What would you do if you were president?

Do you guys remember in elementary school when your teacher would assign strange topics like 'What if you could talk to the animals?' or 'What if you were president?' Well, if not, you're elementary school was out of the ordinary.

Anyway, there's all this talk on the board about elections and the state of the union address. So, now I'm wondering, what would you do if you were president-or in some cases-Prime Minister (That is the same right?)

As for myself I'd repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy thet the United States MIlitary has. For those of you who don't know, this policy states that you may be gay and be in the miliatry, but if anyone finds out-you're out. Yes, you get and honorable discharge, but you're out of the military. I think this is one of the dumbest policies the military has-right up there with the rule about missionary position only. This is why I would get rid of the rule. Of course, I'd have to get the Senate to apporve the bill, but I can be persuasive.

After that I'd allow same sex marriages for the same reason I'd repeal the Don't Ask DOn't Tell Policy. I mean, you'd have to figure that you couldn't have one removed and keep the other up there.

I'd also try to improve education, but I'm not quite sure how I'd do that. You need some kinds of standardized testing, but you'd also need to have tests for children who learn differently-which adds up to a lot of hard work-but more teahcers which could mean more jobs. But don't rush me in this, because I'm not running for office.

Edit: After further consideration I've also decided that the partiot act needs to be repealed due to the fact that I feel it violates the part in the constitution which guarantees all US citizens due process. (whatever that means) And it seems rather barbaric as well.

So, what would you do? And remember, play nice

Let me get this out now. WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER SOL. As a 12 year old 7th grader, i know. I'm sick of them things, and i got like....5 more years of SOLs alone..not counting college.(and i can't fail a single one either..that's what really sucks)

What i would do is probably make the SOL tests more..flexible. You know..make it so you can bomb ONE and still graduate High.

I'd also make it so there is no forced draft... because of my religion (Jehovah's Witness) i cannot serve in the millitary..so..do the math.

That is what i'd do. Then, i'd probably make skateboarding the national sport and ban hockey and baseball.

Nate's right. I'm just asking the old Elementary school question about what woudl you do?

This isn't a let's beat up on Bush topic-those have been done to death so let's not beat a dead horse *looks @ her screen name* Uh, no pun intended.

I would definately not ban hockey, but I might band cheerleading. Atleast wrestling cheerleading and soccer (football) cheerleaders because I think that's one of the dumbest things in the world.

After that-I'd make child molestation and rape punishable by death. But hey, that's just me.

Uhm...first off Nate...Ban baseball and I will personally assassinate you!!

What I would want to do as president.....

First off I'd like to give equal press rights to all American students. I live in Kansas and am in one of six states that students have actual full press rights. I think that it is important to give kids press rights. I mean that gives them a freedom of representation and gives them an outlet, but also introduces them to the real world. Compromise and such, makes them more responsible. You can't just write anything and pass it off as truth.

Second off. Definatly what Chibi-Horsewomen said. I'd un-ban gay marriages. I think its perfectly fine, of course thats pretty much a biased opinion on my behalf, but oh wells. Love is love, I don't think any one person can restrict that.

Thirdly I'd like to attempt to restructure the Coast Gaurd back to its original use. I think the "threat" of terriosism has gotten America tying its hands behind its own back. We have too much Coastal Protection in my opinion, I think they need to go back on concentrating on our own enviroment as well as terriost attacks.

I'm not what you'd call an enviromentalist but I just think that we're letting too much crap get into our oceans.

*nods* Yes, rapists shal die! Ahem... My Report:

What Would I do If I was President?
First, I would make this place truly the land of the free, I mean people in NYC get arrested all the time for stating thier opinion, (Me being one, dispite I'm 12). Then I would equalize power, and limit weapon manufaturing. Soon after that I would ban guns ect... unless you passed a special test (almost impossible ect...), and you were 20 and older, or If you were law enforcement(special law enforcment). Next I would ban religios stuff, like "God Bless America" It is rude, hurtful and mean to other relions, but when it's on public property, I woudn't alow it, privite fine, parks and monuments? no. To finish that up I would change In god we trust on all the money and stuff to In Her We Trust, ya know that Statue of Libetry? at least that is less religous. I mean I could add more but then This would probaly extend to about 24 pages typed arial 12. Oh, and I just noticed I forgot the one I was most steamed about well, 2 actually, I would un-ban gay marrages, like others already said, and I would make it so kids in texas, cristian or not do not have to pray at the beginning of school. (It's true, from what I hear.)

