh...it turned to crap after the first season...)
That's all I can remember, for some reason...Sweetreyes listed several others.

....You used MC Hammer to prove a point? Dude, that show sucked...

YOU TAKE THAT BACK! Hammerman was an awesome show. How about "The Fighting Foodtons" or whatever, whats up with that show? Anyway, I think old cartoons back were in their prime back in the 80's because everyone watched them. It was more for the children and less for the young adult. Look at the Sonic show, that show had no plot what so ever, yet it worked because it was for children.

Ah yes. Sonic the hedgehog. I remember that show. It was such an amazing show! I'd watch it all the time! Sonic was always so cool and he still is!

I also would watch shows like Felix the cat, Garfield and Friends, and those other shows with cartoon pets.
I LOVED Felix the cat. He was so amazing. He was always a black and white cat in a coloured world lol.
Who could ever forget the pink panther! He was amazing. I wouldnt miss an episode. We are currently playing that theme song in school for music class and it reminds me so much of how I would watch it so much. Then they took it off the air and I never seen it since:(. Poor panther:(

Cuase that was another awesome show from the earliy nineties. Aww the smell of cartoons with a few adult themes. Isn't it just great.

But I have to agree with this one here kripples master. Hammer man did suck!!!!
