The Oscars

The Golden Globes are over, but no one cares about those. The Oscar is apparently more important, although I usually think they're a farce as it is -- although not as bad as the Grammys. In any case, the nominees were announced this morning...

Sorry about all the caps, but I don't feel like fixing oscar.com's list. In any case, I'm kind of disappointed by the lack of Big Fish nominations on here. Hopefully The Triplets of Belleville will win something.

I think many people were dissapointed by the lack of Big Fish nominations. . I don't watch the oscars anymore. . ok, I only ever really watched it once. .

But, I think it's just to try to get some more sales up for certain DVDs. . Some people may never have heard of some of these titles, but you say it was nominated for an oscar, and suddenly heads pop up. *shrug* I don't get it. .

(ok, that's not the ONLY reason. . )

I do believe the LOTR has a very good chance this year, but I said that last year and Chicago won. V_V;

There are plenty of deserving movies and persona nominated in these categories. Johnny Depp is one of them because he just worked so well in Pirates of the Caribbean as Jack Sparrow. Keisha Castle-Hughes was brilliant in Whale rider, and I think that she is also very deserving of such accolades.

As for best picture, I have only seen Master and Commander and Lord of the Rings from the nominees list. I fell Kiwi bias showing through when I root for LOTR, but who cannot be simply awe struck by it's scale? truly a deserving flick. Academy, please don't snub it again!

Having said that, I've been pretty uninspired from the Academy's choices over the last few years. Compare it with the people's choice awards, or the MTV movie awards, and LOTR cleans up. eh, I don't see an Academy as being the be all and end all of cinemas critique thank God. Chicago sucked! I watched the Golbal Awards with my sister and some of the nominations I hadn't even heard of.
I think LOTR is looking really good this year, Peter jackson won the Golden Globe for best Director and I thought director of Cold Mountain would get it because critics have this thing against Fantasy films (Which I love the most).
Chicago sucked!
Really? I never saw it, but my sister and parents went and saw it. I for one can't stand musicals (it's a musical right) unless it's Disney, just because I grew up watching Disney.

From what I can tell, Master and Commander and LOTR seem to have the most nominations (just from skimming the list). I saw Master and Commander and thought it was great, in my oppinion it wasn't as good as LOTR just because I had to ask my dad about a few parts I didn't understand (I didn't like the ending of MAC, it left you hanging too much).

Did anyone see Lost in Translation?

I have been pining to see lost in Translation for a long time! It didn't come to a theatre near me, so I have to wait for video next week. Yes, it hits shelves next Tuesday! City of God and 21 Gram are others that I am quite curious to see. I do not like living in a place so lacking in culture that I have to drive at least an hour to see anything that doesn't grad multimillions in it's opening weekend.

On a lighter note, I am happy to see a nod to Ken Watanabe for best supporting. I thiought he was great in The Last Samaurai.

The only category which I really care about this year is Best Supporting Actor, mainly because I hope Ken Watanabe wins! His performance in the Last Samurai was captivating, and I personally think he was the big star of the film and not Tom Cruise. I was elated to find out that he had gotten a nomination!

I also hope that Lord of the Rings finally wins Best Picture, mainly because I'm an LOTR fangirl haha, but I truly think that Peter Jackon did a superb job in creating three films simultaneously, and at least one of them needs the Best Picture Award. Filmmaking is hard enough for one movie, but to do three at the same time it just incredible.

Quite frankly I was a tad surprised that Pirates got as many nominations as it did. Don't get me wrong, I loved it and I thought it was very well made, but it just didn't seem the sort of movie the Academy would really pay a lot of attention to. It's good to be wrong, though. ^_^;;

That said, I'm also a little ashamed because I haven't seen quite a few of the movies mentioned. I haven't even heard of Girl With A Pearl Earring and The House of Sand And Fog... which means I need to start hunting them down, and soon.

It'll be interesting to see how everybody does, though. I can't say I always agree with the Oscars (..or appreciate them, but that's another story), but usually it's fun to watch. And I can always throw popcorn at the screen when the actor or movie I'm rooting for doesn't win. :p

That's what happens when there really aren't too many Oscar worthy films. I don't think even one film had any sort of oscar buzz behind it until Seabiscuit came out. Most of the other nominees followed it.

Depp did an excellent job in the role, but it still seems strangely out of place with the other nominees. He's been more deserving in the past, I think.
