island gurl
Actually I have just started to learn french myself off of a French tutorial site. So far I only know a few basic phrases but i'm working on it. Your school sounds really interesting. I would like that I think. I am thinking about going on French Exchange in Year 12. Should be lots of fun.
Nut
Oh well, I am french!!! Ya I'm in Quebec, so that could explain why I'm french. English is my second language. I go to an english school, but I'm french so I can speak both without any difficulty!!
hawke3000
I live in St.John's Newfound land and almost all the schools have that program.
Megumi
Je parle francais un peu. I'm not very good though, I took two years of it in high school with a really bad teacher. I picked up as much as I could.
Terpischore
I'm currently taking french, this is my third year, only one more year to go (yesss).....i've had only one good teacher--my first year-- but it's just gone downhill from there. We're on passe compose right now and she just will NOT stray from the topic!! aaghh....ma professeur de francais est tres penible. ::sigh:: I have a friend that is going to an all french school- she says that it's really different, but she learned french quicker that way. I could never really understand why she did it in the first place...oh well....i prefer english, though...
terra
I took French throughout high school, and did a summer program where I got to spend four weeks in Paris. It was fun, though a little crazy, mostly because I took creative writing ... in French (the English class was full) and I didn't think I knew enough French at the time to actually be able to write a thing. But it wasn't as hard as I'd originally thought to write in French. Unfortunately, I was never wonderful at speaking it, which is sad. But I'm pretty good at reading it aloud, and it's kind of fun -- sounds all snobby and ... well, French.
RainbowChick
I've been taking french for four years. So ya, I can speak french. The peak of my french speaking career was when my parents dumped mw with this french family in Quebec who didn't allow any english to be spoken in the house. I can't say that was fun but it sure helped:) .
Gavin
As part of the Irish educational system I am obliged to have to learn the two national languages, Irish and English as well as one foriegn one for entry into a University. In my old secondary school the only option for a foriegn language was French so there was no choice but to learn it, I've been learning it for five years and although I can speak French in segments if I have time to prepare it I wouldn't be able to do so straight out because I'm a little rusty. In terms of difficulty I never found French to be all that difficult but I am good a languages to that did help. For school trips every two years we used to go to Paris however they stopped that so it's a pity as it would have been good practice.
Arcadia
I took French for three years in high school, and I'm pretty good at reading it and writing it, but speaking it is a whole different ball game. My accent needs some work, heh. This last summer I did this group trip abroad and France was one of the countries we visited. I actually got to stay with a French family for a few days, and that was definitely an interesting experience. We ate dinner with them, tried to communicate (we had a dictionary that we lugged around everywhere, lol), and went shopping for groceries and all that sort of stuff. The son of the family asked us the weirdest questions, too - they were just as curious as we were, so it was sort of refreshing. It was such a blast, though, cause it really immerses you into the culture. Way better than any class I ever took. :p
Circ
I too am French, but I write english fluently (much more fluently than I speak it anyway  )
We're on passe compose right now and she just will NOT stray from the topic!!
Wow... How many verb tenses have you learned? I mean, considering how the French verb system (with past versions of every verb tenses) is slightly related to the english (just slightly :D), I wouldn't expect someone to start learning the main "spoken" past tense in third year. Either that or I am missing something. (When speaking, we mostly use passé composé instead of imparfait, while litterature usualy use passé simple and imparfait.) Boo
I have French at school... (And English and German and Dutch). I'm not really good at it even though my mother teaches it at her own school. Oh well, she was bad in it aswell at first. And anything's better than german... "Vous voulez repeter s'il vous plait" (Could you please repeat what you just said?) and "Vous voulet parles lentement s'il vous plait" (Could you please talk slower?) are the only ones i need to know when in France and that way I'll keep them talking for ever gehehe. I'm Dutch so thats the reason why we have to learn French. We Dutch people can speak a lot of dialects since our language is rather accacible. (only reason how I could describe it and I dont even know if its good english heh)
Circ
"Pouvez-vous répéter s'il-vous-plait?" is slightly more appropriate and polite. On the subject some people seems more apt to learning several langiages (I myself am also learning Spanish and German). I tend to think someone needs to be able to "get out" completely from his language in order to learn a new one. We've been studying german for half a year now, and several student stil haven't caugh on the basics of pronounciation, despite the amount of conversation done in the course. Like it disapeared into thin air during the holiday... And this is a LANGUAGE program... People.
Kei
I took French both Freshman and Sophmore year. At first, I had a major problem with pronuncation and the like, but that eventually disappeared. I'm glad that I can hold a (very limited, lol) conversation, but I'm angry at myself for not taking it these past two years. Oh well. We all do something we regret one time or another. :p
Terpischore
Well, the passe compose that we've been going over would be the irregular verbs (like mettre=mis, prendre=pris) and the Dr. Mrs. Vandertrampp verbs (the ones that you need to use etre as the helping verb like devenir, revenir, venir, mourir, monter, aller, arriver, naive, sortir, descendre, rentrer, rester, retrouver, entendre, tomber, partir, passer) and stuff like maigrir=maigri and manger=mangé and vendre=vendu. and then like, "I have had" is "J'ai eu" and "I am going" is "Je suis alleé" (the one that we've been working on the most...agh...) So...yeah...third year frenchie member...yay...
Circ
Good point by Terpsichore, here. Third group verb ARE a nightmare. Many french-speaker themselves have problems with them. "I am going" is "Je vais" (Present continuous/présent de l'indicatif) "Je suis allé" is "I went" (Passé composé/Imperfect, at least in this case, imperfect often translate by the Imparfait, depending on the meaning.) G.D. Ryoko
Jai parle pas francais. I think that means I don`t speak French though I think I made a mistake. I took French in Jr. High and passed with high grades but I`m forgetting my French. I `m kind of upset about this because I love speaking French, though I need work with my accent. well Salute Mes Amies(Good Bye my friends) I think, if I didn`t make a mistake. Circ
If you don't mind...? "J'ai parlé pas français" would pretty much means "I had not spoke English" :D I think you mean "Je ne parle pas français". though we usually drop the "ne/n' " in casual speak and writing. "Salute Mes Amies" would have to be "Saluts les amis" (the possessive is not used in French here), unless you only means your female frineds, in which case you may use "amies"
Terpischore
Ah, Circéus, THANK YOU for correcting that. It irked me as well. As much as I hate french, I like showing it off to my friends. And I always correct them, if I get a chance, but usually i'm bad with what verbs mean -- we're on food now and it's just.....bah.....knowing all of the fruits and vegetables and meats and dairy products and vinegar and all that other crap is just annoying...
