Well, I couldn't find another thread like this that was recent. If I had missed one, I'm sorry.

So, yes, this is a thread about your choice of the top five movies of the previous year, 2003. Don't worry about what others think- it's your choice. Choose from movies you like. Make sure you tell why.

5.) Bruce Almighty- A hilarious, good time movie, but not one of Jim Carey's best. The humorous parts were, well, funny, at times. Some of the parts could of done a lot better, such as the time where Jim found out he did make co-anchor, and just froze there. I think that they made that last too long. In my opinion, they could of made him go a little more ballistic than he did.

4.) Haunted Mansion- My favorite Eddie Murphy film, this was very well done. At first, I saw it as a corny, kid's flick, but when I saw it with my friends, we all jumped a lot!
Especially when he bent down, then stood back up, and looked into the mirror and saw himself... as a, well, a rotting carcass.
All the actors did very well - especially the two ghosts and the gypsy. The plot was new, although it had an olden twist to it.

3.) Jeepers Creepers 2- The best horror movie sequel ever. Although it didn't have much scene changes, it went in-depth with a lot of the characters, and spent time on emotions with each and every one. Not to mention, there were really cute guys. ;) Anyway, the whole basis of the movie is a lot better than the first film. In the first, it had what, four main characters? Including the monster-guy-thing. This sequel showed that a movie could be very, very good even with a lot of characters.

2.) X2: X-men United- A great Marvel comic brought to life in this continuation. This is much, much better than the first. The first, to me, was boring as hell, although I still love it. ^_~ Might be my soft spot for comics, but I do. X2 brought new heroes, and new villians, in a very good setting. Pyro's performance was astounding, although I wished he was cuter. -.-; This story, again, was based on Wolverine's past, although they were able to add in some more storylines in there too, without making it seem like it was packed in there just to be in there.

1.) 2 Fast 2 Furious- Yes, yes, I know, a lot of you hate this movie. But I love it. It could use some better acting, but not much. In this movie, it tells the past of Brian O'Connor in a passive way, while at the same time, plans his future. His relationship with Roman Pearce shows how much he regrets his past life, and explains why he let Dominic go. I know some people who think this movie is just a thrown together one because Vin wouldn't do it, but I don't think so. If you listen to the audio commentary, it was already planned.

Fun Fact #2945: Pointing out another's SPAM by posting is just as bad, if not worse than the original offender. This is called "Playing mod" and most people find it incredibly annoying when others do this. You aren't a staff member, and do not have the authority or responsibility to worry about the post quality of others. Being so keen on the rules, I suggest you actually read them. Try to be more careful about the way you criticize other members in the future, because hypocrisy is not tolerated here. -Shy

I'm going from 1 to 5! Nya!

1. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - This is most likely the best film of the year, like the two other movies before it. The last and best of the trilogy! The graphics from Weta are awesome, from the eagles to Gollum, and the acting is great as well. The story is awesome and Peter jackson did an awesome job of translating Tolkien's words to reality! The battles are amazing and New Zealand is so Beutiful! (And of course my fav. actor is in it!)

2. Pirates of the Caribbean - Another great film staring non-other than Johnny Depp. I loved this movie alot, it was action and comedy blended together perfectly. Although I had to see it twice to understand how the whole curse thing worked, it was still great and full of laughs.

3. Bruce Almighty - My favorite Jim Carrey movie yet. To me, when I look at a comedy (Unless it is a romantic one) I think that it will usually be very funny, yet, have no good story line or plot, but Bruse Almighty was halarious and the story was pretty good as well. "And that's the way the cookie crumbles" has become a little joke of mine.

4. Big Fish - (This did come out in 2003 right?) I just saw this about a week or so ago and thought it was great, though it wasn't what I expected it to be, I still thought it was a good movie. I'v always been one for tall tales and such and thought this was a great film. It has some far fetched characters and it has humor. I didn't cry at the end, but I know my mom did *snickers*

5. X2: X-men United - x_x Ok, sadly, I just saw this movie for the first time two days ago. Though I think story line could be better, I think it's still an awesome movie with action and mutant stuff ^^ I'v never read the comics and i'v only seen the newer cartoon series when the mutants are all Teen agers. I really liked the action and it had a little bit of laughs here and there. I was very excited to see the German, Kurt, to pop in.

