What are you talking about? Kurt Cobain took his own life, and it wasn?t death through an overdose. Cobain had a history of attempted suicide, one time he actually fell into a coma after chasing dozens of pain killers with a bottle of Champaign.
On April 5th, 1994 Cobain, an avid gun collector, went into a small room in his Seattle home and shot himself. Cobain left a note for Courtney Love and his daughter Francis Bean.

I was actually listening to In Utero at the gym this morning. Every time I listen to Nirvana I remember how much I enjoy there music. Since I was a teenager when Nirvana was at its pinnacle, I was pretty engrossed in the band (and the whole grunge movement). I remember exactly where I was when I found out Cobain died. My friend and I were in the back of my Mom?s old mini-van goofing around when my mom turned around and asked ?isn?t Nirvana that band you like.? I told her yes and she said ?the lead singer just committed suicide. Oddly enough I don?t remember being surprised.

Francis Bean is the child of Cortney Love and Kurt Cobain. I wonder what happened to her...She'd be at least 8 or 9 now. (She was around 8 months- 1 year in the Silver video-I think) I wonder what she'll end up doing...considering her father killed himself over the pressures of show business, I think she'd be hesitant to go that route. That's probably why Cortney is keeping her out of the spotlight (probably the only sensible thing she's ever done)
Anyway, I'm a little young to be an original fan of Nirvana, but I love them now. I'm absolutely obsessed with grunge, and Nirvana definitely led the way on that. My locker has pictures of Kurt and the band in there (along with Linkin Park, Creed, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains pics-But Nirvana is the biggest!) I also have a copy of his suicide letter in there too. Now that is an interesting read. I often quote it "From the tongue of an experienced simpleton..."
I love the MTV Unplugged performance they did...Anybody seen that? One of the most emotional performances I've seen in a while. I don't have a favorite song...they're all good! I love the MTV Video awards performance they did (where they started to play "Rape Me" instead of "Lithium" and the producers went nuts-Classic!) The spirit of grunge will live on forever, whether you like it or not! :p

TN was kidding... it is from the subject of the thread -- which incidentally, makes me want to kill people.

In any case, Kurt had so much heroine in his system when he was found that there's no way in hell he'd be able to even move following shooting up... much less putting all his drug items away neatly and shooting himself. What he had in there was many, many times the lethal amount. It's like practically instant death.

In the end, it doesn't really matter to me. Nirvana would have probably burned out soon after anyway. Kurt was apparently on the road to recovery, but that can mean little. Look at what happened to the Carpenters, by comparison. Everyone thought she was over her anorexia and then she overdosed on Ipocac. Nirvana has been given pretty much eternal superstar status thanks to that death, as cold as that may sound.

As for the music, I was a fan. Not a big fan, but I liked some of their stuff. Since then, however, I can't say I care to listen to them. Kurt's voice is just really grating to me (especially on something like "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam"). They have some great tracks, but eh, I'd rather listen to the Foo Fighters personally. At least Kurt liked the Pixies, though.

I've never been into the whole grunge movement, if you even can call it one. I was rather happy when it pretty much died off thanks to a wave of bands that brought something heavier to the popular music scene.

Regardless, I'd play Nirvana over something like Pearl Jam any day of the week. I loathe Pearl Jam.

I like pearl jam. None of the new stuff, but pearl jam back in the day. I used to listen to Narvana because my brother had their CD. I liked a few of their songs, but I was not a huge fan. Now, the Foo Fighters, kick arse band. I like most of what they have made, with the exception of a few of their latest hits. Still, I agree with Semjaza on this, Nirvana would have died out sooner or later.

I like Nirvana well enough...it's just that they're really massively overrated lol. Their music is good and all, but there's no way that they should be ranked among the best musical acts time and time again, heh. But eh...that's the way it goes.

The vocals are up and down for the most part...I find that Kurt's vocals are far better on the slower songs, then on the faster paced songs. A lot of the faster paced stuff is just nonsensical screaming lol; I mean, I understand not understanding the lyrics the first time you hear a song, but they should be clear after a few listens, I'd think.

I like Nirvana's sound, though...nice, simple to listen to and fast (most of the time); they're good for a quick fix of music. I can pop in just about any Nirvana CD, turn to a random song and listen for a bit. The only CD of theirs that I really listen to for any long length of time is Unplugged...I always have to listen to that one all the way through for some reason <_<;

You guys have to remember, though, that in order to get to where we are today music-wise, we had to have grunge (call it a necessary evil, call it a God-send.) I mean, the metal of the early 90?s was the remnants of the spandex, ozone-depleting hair, 80's metal~I cringe just thinking about it~and even that seemed on the brink of extinction. Nirvana changed not only the look but also the sound of music. That?s probably why they get on the top band lists. I mean, they almost single handedly changes the face of music (No I?m not forgetting Pearl Jam, whose album ?Ten? was absolutely amazing, or Alice in Chains, who are also really good.) And the fact that their influences are still in music today (even though they aren?t) also makes them a great band. I do admit that because of Kurt?s suicide, they are lifted to a God-like status. They also probably wouldn?t be around now if Kurt hadn?t committed suicide. He was such a tortured whiner that I think he would?ve quit show business if he had sobered up instead of shooting himself. But heck, his whining was what made him a good lyricist, so who cares!

