Anyone can be a witch. Let me define witch for you since you don't seem to understand.

Witch : A believer or follower of Wicca; a Wiccan.

This isnt Snow White or Sabrina the teenage witch were talking about.

Actually if you were a true follower of Wicca, you would not call yourself a witch because that is considered Derrogatory by most wiccans. Try reading up more on the topic before you call yourself a wiccan. There are very few branches of the wiccan faith that actually call themselves witches.

*slaps self in face* Maybe you should read more before you start to throw things out. Witchs are not EVIL, there is no evil behind witchcraft. I find myself explaining this to people at school all the time. Your friends really need to smarten up.

That's on television, not in real life. Television witches have nothing to do with real life witches. Don't associate one with the other.

Anyways, witches, which should actually be called Wiccans, by their religion, are not evil. They pledge to the goddess to do no harm to any living being, unless it's an evil entity.

If you are a true Wiccan, catdemon, there should be no question to whether or not 'witches' are evil.

I don't think witches are particularly evil themselves. But my views on witchcraft are something like this:

You may be doing things for a good reason, but you're using methods which are evil. We shouldn't use magic. For what reason I haven't quite sussed yet, but that's my belief, and you don't have to go with it (because even if I say stuff like "you shouldn't do it", that's still only my opinion, not something I can force you to do)

My point is that I don't necessarily doubt your motives for doing anything, it's more that I don't believe that long-term good can be done with an evil method, regardless of the intentions of the person carrying it out.

It's incredibly hard to actually explain. No doubt I've offended a few people with my explanation so far- and that's not because you should be offended, but more because my explanation is lacking a lot more than what I believe.

Suffice to say, I don't believe witches in themselves are evil. So to answer the original question, no.

That depends. If you want to use the real definition of the word, by which I mean someone who has sold their soul to Satan, then yes, I think that is bad. But if you want to use the newly adopted use of the word, as in someone who practices Wicca, then I could care less, as it's just another religion. Of course, someone just said very few Wiccans call themselves witches, so...

Witches are cool, well as long as they aren't portrayed as green skinned wart covered grannies who seem to hate everyone especially children. That's just about the lamest way someone could portray them since it's the most obvious stereotype you could easily come up with in movies, cartoons, etc. I blame the Wizard of Oz. It could go back further than that, but I don't care it's still the Oz's fault.

As for real life witches, well they're cool too as long as they aren't putting hexes on me. It's basically like vampires. People assume they're all evil, when they aren't. Well, I'm evil, but there are others who aren't. My brother The Vampire: Mickey is a goody little two shoes, he only drinks blood from cows and goats.

I was seriously just going to say something incredibly similar to that...You beat me to it! Except I have a reason for my beliefs: I am a Christian. I believe that witchcraft is, well, wrong. In no way is it good. People can use it for good things, but ultimately, the power comes from the devil. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

No some people are saying Wicca is different from Witchcraft. Yet they haven't said how it is different...I'm not being sarcastic here, I really want to know!
To me they look just about the same, except Wicca has a belief system. (The whole symbolic three sides of the hat, the belief in a female/male spirit) But really, you're still getting your abilities from evil, so what does it matter? (Not meaning to offend here, just stating my opinion-take it or leave it.)
I would like it, though if someone did actually explain Wicca (or at least their version of it)*

*Again not meaning to offend-some people have different versions of Christianity as well. I just want you to state what you believe.

o_O.....

......

you must be new-

I'm Dan, one of the self-professed Christian God-follower extremists on OB. I just didn't include that cos I tend to assume everybody knows these days.

(I say "extremists" cos I believe that with god it is all or nothing- I follow him all the way or I don't. Which is much more extreme than the common church model. It doesn't mean I'm going to blow something up or start a holy war.)

Actually, no.

Witchcraft and Wicca are not the exact same, because for two things to be the exact same thing, one must be the other, and the other must be the one.

It is true that Wicca is Witchcraft, but not that Witchcraft is Wicca, in all circumstances.