The fact that anyone would even name Jeepers Creepers 2 in a best anything makes me sick to my stomach. What a freaking horrible movie. I already complained about that in its own thread though, so I won't bother here heh. I've not seen half the "Oscar worthy" movies out there, so eh lol... here's mine.

1.) Big Fish - Most people probably saw this in 2004, but it opened on Christmas here. I saw it the day after and absolutely love it. Good story, great characters, great imagery. Solid all around. What a great ending, too.

2.) Cabin Fever - Freaking awesome. When we left the theater after this, most people were complaining that it was more funny than good. What did they see? Yes, it's humorous. Good horror movies of this type usually are. You can't deny how brutal it was at times and it was just so random. Loved it.

3.) Finding Nemo - I think this was a bit more patronizing than some other Pixar films. I also could have done without the surfer turtles, and I swear I'm the only person on the planet who wishes some fisherman would cook and eat Dory. However, the film looked amazing. It had a good story. It had good characters. I've seen it a few times and it's just as good still.

4.) House of 1,000 Corpses - I know for a fact most people will hate this movie. They will say it's nasty, has no redeeming factors, etc. I don't care. Some people say Rob Zombie took this too seriously and wound up with something that turned out to be a joke. Personally, I think it's more of a tribute or a satire. It's so ridiculously weird that I don't know how it could be anything else.

Cheesy dialogue, bizarre scene shifts, cliche teenage fodder, insane evil characters... Sure, sometimes it felt like things were stuck in just for the hell of it to see what could be gotten away with, but what the hell. I thought it was a lot of fun. Plus it was just so relentlessly violent. It's not scary, it's just plain mean.

However, unlike the TCM remake (which I hated, by the way), I enjoyed this despite its mean spirit. The killings were weird and original (my main issue with the TCM remake...). The gore was incredibly well done. It actually had a sense of humor, as messed up as it was. Great make up effects. I also think that the actors did a great job with the stilted dialogue many of them were given (another thing I think was done on purpose, honestly).

I don't know, I really enjoyed it. Enough to see it twice in the theater. I've never done that before.

Dr. Satan and the giant guy (whose name I forget), really need their own movie. Especially the giant guy. What an awesome creation.

5.) [strike]I guess a tie between X-Men 2 and Return of the King. Both were good. Return of the King loses some of its flair since I've read the book and seen the stupid cartoon...[/strike]
Kill Bill, Vol. One

1.) The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions: I loved both movies, as everyone already knows. I find the story incredible, and the work that was put into this is amazing.
The end of this trilogy was very touching, and sad but I believe it fitted.
2.) The Last Samurai: The way they depicted the Samurai's life, and showing the small everyday tasks performed great. I loved watching
the way Algren had started out; as a soilder with a crude past, then ended up finding the peace he so longed for.
I think they could have slowed it down a bit on some of the fighting sequences but overall this is a great movie.

3.) Bruce Almighty: I've always loved Jim Carrey. His wild antics crack me up every time.
The whole idea of Bruce being god for a day
was interesting, and all around great. Actually I used mix e, a, and u in beautiful alot untill I saw this, lol.

4.) Shanghai Knights: This was great! I found it very hilarious, and entertaining. A mixture of Chinese culture in the upper class society of England. Jackie Chan in England? You have to love it.

5.) Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: The visual effects were nice, and the ending was something diffrent. I still prefer the second one over this however.

5) Bend It Like Beckham - I didn't really want to see this film, but I was glad I did. With all the big budget, over the top films, it was nice to see a simple film about real life. I instantly became a huge fan of Parminder Nagra. Add to that the sex appeal of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and you have a sure winner.

