My Book Cover (Rough Draft)

Well, let's start this thread off official. I am writing a book called The Life of Ari Dash and it has a lot of weird happenings and events occuring in it. It's mainly about a man named Ari Dash who finds out he was adopted and after his foster parents' deaths, he sets off on an adventure to find out who he is and who he was. It takes place in, probably, 1998 or so, but lots of the mystical crap happens anyways.

In one part of the book, he finds he can walk on water and walks out to the middle of the ocean where he finds a giant bird. Turns out that a large tree the size of a mountain had sunk down to the depths of the sea and the bird (close to the size of a house) got caught in it's branches. Now all that sticks out is the top branches and half the bird's body who is struggling to get free.

Anyways, this is a rough draft of how the cover will possibly look. I, of course, drew a crappy bird and when the final version is made, it'll look much better. Also, I can't draw clouds worth crap so they are originally suppose to be in there.

Any opinions, yes yes? :<

Are you planning to ink the finished version? It would look sweet that way. As for the clouds, try drawing them by making lots of quick traces. Don't forget to give it a ghostly look (which would really fit the scene). Also, you should raise the horizon line, to make the kid look smaller.

I gotta say that the bird looks beautiful (even with those painful-looking plants). The ripples and reflections kick cabooze, but the bird's could be larger.

Also, don't forget to post a link to your novel when pre-orders are available...;)

=P Yeah. Once it is published (if it is XD)

Anyways, thanks for the ideas. I was planning on inking it. I have some special art pens for that job. And it actually isn't a kid. It looks like it here, but it won't in the final draft because when I drew him, I wasn't sure if Ari Dash (the kid in the picture) would be young or old. He's actually going to be 18.

Nice job for the rough draft, and the shading is pretty smooth. ^_^.

The guy's body seems very stiff and uncomfortable, and would lookd better if you tried to make his body in the position or awe or something. I would try and concentrate on more detailed looks at water and trees, since at some places the branches look like a spider's web rather than entwined tree branches. Good luck, anyway.

Precisely! Thank you! I'm glad you noticed how they looked cob-webbed. They're actually meant to look like that. A strange idea I got in the middle of drawing the branches. In the new copy, I mean to make ann of the branches like that in a way.

As for reflections in the water, I didn't bother too much on them in the rough copy. :(

Geez, Gavin! If that's a crappy bird, then my birds look like cheap and crappy cartoon pigeons! o0; The only thing that looks a bit odd is the wings, but even then it isn't that noticeable.

Ah, I love it Gavers! Maybe in a few years when you publish it (and if I improve with my painting skills) I can do the coverart for you. ;)

A couple of years? No, no ^_^ I'm not taking THAT long to publish it. :< Hopefully...

Anyways, here's a second cover I made. Also a rough draft. I've decided to make a few to I can choose my favorite. Currently, this would be my favorite. Very majestic. If you note, there's another quote at the bottom that I made up:

"There's always a long road ahead on the path to find yourself."

It suits the storyline on how he's trying to find his origin. Also, yes, the trees look frickin' weird. That's because I made them not to look too much like trees. I didn't want them too. In the story, this is the forest that tries to kill Ari. The trees are mentioned to look like the strangest things, their features unimaginable. Note two roots, one on each side of the road, are really weird, growing upward and tentacle-like.

Merf, to that, yes yes.

And I couldn't agree more with you.

Ari looks much better than before. I think that the foreground is a little too empty, and could use something, like a shadow. or maybe a sillouette(sp?) in the light.

By the way, are you going to put more illustrations in the book? Please say yes.

Probably, but if this gets published, they wouldn't be drawings. They're definately not good enough for a book.

And I was thinking it was too empty too. The tree shadow in the backdrop is largely empty so I may add more to that.

If I doodle artwork, I'll post it so don't worry. I'm working on my third cover...