I just want to say that he makes a good point here. The last thing that schools need is more standardized testing lol. Kids don't really learn anything from them and they take away valuable time from teachers, who could be teaching children things that actually matter. I should know...my classes were bombarded with useless standardized testing all last year.

*I removed it for you, Chibi. I think you are allowed to delete a post by editing it...*

As for the thread...

I'd make it illegal for people who knew nothing about politics to ever speak about them again. Screw free speech in that case.

Also, I think I'd make it mandatory for anyone with a cell phone to take some sort of cell phone etiquette class. People are really damn rude with those things.

Obviously, I don't have very high goals lol.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to be president. Too many have ruined the title president all together, and I would almost feel it dishonering to be called "the president" of this country. But I guess if I really did have to be pres., i would most likely try to change some of the crap that has come about since i was born. Especially all the money problems, too much money is just basically thrown away when it could be used for many other issues. Presidency in general is a hard topic to discuss, and many arguemnts will most likely come out of it.

I'd reform medicare and social security, and do it damn fast. The elderly on government welfare are going to outnumber the working members of society very soon, and no one's going to win in that situation.

('Tis a tough problem indeed: how do you get money to the elderly folks who actually need it, while at the same time not placing a huge financial burden on the younger ones?)

:therock: You're going to trust a statue? I suppose then if we're under attack by a terrorist you're going to ask it to uproot itself and ward off the enemies? Or what about a cataclysm? I'd sure like to see a statue try to stop that.

Eh, I don't know what I would do if I was the president. I'd probably make it mandatory for all senior citizens to retake the driving test every other year or something. I might also raise the legal drinking age to 25, but I doubt people in this world would take it seriously.

Force the American states to have a decent voting system, with some sort of standards and with less room for cheating. You've got to admit that it's a bad situation when I country (Iraq) that hasn't been able to vote for twenty years and has no infrastructure will have a more secure and reliable vote than the country that "liberated" it. Even when they haven't had power/phone/fresh water restored... Though if I was really the president I doubt I would do this because it would get rid of a humours thing for the rest of the world to laugh at, except for the country?s that are attacked by the person that was voted in that is.

If I got the head of the Australian government I think reform would be on the cards, efficiency is some thing many areas are lacking and throwing money at things is only a short term patch. This would mainly be the army, government it's self, government owned entities like Tel$tra and the heath care system. Also return some powers to the states while moving some to federal level and some other big problems in the current system, looking for a decent and viable way to become a republic wouldn't be off the list but not vital.

For starters, if I was president I would drag Bush out of the office first!!!

After that, I would declare to get rid of TAKS tests and other tests that has the cost of a million dollars. In news, schools are spending up to over millions of dollars; and it's creating a huge flaw over the economy. My solution is "GET RID OF IT!!!!" I mean, what's the point of taking them when they know that we'll probably not pass it and have to repeat our own grade again. Do they want us dumb or what? I'm sick of this.

Also, I would talk/ negociate first before planning for the war. There is no way America will be spending billions and billions of dollars for nothing. It's happening now; and people are being fired from jobs, out of homes, and other worse situations. I will do what ever I can to prevent that from happening again.

Sometimes I wish I had magic powers; I really wished that. All I know is in life, you have to have faith in God and anything is possible. I believe that; and I think Bush should too. He's a christian, he should know and believe that.

There're a lot more I could do, but I'm fresh out of ideas. Too sleepy!
Just out of interest...what powers would you return to the states and which would be put into federal hands?
For lack of a list, mainly because I don't plan on being a politician, I would be looking at what was there and making a judgment on that. Things like what the federal parliament, state governments and local councils don?t/do have and what they really need out of those.
Off the top of my head one of the topics that would need to be looked at would be taxation at local, state and federal level; there is overlapping, loop holes and unfairness to people being taxed and the government; in the way it is allocated and the abilities of governments to apply it. (I seem to remember stamp duty was one of these cases where in some parts of Australia you had to pay it three times.) But that's only an example; and I assume if there are problems like that in one area they would also be in others and I have heard of a few others.
Also I believe there are some laws and restrictions that make it harder for the states to make systems of things standardised with other states or for the federal government to call for standardisation in areas and also states when they want to do something might be restricted, I remember last year Beattie was complain that QLD couldn't do something because the controls for it were at federal level and there didn't seem to be any point or reasoning behind why it wasn't state controlled, though any laws made or adjustments on that sort of thing would have to be very defined.