4) Finding Nemo - With two little brothers, we've become accustomed to watching a movie time after time after time every day. With Nemo, I actually sit down to watch it with them! It was pure joy and I love Ellen as it is, so to "watch" her performance in this movie was a treat for me.

3) Chicago - It's rare to see a mostly faithful film adaptation of a Broadway musical done well. This was very nicely done. When I first heard that Richard Gere was going to be singing and dancing, I was doubtful. But the man inpressed me.

2) Freaky Friday - So shoot me. It was a cute movie. I love Jamie Leigh Curtis - have since the first time I saw Halloween, which was my first JLC movie - and I think Lindsey Lohan is too cute for words.

And #1....

1) From Justin To Kelly!

Ok, I jest. Never saw it.

1) Matrix Reloaded - Ok, I know this isn't a popular choice. I like the first one. I loved this one. I don't pay to see a movie more than once. And I see very few movies at the theater. But I paid to see this 5 times in the first week it was out. The playground fight was worth every penny. It was because of Reloaded - not The Matrix - that I wanted to know more about the world of the Matrix. I went Matrix crazy. Animatrix? Fave animated shows. So, imagine my disappointment at Revolutions. I waited six month for it, based on the pleasure Reloaded brought me, only to be severely let down.

That's my 5.

1. The Last Samurai -- this movie had everything. It had a gripping, even if not original, story, it had superb acting, well-choreographed and filmed fights, wonderful cinematography, and a very memorable score. I'd say it's the year's best film.

2. X2 -- I can't think of too many problems with this film. Most of the cast did a great job once again (coughcoughHalleBerrycoughcoughwhat'sherproblem).

3. Pirates of the Caribbean -- Johhny Depp pretty much made the movie for me. Everything else was stupid. The plot made no sense, the acting on other peoples' part was bland, etc., but it was still fun as heck to watch.

4. Hollywood Homicide -- almost nobody saw this. It started out kinda slow, but the second half of this movie is a riot. Harrison Ford doesn't dissapoint. Does he ever?

5. Master and Commander -- I can't believe I'm even putting this boring-as-hell thing up here. I guess the acting kept it afloat. Ugh. Pardon the pun, didn't even think about it. Anyway it's just that all the other movies I've seen this year sucked bad.

The undeserving: Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, LotR: Return of the King, T3, other stuff

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
--Oh please, do I have to argue this? Lord of the Rings is possibly the only trilogy ever made that actually got better with each movie. Now that I look back on The Fellowship of the Ring, it's actually boring when compared to the others. The battle scene in the movie is huge, grand, and bloody awesome. ^_~ I wish I had an English accent. >_>. Anyways...the acting isn't too shabby either. Just look at all the dedication, time, effort, and work that has been mixed together to make this movie. I mean, could you imagine the work done to create such huge battles and settings? If anything, Peter Jackson should definately get Best Director at the Oscars [already scored it at GG!] and should really be considered to win Best Picture [won that at GG, too ^_^]. *steals KKC's avatar*

Finding Nemo
--This movie is great. It appeals to practically all audiences, is actually funny, and just a fun movie to watch. I thought the graphics were great, Dory [whatever] was hilarious, and the overall movie was amazing. ...and I swear I'm the only person on the planet who wishes some fisherman would cook and eat Dory. *stares at Semjaza Azazel in a bad way*

I know I only listed two, I post the rest later.

Well, I'm hoping I can think up five movies I really liked last year by the time I'm done writing about the first...

1) Habla Con Ella (or Talk to Her) was released in 2002 in Spain, about exactly a year later it was finally released in the states. The movie was directed by my favorite, the one and only Pedro Almoldolvar and although it doesn't hold the same amount of sly wit as his others, it is still undeniably Almoldovar. The movie is, in short, about two men, one a nurse and the other a writer and the women, a dancer and a bullfighter, they love who both happen to be in comas. It's extremely captivating, really very wonderful.