Thus they are not the exact same, and wicca is just one of numerous forms of witchcraft.

Thus, the question may as well be repeated.

What's so special about Wicca, in particular, as opposed to witchcraft as a general grouping of practices?

By the way, the Devil thing is debatable.
Wicaans don't actually worship the devil. You don't have to tell me that. However, what Ghost said particularly was that "the power comes from the Devil". And well, that's belief, opinion, whatever. It has nothing to do with what you proclaim to worship, but to do with where your power actually comes from.

And given that Christians believe that Godly power comes from.. well, God. We're going to believe that other kinds of supernatural power given to humans through acts of worship, are going to come from the Devil- and there's not a lot you can do about that because both of us (ie. both sides- not just me and the_Ghost) think our opinion is right and neither of us are going to budge, so it's best just to state it and leave it be.

Ehem, like others said, there is no such thing as a witch, you may be confusing the term with wiccan; a follower of wicca. wiccans do not worship Satan or the devil, it was just an excuse for people a long time ago to kill execptionaly smart or any women. the Salem Witch trials was actually started by a group of girls escpecially Abigail Willams, who wanted revenge on Martha Corey for taking her love away from her. so thats how that started. people confused wiccans, and other forms of paganism with witchcraft, the art of the devil (or so my catholic friend says) actually some forms of paganism revole around nature and nutrality. I may add more history later, when i reseerch some more, *just learning*

EDIT: Dagger, it was a spelling mistake, jeeze. o.0 it's not my fault the typo fairy loves me.

A true wicca worships satan and hopes to become his dark bride one day. All the teenage ones just do it cause it's trendy.

I have no idea what an "away [woman]" is, so I can't really comment on that. However, I thought that because many people felt threatened by those who seemed to be different from them, most witch hunts targeted eccentric or unusual women (who were mainly elderly, unmarried or widowed, and lived in isolation). I don't think that intelligence was really a factor, unless a woman's intellect lead her to question the Church or perform other.... er, witch-like actions.

It's been a year or so since I studied the Inquisition, so I could be wrong. But saying that people wanted "to kill exceptionally smart . . . women" strikes me as being slightly misleading.

Right.

Although the term "Wicca" is actually quite new, in it's current context. Before it meant the religion of said name, it meant "male magician".

And like I said in the last post, there are various forms of witchcraft. Wicca is only the most common, not the be-all and end-all of witchcraft.

There are various practices of witchcraft with various gods and godesses- whereas I was kind of led to believe that Wicca had just one- a goddess.

OK, so among youth culture, maybe you won't come across many witches which are anything other than wiccan, but my point is that they're out there.

Yes, Dan you are correct, and dagger, there is such thing as spelling mistakes. and Harry, that is completely incorect.

the reson smart women were hated (feared) was because of the Roman Catholic Church, i forget excactly why, but women who showed more intelegence then a man, or somtimes a midwife, were killed.
EDIT: I just looked it up and it says it's punishment for what Eve did. i think thats also why (or so they say) women have pain during childbirth.

Firstly, Ryu, you will probably be ridiculed a bit if you cannot spell correctly or use proper grammar. I have no sympathy as the post quality of it?s members reflect upon the quality of the lounge. Quality is your responsibility..

Lastly, we?ve had several religious/witchcraft discussions on the boards here. All ended up with the wiccans shouting out the same rhetoric, "No one likes me, everyone thinks I?m a devil worshipper, wiccans are just normal people". Then the commonly Christian perspective of "Wiccan is from the devil, but the people aren?t bad (as DanL and Ghost said)" which cycles the rhetoric. If you are so "normal" why spend the effort dedicating a thread to it? I understand you wish to discuss witchcraft on OB, but it becomes a futile nusance. Wait a bit longer until we have some new personalities, members, and perspectives on the topic before re-posting another one of these.

I have to look at this from anyone?s perspective. Just as many people view Christianity in the same negative light. If a Christianity thread was brought up debating whether it was not "right" is pointless, and I?d be expected to close it.

So I?ll close this.