Cobain?s voice-love it or hate it-is hard to replicate. I mean, just close your eyes and listen. It's not the tone quality or tamber that makes his voice great. (In fact his is one of the worse voices for that. for that) It's the emotion he puts into it. He feels what he's singing, and he makes you feel it too. Okay, now I'm getting sentimental...

Personally, I think that grunge was a stepping stone to modern rock. Grunge gave the youth of the world somewhere to vent their moody, teenage angst. Heck, that?s still the way it is today! The music behind them may have changed, but the lyrical ideas are usually the same. (At least the good ones are)

Also, yes the Foo Fighters are definitely a ?kick arse band? as krippled master so eloquently put it. I like David Grohl (sp.?) a lot better than Kurt. Of course, live people are always better than dead ones?and David?s very talented. As I said, Kurt?s really whiny, and personally, I?m sick of all the whiny rock people are coming with. It?s all starting to sound the same to me.

I know this is completely off topic, but who would name their kid Francis Bean? Isn't that some kind of cruelty to children? She's probably 10 or 11 right now and working with her own set of lawyers to get her name changed.

Back to topic. I've listened to Nirvana, but I can bearly understand their music since Kurt sang like he had marbles in his mouth.

Also, my husband's best friend swears that Courtney got someone to kill Kurt. You know, one of those conspiracy theories.

What I really love now is all that publicity about Courtney and Nirvana and the rights to the lyrics. Can anyone give some insight into that topic?

I dunno, why would anyone name themselves ChibiHorseWoman on their own accord? Maybe she likes her name? What matters is that Courteny takes care of her.

Anyway, personally I dont think Love has any real right to the lyrics but shes just trying to make money, so go ahead and let her.

I saw some documentary on Kurt Cobain's death a long time ago. I, personally, believe he was murdered. As aforementioned he had way too many drugs in his system at the time to actually be able to lift any sort of weapon and shoot himself. There was also the letter, the first half talks about quitting show biz or something similar and then the hand writing changes and he abruptly goes into killing himself. There are a lot of tid bits like that which. to me, just point to conspiracy, but yea.

As for Nirvana, I think they're grossly over rated. They're good, but they've been posed to be one of, if not the best band and I just don't agree with that. Had he lived longer Nirvana would not hold the status they do, but such is the way of show business.

My opinions have been stated over and over again in this thread.

I love Nirvana. Simple fact. I love the composition in almost every song I hear from them. I love the guitars, the drums, everything. Although most people here complain about his voice, I love it. Most say Cobain has no true vocal talent, but I know that I and millions of other people couldn't sing like that. I love the way it sounds.

Someone (I think Shinmaru) said that you should be able to understand the lyrics after a few listens, but I can understand their lyrics in each song. I've never really had trouble. I think it's pretty clear.

Understanding the lyrics after a few listens doesn't determine anything for me though. There are some great bands who I would never understand the lyrics of if I didn't read them. One band being Dead Kennedys. I love their sound, but I wouldn't understand most of their lyrics if it weren't for the internet.

I believe he was murdered. It's all circumstantial evidence, which you can't convict someone on, but as Tony said, there's no way he could have killed himself. Perhaps he had someone kill him while he was drugged up because he didn't want to do it himself, or maybe Courtney had someone do it. Who knows.

OOO! You haven't by any chance heard the Weird Al parody "Smells Like Nirvana", have you? The marbles thing is in that song.

Weird Al. Now there's someone who truly changed the face of music. Why, if it weren't for him we wouldn't have all those modern rock bands utilizing the accordian, singing about food and T.V., and pretending it was their own idea. Ok., so maybe Weird Al didn't contribute crap to modern music and maybe he's not the topic of the thread so moving on now...

As to the suicide topic: I blame Courtney Love. Because I know I would shoot myself if I were married to her ;)

But seriously, I don't understand why people even argue about that. The dude was shot full of enough drugs to kill a buffalo, and he had a death wish and a gun. I fail to see any kind of conspiracy there. And Courtney was too full of drugs herself to carry out any kind of brilliant murder scheme. I mean, c'mon, give our American CSI a little credit.

I am a fan of Nirvana I guess you could say, I really didnt get into them til last year. I am not really sure what I think his cause of death was sometimes I think it was suicideother times I think it was murder(if you would like to read evidence of murder go to: http://www.karisable.com/cobain.htm). But either way Kurt is gone and yeah theres no real use in my opinion arguing over the way in which he died. He left behind a bunch of music and will have fans for years to come and people will be debating this for years I think suicide is the only reason Nirvana is as famous as they are which is sad but hey it brings in fans. Atleast Dave Grohl(Foo Fighter lead singer and guitarest/Nirvana drummer/ Queens of the Stone Age drummer/ Tenacious D drummer) will be making great music for years to come and in my opinion is a much better musician then Kurt.
