Favorite Game Music

Haha, I remember asking this "valid question" a few short months ago...but, for the sake of conversation, I'll let it slide :p

My favorite of Nintendo's music has always come from Super Metroid...the soundtrack is simply unbelievable and has to be heard to be believed. Every song fits into the game perfectly and goes with every situation in the game imaginable...plus, it doesn't hurt that they all sound fantastic, of course.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is another one of my favorites...I just love all the bouncy tunes in that game, heh. I don't think there's a song off that soundtrack that I didn't like. Nice stuff to listen to.

There's more but I'm sure other people can mention them.

My favorite soundtrack for a Nintendo game would have to be OoT. Of all games in general, this is one of my favorites. So many great tunes, the ocarina melody's I still find myself humming to this day. Koji Kondo is a wonderful composer :)

Of course there are many other classic tunes I love, but in general the OoT music just seems to stick out. :)

Hear hear! Most of his music that I've heard, I've liked in one way or another. The Legend of Zelda series features some of my absolute favorite music ever... Though I have to admit, I am just a tad obsessed with all things Zelda, heh.

Besides Zelda music, I find the themes of Metroid Prime to be amazingly well done. The Data Selection Screen and Credits themes, which are very alike, have remained my favorite tracks in the game since the times I first heard them. The Vs. Meta Ridley theme, a remix of Ridley's theme from Super Metroid, is also another favorite. *hugs my newly acquired Metroid Prime OST*

One thing that I find especially good about Metroid Prime's soundtrack is that every track in the game fits perfectly into the game. From the ominous theme that plays at the start of a new game to the triumphant Mission Final theme, each track fits the mood perfectly. And, a lot of the time, it even enhances the feeling of the game. I know for a fact that going through the derelict space station at the start of the game wouldn't have been nearly as suspenseful, and I wouldn't have been nearly as cautious going around every corner, if not for the creepy music.

Another game that definitely deserves mention is Chrono Trigger. It has some wonderfully crafted pieces of music in it, and while I don't think all that many have as much an effect on the game as Metroid Prime's music, there are still some tracks that play heavily on the game's setting to create a sense of feeling. To Far Away Times, the game's ending theme, does this very well, I think. I found a few of the game's endings to be quite touching, and the music really helped that feeling along. To Far Away Times still remains my favorite theme in the game.

Personally, I like Ikaruga's music. I just think that it fits perfectly with the intesity of the game, especially durring the boss fights.

Another game with great music is Paper Mario for the N64. I especially like the music durring the boss fights. I don't like the music durring the General Guy fight as much as I do the other boss fight tunes, but I do have to say that it fits.

I totally agree! OoT's music is outstanding! Every Ocarina tune that is played sounds so amazing. Every time I play the song I end up singin it a bit:P I also learned all the songs on piano with added extensions.

In the back of(I think its) Primus Official Legend Of Zelda OoT Guide, it shows how you can play the tune for Kakariko Village on the Ocarina i/g. It is kinda hard to do but with practice I finally did it. It sounds amazing! You should check it out Zelda Lovers!!!

I absolutly love the music from OOT. It's got to be some of my favorite video game music ever. I can't believe how amazing it is, especially when I first played it. I listen to the sound track at least every other day. The music is just the kind that stays in your head forever. I can't help but love it. :)
Indeed I do find myself humming the tunes of OOT all the time. Haha, one day I couldn't stop and everyone was telling me to shut up. :p
But I must agree, Koji Kondo is a great composer.
And how can you forget A Link to the Past? That's some of the clasicness. ;)

Well. . I am a fan of the classics. . I love Mario music (catchy. . seems to be the term that works for me too).

Metroid games have some great music that really put you into the game. . I remember playing Metroid Prime and just letting it run so that I could listen to some of the music ^_^

Zelda is also one of the best series out there for music. Like Metroid, it's music really does a great job of putting you into the game. If my imagination is going to tell me that I am running around as Link, then I better feel like I am =) And Nintendo's quality to excellence happily goes beyond just the gameplay and visuals. . the music just keeps on shining ^_^

Lastly, one of my big favorites -- Chrono Trigger. . the music is just beautiful in the game and really sets the mood for the story. Whatever age you travel to in this great game, you really feel like you are in that time period.