2) Kill Bill, Vol 1. I really enjoyed this, although I think if it weren't for the promise of a second part I'd feel a bit disapointed. I think it does what its supposed to do, and very well at that.

...so yea, I wait 'til everything comes out in video, and what?

1. S.W.A.T- What a movie! It was amazing acting, amazing action, and the story was smooth and unpredictable. I know it sounded boring, just another Cops and Robbers movie. But that isn't the case.
The criminal offering one hundred million dollars to anyone who broke him out of jail and the police being forced to protect him was an amazing idea.
2. 2 Fast 2 Furious- Come on, how can you not like this one? The cameras for the races were excellent. You could feel your heart pumping; I almost felt like I was behind the wheel. Not every street racing movie does that to you.

3. X-2: X-Men United: Another good one. I'm a sucker for action movies. lol
NightCrawler was a very cool character.
It was really cool how he infiltrated the White House in the very beginning of the movie. His teleportation is nice.
Ian McKellen (Gandalf) did an excellent job as Magneto, and although Mystique was a little weird looking, her human actress was pretty good.
Lady Deathstrike was another great actor.

My list seems pretty generic, but these are the five movies from the year that stick out in my mind. Seeing some of these other lists' makes me lose faith in humanity to a certain degree, but I guess everyone's a critic these days...

Kill Biill: Volume 1 - If you haven't seen "Kill Adam" in the Adventure Arena you probably don't realize what a huge effect this movie had on me. This was my first QT film, so everything from the directing style to the dialogue seemed fresh and exciting to me. Like the original Matrix, I really think this is one of those movies that will influence the genre for years to come; overly-stylish action movies are nothing new, but this is one of the very rare examples of a movie can do it well. Kill Bill is more than just mindless action, this movie has a brain behind it. But beyond all that, Kill Bill has an awesome knife fight in the beginning, so for that reason alone you should see it.

X2 - It really hurts not being able to put any of the other comic book movies from 2003 on this list. Daredevil somehow managed to be "too dark" and "not dark enough" at the same time, which resulted in giving the film a campy quality. Hulk was an expensive mess, and I think that movie successfully managed to bring one of Marvel's most popular creations back to the status of a "second rate hero." Things like this really make you appreciate when a comic book film is done right, because translating something with as much backstory as the X-Men is obviously a difficult feat. Yes, X2 has it's flaws -- but from the past decade, I think it's the best example of a comic book film being faithful to the source material.

It includes pretty much everything you would want to see in an X-Men movie, and manages to give you more. The action ceterpieces -- Nightcrawler's opening scene,
the Mansion's invasion by Striker's forces
and the fight between
Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike
are amazingly well-done. Even though characters like Wolverine get a lot more screen time than they need, every major characters gets a fair amount of attention and a few cool instances of them using their powers.
The lack of Cyclops in the movie is a major problem I had with this, though. Being the central figure that he is to the group, I was disappointed by his absence for the greater chunk of the film.
So yes: a good story that honors the source material, wonderful special effects, and a great ensemble cast of A-list actors. It's very rare that you get so many talented people in the same film together, especially when it's something based off of a Marvel comc.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King - I admit that I was mostly unaware of the LotR before the movies were released. I had read the Fellowship of the Ring, but never thought very highly of it, and made a very concious decision not to finish this "boring fantasy trilogy." By the time the second film rolls around I find myself becoming hooked to the series, though, and I think this third installment was the best in the saga. Aside from from the 45 minutes of epilogue, the other 3 hours manages to flow perfectly. I didn't even realize how much time had passed until I got out of the theater, and being able to say that about such a long film is quite an achievement. There's little to say about this movie that hasn't been said already, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finding Nemo / Looney Tunes: Back in Action - In my opinion Finding Nemo is an infinitely superior film to LT:BiA, but I felt the need to put both a 2D and computer generated film on my list. There was once a time when the Looney Tunes were widely regarded as the greatest figures in American animation. Sadly we are at a turning point in film animation: aside from Lilo and Stitch, no traditionally animated film has managed to compete with 3D offerings like Shrek, Finding Nemo or even Ice Age.