I don't know, to me, what I see just looks disorganised, illogical and it just leads to wastage of time, money and efficiency.

Newsflash: Boba Fett is now President Boba Fett

Let?s see, as my first act as president of the United States, I?d withdraw all public funding from NPR. A public radio station should be completely unbiased, only reporting the facts. NPR is decidedly left wing.

I?d scrap President Bush?s new immigration policy that will naturalize millions of ?hard working illegal immigrants.? These people entered our country illegally; they shouldn?t be rewarded fro breaking our laws. As president, I?d deport every last one of them.

Today, the US-Mexico border is pathetically porous. I?d use the National Guard forces of the Border States to assist in patrolling the border.

I would also repeal small portions of the Patriot act, that allow agents of the federal government to do the following:

-Search your house without a warrant, the agents merely notify the appropriate judge

-Hold a US citizen without charging him/her in a military facility.

After heavily scrutinizing the US budget, I?d cut all ?pork? programs that as a waste of taxpayer dollars. The budget needs to be trimmed, heavily.

After putting pressure on congress to make President Bush?s tax cuts permanent, I?d sign that revised legislation into law.

The IRS also needs help, I?d increase both its staff and it?s budget. Currently minorities of tax returns are actually scrutinized by the IRS. This increase in manpower would ensure that nobody cheats the government out of tax dollars.

Speaking of taxes, I?d burn the current tax code. I?d impose a flat income tax, which would be no more than 10%. This would stop punishing successful and wealthy Americans for making large amounts of money. Currently, the top 10% of wage earners pay over half of US taxes. This is wrong and I?d fix it.

Finally, I?d scrap the Mars program and all space projects with the exception of the International Space Station. I?m all for ?The Final Frontier? and all that stuff, but let?s be realistic. We have a national debt of one trillion dollars. Lets reduce it to a manageable level before we shoot money into outer space.

There?s my first term in office. Granted it?s not all I?d do, but it?s a start.

If I were New Zealands Prime Minister, I would move to cut ties with the British Monarchy and end over 150 years of British sovereignty. I would move to establish our own congress and a New Zealand-born head of State would be democratically elected by the people of New Zealand. It makes absolutley no sense to have a head of state that is so distant from our people.

I would move to have tertiary education publicly funded again, like it once was. I would move to regian our State owned Enterprises which were sold out to private organizations in the 1980's/1990's. I would bring back the traffic police if I could. That was a separate force that watched ove rour roads, and was more efficent that just having the odd speed camera.

I would build my election campaign moost of all on cutting ties with the monarchy and becoming a separate state. I'm sure most New Zealanders would like the chance to take our own country into the future.

If I were president, I would probably first get rid of the electoral college. It is an outdated process and (aside from the Supreme Court) helped someone so obviously incompetent as Bush get into office. I don't want to turn this into a Bush-bashing post. I'm merely pointing out that this country really can't take another president like him. I would also pass very strict gun-control laws (there goes all support from the South) as well as un-ban gay marraige. I feel that if gay couples think they're right for each other, they reserve the right to marry each other. Remember that all of the arguments being used against gay marraige today were used against interracial marraige 50 years ago. Let's see, what else... I would focus on reducing the  MULTI TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT  hmm..... sounds kinda impossible now that I look at it.

First post. Woot.

If I became Prime Minister, I would frigging fund the TTC. For any one who has ever had to use it, ever, you will agree with me.

I would do everything I possibly could to properly fund our education and health systems. I need to look at those pie charts my dad promised to bring home for me--I just don't understand where all of our money is going...*sigh*

I am quite sleepy at the moment, so my rant may sound rather random and may lack structure, but please, bear with me.

I would clear out the Catholic school board, as far as government funding goes--IMO, Quebec whines too much. A single school system is what this country needs. Desperately.

I would toss away all that crap about not letting outstanding students go to university at the age of thirteen--who cares about "feeling comfortable amongst your peers"? I mean, really, folks...

I would properly support our metropolises, instead of handing them "bandaids".

Scrawled across one of those adds: Who's funding these adds?

The TTC is, people.

Oh, and for goodness' sake, stop privatizing the highways!
