1. Akira

2. Armitage the third

3.Ghost in a shell

My friends and I got into the decussion of if you are an anime god what movies do you have to own to be revered that... so i thought you have to have movies by the godfathers themselves...
Especially Akira.....

I am Tetsuo....

Well. Whatever happened to Miyazaki?

Although I don't consider myself a deity, I like to think that I'm fairly well versed in the world of anime. That having been said, I haven't seen two out of the three movies on your list (the only one that I've actually watched is Akira).

While Akira isn't a bad film, in my mind it doesn't live up to all its hype. It's rather open-ended--to say the least--and I didn't sympathize with a single one of the main characters. Akira's visuals are quite impressive, though, especially when you consider the fact that it's relatively old. I really liked all the scenes involving
moving toys--the idea of childhood being warped into something terrible and frightening really does has a strange sort of power.
(HOORAY!! MY NAME HAS COME TO PASS!!--TOOK LONG ENOUGH!!):D

I have 2 of those (Armitage, GitS) and I have seen Akira.
--I do have to say, though, that I don't think that makes me godly, or even a "big" anime fan...You neglected to name the genre of mecha (which is extremely popular)(I don't really like it, I just recognize it as a major factor). The titles are good, but they are only 3, whereas anime is an entire culture, not just a mere 3 movies. Also, there are many other creators that you neglected (Including Miyazaki--not that I'm a huge fan of them either). I think that having seen these movies just makes me NOT a newbie to anime. I don't even think that having seen those 3 qualify you as a die-hard Otaku--Just a not-newbie.

-Good luck with that though...

*winces*..... Miyazaki is a man, not a collective. Just thought I'd let you know. ^_~

Other than that little quibble, you've brought up plenty of good points. There are very few titles which I'd be so presumptuous as to call required viewing, and people should see anime because they like it, not for the sake of becoming an "anime god," or a "die-hard otaku." If someone doesn't like violence, then why would he or she need to watch Akira in order to be considered a true fan?

Studio Ghibli has put out many great movies, mainly ones made my Hayao Miyazaki. I dunno...Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Monoke... and there are probably more that I've forgotten. I believe that Miyazaki took part in the making of Grave of the Fireflies, which is an excellent anime by itself. Probably one of the most moving anime movies that are around today.

Akira was huge, but I think it's been toned done by today since there were so many other animes that depicted things just as vulgar and grotesque later on. I don't know, really, but maybe the reason Akira was so popular was because it was the first of its kind.

You do not need those movies to be an Anime God. To be one you must be able to understand and follow the story in Boogiepop Phantom. If you can do that, then you are a true Anime God. :D Either that, or you are in severe need of a return to reality (like myslef).

Hmm. I have seen Armitage III, and Ghost in The Shell, but would not say that either was required for Anime Godness (if that is even a word). I will admit that having GiTS is a good thing (wish I had a copy right now), and it is a very well done series. As for Armitage III, it was not as great IMO.

An anime god? Who would ever want to be such a thing?:therock:

Oh well, I do have a few titles that any hardcore anime fan should have.

First off, its best to have the classics: movies such as Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Ghost in the Shell, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, and possibly Ninja Scroll.
These are some of the biggest titles that many consider to have revolutionized anime into what it is today.

Some other good movies to have are: Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Metropolis, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Macross Plus:The Movie, Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door, Escaflowne: The Movie, Spriggan, and.....well thats pretty much all I can think of right now.

All in all the titiles listed above are some of the best and well known anime movies out there, and would be great additons to any anime fan's collection.

But then again, thats just my opinion. :D

I agree with the opinion that you don't need to see ANY anime movies to be a great fan.

That said, I agree that Akira is a great film, though sadly a little dated now.

Yet with newer great anime films, like Cowboy Bebop: Knocking On Heaven's Door and the Tenchi films, there are more and more superb anime films that are more recent.

Therefore, focusing TOO much on some of the classic anime films, won't make you an 'anime god', it will just make you limited.

Indeed.

Frankly, I don't even like most anime movies. They tend to be overly long, and in terms of plotting and character development, many are simply terrible. Just look at the film versions of X and Escaflowne. While movies may tend to have better animation than most TV shows, that's gradually starting to change. Last Exile displays some truly astounding visuals, despite the fact that it's twenty-six episodes long.

It might just be me, but I prefer television series and OAVs to the vast majority of anime films.

I like that people are giving ideas.
Yes the Mecha anime should be considered in this but i wanted to give the three most(highly acclaimed) movies.

If I wanted to fully go out i would have to interduce

Record of lodos war
Millenium Actress
Any of the Dragon ball Z movies(hence Akira Toriyama)
NInja Scroll
Ruroni Kenshin(the oav's)
Robotech
GUndam wing
Spriggan

these are kust a few but to sum up the movies to be a god would have to be a long list so i took the most revered and made this post

When I saw the thread title, I was ready to come in here and yell at everyone for not mentioning Ghibli/Miyazaki, but apparently my distress was unfounded. Heh.

And I don't need to be an anime god(dess). I'm quite happy to be merely a member of the Totoro cult.

Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite Miyazaki films, second only to the ever-wonderful Spirited Away. I personally feel that Kiki's Delivery Service pales in comparison to those two movies, but all of Miyazaki's work is above average.

Frankly, I think that attempting to create a list of must-see anime is, at best, a bit silly. Your usage of the term "anime god" really doesn't help. ^_^;; There is so much anime out there, and your choices are limited to a few genres (mainly action and sci-fi). Whatever happened to great romantic comedies like Fruits Basket and Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances)? Your list also seems to be completely devoid of shoujo.

I'm just saying that it's virtually impossible for one human being to become acquainted with every single variety of Japanese animation in existence--but without doing so, you can't claim to have compiled the requirements for anime godhood. Whatever that means. >_>

I have seen so many anime movie titles. Though, just because I've seen a lot of anime movies, doesn't mean I am a god. The movies that I have seen before are Akira, Ghost in the Shell Vampire D:Bloodlust, three Dragnball Z movies, Rurouni Kenshin OAVs, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, Metropolis, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Cowboy Bebop:The Movie, Escaflowne: The Movie, kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, X:The movie, and Grave of the fireflies. These are all pretty good movies, though I didn't really enjoy Akira, Metropolis, or Ghost in the Shell.
The three movies that you listed all fit in the same genre. You are totally forgetting the other great anime movies from other popular genres. To be an anime fan, you must be able to enjoy anime period. It doesn't matter what specific titles you enjoy.

That's a lot of DVDs and video tapes. However, dear, I don't think that you want to proclaim yourself a "diety."

I agree with you in the sense that most of your choices are excellent films, but I do have to wonder what you like about X. While its action was pretty riveting, its boring characters and ridiculously vague plot lulled me right to sleep. It would take numerous glowing reviews to make me so much as consider re-watching that movie.

X:TV, on the other hand, is rumored to be a superb series, and I'm really excited about purchasing it.