I guess I could go into more games. . but these are my big favorites. . then I have a sub catergory of not as favorite favorites. . and then the sort of favorites, but not as favorite as my not as favorite favorites. . lol. . Yes, I can shut up, but no, I usually don't =)

Well, although it may seem strange, I really like the music in Luigi's Mansion. Some of the music I found in that game I couldn't stop humming or 'duh-duh'-ing to for days.

Of course, I have to mention the Zelda series. The music in those games were even catchy on the old NES when the first one came out.

As many have said already, the Metroid series (Prime, in particular) have very emersing soundtracks.

But, I looked through this topic and found no one mentioned the original Final Fantasy series! All of the Final Fantasy series music is very good, and the NES & SNES ones were no exceptions. The battle music is about as good as music in those days gets. Sure, the series has moved on to other systems, but the music's core still comes from the original games.

Well, everyone else already took the words right outta my mouth for OoT and Chrono.

However, I can't help but mention Mr. Iwadare's game music (Grandia/Lunar). Those're the only games whose tunes that are catchy enough that actually I hum to myself, usually when no one's around. :cross: And I can play most of them on my acoustic and soprano recorder. The music also puts me in a bouncy mood.

Nintendowise, it would have to be the SNES Mega Man games. Each stage brings back musical nostalgia of the early 90's, when I was in grade school and the SNES and Sega were hot stuff. I also like Mega Man and Bass's stage music.

I've always liked Capcom's side-scrollers. ^_^

Heh most of the one that I've picked are already down here by several other members but here goes:

1] Legend of Zelda Series: The Music this series has always been superb and set the mood for ever scene with great accuracy and distinction. I have the Windmill music from The Ocarina of Time on my hard-drive and enjoy listening to it at any given interval. The music from the Wind Waker, even though some of it was taken from previous games it still had an excellent music score.

2] Star Wars: How this was over looked is beyond me, I mean the music scores from the Rogue Squadron as well at the Jedi Knight series are just suberb and are able to get you in the mood of the game and keep you in it.

3:] The Mario Series: More classic gaming with classic music, the theme that used to play at the start of most of the Mario has kept fresh and likable for as long as there have been Mario games to put the on.

Well that's it for me.

There was a game called "Wipeout 64", which wasn't about water-sports in any way. But it had an edited version of Absurd by Fluke on it. Dopest song to ever hit a videogame.

Well is there really any Nintendo music that isn't good??? But in all seriousness I'd have to say my favourite Nintendo music is from the Legend of Zelda, particularly Ocarina of Time. That music was just so good, I can't really explain why, it was just good.

Another game that has good music is Resident Evil, that music added a whole new level of creepiness to the game that couldn't be done with any other musical score. The haunting pianos in the background as you walked down an empty hallway, I soiled myself on more than a few occasions in that game.

Other good ones include Super Smash Bros. Melee, who doesn't want to hear their favourite Ninty tunes of old remastered by an orchestra.
the Mario series, that game just had good music, no question about it. I often find myself humming along to the music when I play these games.
Eternal Darkness, much for the same reasons as Resident Evil , although not as scary.
and the Metroid series, the musical score in this game just fit perfectly into the games setting, and Metroid Prime's music was a work of art.

My absolute favorite vgame music...hmmm... Chaos Legion for PS2 has some awsome creppy gothic-orchestra music that I really love to listen to (has a Devil May Cry and Castlevania mix feel to it, even though it's one of the hardest games EV-ER, that's besides the point). Also, there were a couple of themes/songs in Xenosaga that was really cool (I think one is called "The Ressurection", and the music playing during the Last Battle kinda suits the mood/theme so that's cool too) I gotta go buy some soundtracks...

For old-school games, I'd have to say the music from the Sonic games (although, I'm just slightly biased!). I am constantly humming this at school, pissing everyone off! Second would have to be the Mario Bros theme. Man, that is catchy!

For new-school games, I believe that both Kingdom Hearts and Shenmue (especially Shenmue 2) take this award together. Both had wonderful music that always matched the action happening on screen, whether it was a huge fight or a really sad moment
(like Sora losing Kairi again at the end of Kingdom Hearts after fighting so hard to get her back...*sniff*)
. Truly awesome.