A lot of people argue that it's the story that will sell a movie, and not the quality of the animation. This is true to some extent, but nobody can argue that the style of animation was not a major factor in selling crap like Ice Age to audiences. The sad part is that LT:BiA had to rely heavily on computer animation throughout most of the movie, and it still earned a disappointing amount of money. I think people are just ready for something new, and they see this new animation-genre as an exciting new way to tell stories. Nobody is arguing that Toy Story or Finding Nemo are not equal, if not greater films than their traditionally animated peers, it's just the issue that nobody is going to see hand-drawn movies anymore. This really is the death of an entire genre, and I see very few studios doing anything to try and prevent it.

In either case, Finding Nemo is one of the best movies I have ever seen, and really pushes the boundaries of what an animated movie should be. Everything about it, even those terrible seagulls come across as being absolutely perfect. Even epics love-action films like Return of the King don't have the same attention to every detail that this movie does.

LT:BiA is my choice for best comedy of the year, mainly because it can appeal to all audiences. The writing for the animated characters is dead-on, and Bug's Bunny has some of the best one-liners that I have ever heard. My big complaint is with the "real actors," since they aren't nearly as interesting as the Looney Tunes are.
And Batman makes an appearance in this movie, so it's instantly cool.

The Matrix Revolutions - I disliked the Matrix, I hated Reloaded, but this came across as being an acellent movie. Somehow this chapter managed to change my perception of the whole series. Even though I enjoyed the Animatrix more, I think this is a great conclusion to the series.... yeah, I'm tired of writing now.

2. 2 Fast 2 Furious- Come on, how can you not like this one?
Very easily.

Well, because I'm such the Pessimist, I really didn't like many movies that I went and saw in theaters. So I'll do a quick lst of my top 3 (or so) then I'll spend my time tearing to shreds the top 5 I hated, if you don't mind.
----------------------------------
The Best Movies:

1.The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King

2.Elf

3.Identity
----------------------------------
The Worst Movies:

1.The Missing.
Now after seeing a preview for this movie, one might get the idea that they're going to see some creepy horror movie, that will stay with you for days. If you thought that, then you're a sucker (like me). It was the most excrutiating 2 1/2 hours I spent money on this year. Yes, I said 2 1/2 hours, 2 1/2 I will never have back, 2 1/2 hours I would have rather spent sitting on the toilet in pain, trying to pass a stool. It was predictable, boring, and never scary.

2. Dreamcatcher
Two good Stephen King movies [The Shinning and Carrie (well I guess we can throw Firestarter in there for laughs)], does not justify the crap that they keep making from his books. It's another 2 1/2 hour movie that makes you wonder, why didn't you give that $7.50 to some child in Africa so he can eat for a month. They made a good gory bathroom scene, and the entertainment stops there.

3. Haunted Mansion
Yes, I was tricked into seeing this movie. One upside is that I also dragged my two friends down with me, so I didn't have to go alone. At least it wasn't 2 1/2 hours long...

4. Jeepers Creepers 2
I'll start by saying, that I did thoroughly enjoy the first one. I thought it was a very fun movie, that did a lot better than all the rest of the horror movie made for teens.

This is the only one on my list that I didn't see in theaters, and I'm sure glad I didn't. It seems that they relied completely on style to try to make this scary. And though, you end up with a fun to watch villain, it's just not scary. Plus, the characters didn't have the sense of a dish towel. Yes, I know that's pretty common in movies like these, but still, do they really have to argue about who has a bigger penis when they're being cased by a man eating monster? I think not!

5. The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen
I really like Sean Connery, and was looking forward to having a good time watching this movie, but this movies editor needs to be repremanded. Until I saw this movie, I thought it was pretty much common practice to leave the scenes that explain the plot and add inteligence to the movie, in the movie. Now I know better, and next time I'm looking forward to a movie, I'll consider the alternative; letting some child in Africa eat for a month.
----------------------------------

Well, that's my list. I realize that many of you might disagree, and for that I do not apologize, because you can just suck it.

