GBA Cartridge Troubles

A few of my friends and I all play MMBN3, and one of them recently got his 7th and final Star, after around half a year of playing. Today, when he started it up, the only option was "new game". It's happened a couple of times before, although simply blowing inside the cartridge had fixed it, but today it didn't do anything. It was nothing to do with his GBA, as we tried our games in it and it worked fine. Anyway, we tried blowing the cartridge, resetting and turning off then on again the game like we had the other times, but it was no use.

We all spent alot of time (2 hours, sometimes alot more, a day since July) on our save files, and him having his cart wiped is...Well, I don't know how to describe it. Really depressing. If I were him, I'd probably be crying my eyes out right now. Yes, we can give him all the battle chips he'd earned (we've been helping each other with the chips and PAs, so we're all at the same part) and all our spare customizer parts, but he'd still have to do around 100 hours worth of gaming on it.

Does anyone have any idea what we can do? Is there any way to get the data back? Like I said, it's happened before, but after a few resets the continue option came back, so there must be a way of getting it back this time...

We all really don't want want for him to have to start again...:bawl:

This happened to me occasionally with random NES, SNES and sometimes even N64 games. As far as I know there is no way to get the information back, heh. I'm not entirely certain as to the cause of the problem, but your information is pretty much gone for good, unfortunately. Sorry I can't be of much help =/

You cannot recover information on carts. If it is wiped, that's it. I would always try to restart the game to double check though. I've had times where nothing loads up, but once I reset the saves were all there.

In any case, there's only two reasons for this to happen on a GBA at this point:

1.) The cartridge is faulty, replace it.
2.) You're not letting the game save properly (i.e., turning the system off during a save or whatever.

I severely doubt you're doing the second one, so it has to be the first.

The other option is one I'm not sure of. I know SNES and NES games used standard watch size batteries. You could replace them and this would often fix save game troubles similar to this. I have no clue what sort of batteres GBA games use. Usually these batteries last several years minimum, so I doubt that's the problem.

Sounds like you'll most likely just have to exchange it.

Just a note; never blow inside cartridges. It will only damage them.

If you want to clean your cartridge, it's best to use a small brush to remove dust. But blowing on them is definitely not advised.

The problem could have been caused in how the cartriges where stored. The room tempreture and other things could have an effect on the cartridge (Or am I thinking CDs?). Or there are many other things that could have affected the cartridge and caused it to wipe the data. Your friend (and you, and me, and everybody else) should read the instructions manual of the gameboy or the game, it gives instructions on proper cartridge storage and handling I believe.

I'm sorry I'm not being very clear, I personally haven't touched my GBA in months (School :().

As for recovering the saved data, well It's most likely gone for good. :(

 • 3 weeks later...
I purchased Breath of Fire II on the GBA the other day (superb game I might add), but there is one problem.

The bloody thing won't save!

I've had to retsrat the game at least five times.
Whenever I quicksave or talk to the Dragon statue, turn off my GBA and return to the game later - there is no data!

Somebody help me because it is becoming a pain in my *** (metaphorically speaking...)

There was a post like this for some Mega Man game, but I can't find it.

It's one of two things.

1.) The game is busted. You can either return it or call Capcom's support number.

2.) It should be using a battery to save. Unscrew the back of the cartridge and try replacing it. It should be a pretty standard size that you could get at a place like Radio Shack.

Or it doesn't completly save. Give it an extra min. and/or try save it a second time. Oh, and if it gives you a choice like: Save and Continue, Save and Quit, or Continue, then try pressing Save and Quit.

But Semjaza Azazel's seem likely, happens to my games all the time, then agian I'm always play games.