Ooh! I forgot to mention Initial D! The music in this game is truly amazing. The music in this is less dramatic (as its for a racing game, not one with sad moments like the previous two) but it matches the action perfectly! I can't imagine Initial D without Space Boy or Gamble Rumble...*sigh*.

*goes off to play Initial D again*

Here they are, in no particular order, the five best soundtracks I've listened to (and I have about 12 gigs of VG music).

Chrono Cross
Legend of Mana
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Xenogears
Lifeforce (Gradius Salamander U.S. release)

The above are all worth purchasing (though Lifeforce you can't find so don't even try I'm not even sure a soundtrack exists; just try to get as much Gradius music as you can from the internet)
Xenogears and Chrono Cross are in my opinion Mitsuda's best. Chrono Trigger and Xenosaga are great too, but they don't have quite as many memorable melodies I think. Though the Chrono Trigger theme, you can't beat that (but it's in Chrono Cross also).
Ocarina, well this thing is just a masterpiece. Hyrule Field brings back so many great memories (yes, the game does help the music).
Legend of Mana has a lot of good stuff. It's one of the better soundtracks by Shimomura, although Mario RPG and Kingdom Hearts are also really great. Legend of Mana has a wonderful end credits song.
Lifeforce is just awesome. It's what really showed that Konami music kicks the crap out of most anything else. And it was a great game.

Something important to add is I haven't played Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and Legend of Mana. Those pieces bring back no memories or nostalgia or anything. They are great on their own, and that says a lot.

Lifeforce was and always has been my favorite shooter. I love every last minute of that game and play it all the time to this day.

The soundtrack does infact exist. It even has songs from Salamander, Salamander 2 and Lifeforce on it. You can get it here: http://www.otaku.com/cgi-bin/itemview.asp?itemid=62363l

Okay, the last four posts in here have had very little to no reason behind the choices of music. If you people want this thread to remain open, I suggest you start putting a little more effort into your posts.

What are your opinions? I have all the soundtracks for FF 7~10-2 and have played the HELL out of them. To anyone who has listened to them (or just hummed along to the tunes in-game...YOU KNOW YOU DID! :D ) which game had the best composed music?

My choice: Final Fantasy X

Although my personal fav is Faye Wong's Eyes On Me from FF VIII.

An interesting side note...I didn't even know One-Winged-Angel (the song during the fight with Safer Sephiroth near the end of FF VII...you know the angel) had lyrics to it! Well actually...to be honest it is in Latin but I was able to find a translated version. Interesting lyrics...

Well, since you got me started, :smirk:

I have a strange need to have Soundtracks from a lot of Nintendo's games. Zelda is always one of my top choices along with Mario, Metroid, Star Fox, & Kirby....

And then there is Squaresoft. Most of the reasons my Final Fantasy characters are always on a really high level is because the battle theme is so cool that I keep wanting to hear it (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7-10, Chrono Cross, and Kingdom Hearts are all prime examples of that). :D

All last(that I can think of) but not least, is Megaman. I don't know why, but I love almost everyone of the songs in Megaman, especially the Robot Masters' Theme in Megaman 2.

Don't worry, I'll be back... ;)

Hmm well it's been a while since I posted here so I might as well give it another go, recently I played and complete Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time for the Gamecube a few weeks ago. I have to say that it has one of the best sound tracks on any game I've played, the music for puzzles is moody and instrumental in parts giving you a sense of foreboding as you make your way through the dead palace.

When the combat comes along the music kicks up into something special, along with some great instrumental music there's brilliant Soprano vocalism that helps you to real feel as you're fighting the hoards of undead Sand-Creatures. I can't really give a great description of the overall music though I would advise anyone who has the opportunity to rent or buy this game to do so just to listen to the music to it.

I totally agree with you. Most of the Mega Man games (or the platformers, to be fair) have had some awesome soundtracks over the years. They aren't the type that you could just, you know, sit down and listen to in order to set moods and such, but they fitted the agenda tremendously, especially considering the premise of Mega Man; all futuristic and bum-tard roboty.

It's funny how Capcom have kept a nice track-record of these soundtracks, though, because, in typical Mega Man fashion, they all sound the same and have a somewhat unique ring to them that other games of the same genre just can't copy lol.

Despite all that garbage though, my favourite ever video game soundtrack is Tetris' Song B. It's just that damn good, and you probably know it, too.