I always find it a little difficult to even remember all the movies I saw in the last year...or to remember what came out last year and what was the year before. But I'll do my best. ^_^;

1) Kill Bill: Volume 1

When I look at what Kill Bill actually is, I don't see much. That is, Kill Bill had an incredibly simplistic story. It was primarily an action movie with some fantastic dialogue.

But that's the beauty of it. Its action, visual style and dialogue made it an incredible experience. Although Kill Bill is in itself not particularly original (it is afterall an effective combination of very traditional movie genres and styles), it nonethless comes off as being entirely original, due to the way it puts various "classic" elements together.

I was so impressed by the dialogue, the gorgeous camera work and the stunning use of colour, that I never felt bored. I never really noticed that the story was as thin as paper, because it didn't matter. The movie was more than that. And I think it deserves a lot of credit for being able to produce that kind of experience. It's definitely the movie that affected me most this year, in general. Kill Adam being the example.

2) The Matrix: Reloaded/The Matrix: Revolutions

I feel like I've posted a billion things about this, so I'll keep it short and sweet.

I was a huge fan of The Matrix. And I loved the way that Reloaded, Revolutions and The Animatrix expanded the "Matrix Universe". They all tie into each other very cleverly and having seen them all, I can't help but come away impressed.

Yes, I felt that a few parts of Reloaded were a bit unnecessary. But what movie is perfect? Generally, the story was incredibly well told. If the dialogue had been Kill Bill quality, I'd definitely have put Matrix on top. But dialogue was spotty in the trilogy, though I think some of that was due to relatively poor acting (ie: Keanu Reeves).

Still, The Matrix Trilogy is truly a revelation in the movie industry. Its effects are still being felt and will be felt for years to come. Great stuff.

3) X-Men 2

At this juncture I must point out that there are still quite a few movies I haven't yet seen (The Last Samurai, Big Fish, LotR: RotK, etc). So I'm judging this based on a somewhat more limited scope.

I would put X-Men 2 here simply because I think it got a lot of things right that the first didn't. Maybe it was just the higher production values, or the fact that the story was slightly more serious in this second instalment. Either way, it was a lot better than the first.

I will say one thing though; Halle Berry is a poor actress. Did anyone notice that her Storm accent kept changing all the time? She doesn't know whether she's Egyptian, or British, or American, or New Zealander. Really, it's annoying. And it shows that either she didn't take the movie seriously, or she simply has very little acting skill.

4) Terminator 3

Why vote for this? Because I can't think of anything else.

All in all, T3 was less of a disappointment than I expected it to be. I think it was saved by two elements; T-X and Claire Danes.

Arnold was utterly boring in this movie -- much moreso than in Terminator and Terminator 2, I thought. Boooring.

But T-X was rather cool. And Claire Danes knows how to act; when she cries or looks frightened, it looks very realistic. She knows what she's doing. And I think she added a lot of emotion to the movie, where a lesser actress would have brought it down.

5) Finding Nemo

Eh, yeah...again, I couldn't think of what to put here. Why Finding Nemo?

Well, I only saw it on DVD...so I never watched it at the cinema.

It was generally a good film, although I kind of felt that whole "Pixar formula" while watching it...and I don't know, maybe it's getting a bit thin for me.

Don't get me wrong; Finding Nemo was a fun movie. It featured some absolutely gorgeous visuals and the characters were all pretty loveable. But I don't know...I didn't enjoy it as much as Toy Story or Shrek.

Still, it was a nice film. It's cool that they managed to render Sydney realistically, rather than, you know...putting Uluru (Ayer's Rock) right behind the Opera House, as some American movies and video games tend to do. So getting the geography right, even on a basic level, was refreshing.

Although "Wallaby Way" is still a bit suspicious...I guess they got it 95% right, in that case. ~_^
