Hey all, I'm starting a large art contest to start off 2004 [even though it's Feb. <_<]. The art contest I'm starting isn't just going to be 'send in a picture so we can judge them', you'll have to show that you can do more than draw cartoons and whatnot.

There will be:

Cartoons
-Fanart: Contestants must draw a cartoon character from an official drawing. You must post both the official drawing and your own drawing so the judge[s] can see how well a contestant can mimic the professional artists' style and placement. Both colored/black & white is accepted.
-Original Art: Contestants must draw an original character. Both colored/black & white is accepted.

Background
-Landscape: Contestants must draw an original landscape, such as a forest/city/fantasy world/etc. Both colored/black & white is accepted.
-Objects: Contestants must draw an origina; scene of obejcts. For example: a cluttered room, a group of random objects [like shoes or something], etc. No natural settings, including cities. Both colored/black & white is accepted.

Artistic Abilites
-Contestants must draw/create a picture/graphic design that shows distance, contrast, creative angling, perspective, color schemes, and shading. [strike]One picture will stand for one of these elements.[/strike] EDIT: Instead of drawing one picture for each element, contestants must draw/create one picture/graphic design that shows at least three of these elements. Both colored/black & white is accepted.

Realistic Drawing of People
-Contestants must draw/sketch a picture of a person that is realistic. Any picture is accepted, ranging from just a face or a quick sketch of a body. Only black & white is accepted.

Animal
-Contestants must draw an animal. Simple enough, but drawing them is even harder than people sometimes. Both color/black & white is accepted.

Impromptu
-I'll make something up to [strike]make you suffer[/strike] test your abilities. This round will most likely take place with me talking personally to people online through AIM/Chat.

I told you it wasn't a simple contest. :toothy:

Contestants can sign up now until I feel that enough time has been permitted. Questions can also be posted. Please don't ask if you can be a judge yet. Hope you have some fun with this.

I really wish I could, but I don't have a scanner. :( I have a digital camera, but that doesn't quite work the same. If my school's scanner is magically fixed before this is over, I will enter.

:Edit: I changed my mind. No matter how crappy the digital pictures may be, I'd be upset if I didn't enter this. How many rounds can we enter in? When do we post our pics?

*thinks*
Alright, I'll do it, just for the heck of it. Need something to keep me busy, and somethin' to motivate my art skills....
Also, maladjusted, perhaps you should have the rule where people have to sign their artwork. From reading the categories, I'm not sure if people are going to be allowed to draw on computers or not. The reason I'm suggesting this is because some people might have the ignorance to steal someone's hard-worked picture and claim it as their own.

Everyone must enter all of the rounds, so we can judge who the overall best artist is. ^_^. Digital quality will not be counted against you unless it somehow seriously disrupts the picture. I'm waiting a while to have people sign up before I start the contest. Thanks for joining!

Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Everyone should either sign their own artwork unless it's a graphic. Computer-drawn pictures/coloring is accepted, and if you can't sign your name properly, I'm just trusting that people will enter their own artwork. Any plagarism or direct tracing of pictures will get the contestant kicked out and probably banned. Thanks for bringing that up, Katana.

neh, are you sure this contest won't die like most of the other ones? ^ . - Guess we'll have to keep it going. Might as well join, also. Not liking the impromptu... ^ ^
I don't think it will. I hosted an art contest last year that did pretty well so I'm sure this one will do even better.

I'm curious, is there a due date for all of this to be done by?

I'd like to join, but I'm worried I won't do too well. I've never really drawn landscapes, and never drawn original animé either. Although my art is considered good, I always use an original picture as a guide, so I just recreate it, but If I tried drawing on my own... it doesn't turn out too well. I guess I'm a very technical person, but not too creative. Anyway, my point is I will join, but I might end up backing out of the contest if It proves to be too difficult for my feable artisitc abilities.

One question though; do we have to do both types within a catagory(ex: fanart/original character)? ^_^

Yes, the reason I placed 'original character' in it is because many people do not realize how much harder it actually is to create an original character since a lot of artists use already-drawn works as a basis to their own drawing.

I'm curious, is there a due date for all of this to be done by?

I've decided to end the date for signing up on Sunday. If one of you are reading this and it's Sunday and you still want to join, you'll have to PM me.

For the drawings, there will be a one week limit to turn in your art.

You're going to do this too, right maladjusted?

No, I'll be judging. I'm still deciding about the multiple judges, though.

Some people take quite long just to finish one picture, and since some of us do have school to worry about, we don't have time to finish all these in a week, so could you please extend the due date? I say two weeks at the least...

Yeah, I agree. It takes several hours to pop out anything good that's more than a simple sketch. I don't even know that I'll be able to make any of the due dates if it's all due that soon. I'm just getting into the college midterms again and I'm not going to be able to do that.

Oh God, no. I hope you're not thinking I set the limit of one week for all of these. I'd have a seizure myself if I did all of this in seven days... You have one week to finish each course in the contest. For example, in the Cartoons section, you have two weeks to finish the whole set. In fact, I might even just allow several days for some pictures to be created.

However, if I'm misunderstanding your suggestion and you can't draw one picture in one week, I might extend it if enough people ask for it. I thought one week was ample time for a picture. Here's my set list if you're interested:

Cartoons
-Fanart: Four Days.
-Original Art: One Week.

Background
-Landscape: Four Days.
-Objects: Four Days.

Artistic Abilites EDIT: Instead of drawing one picture for each element, contestants must draw/create one picture/graphic design that shows at least three of these elements. Time Limit: One Week.

Realistic Drawing of People-One Week for a quality picture. Four days for a sketch.

Animal- One Week.

Impromptu- Thirty minutes.

If a contestant does not meet the deadlines, he/she will be disqualified. I'm not going to allow excuses because you really can't tell whether someone is lying or not online. I'll probably send a PM Warning if the contestand has not posted his/her art the day prior to the deadline.

Do not start posting pictures yet, though, the contest has not officially started. If I reach a decision, I will be picking the judges. There's still a chance that it'll be solo, though.

Eh, one more question... can we use stuff we've drawn in the past? Or does it all have to be new?

I hope you don't start the contest too soon, because now my mom took the digital cam with her on vacation for a week and a half, and I don't even have that. XP

Oh, thanks for bringing that up. All pictures must be new. You cannot use old pictures, no matter how well you like them.

The contest begins on [strike]Monday,[/strike] and if you cannot find a way to submit your picture, please PM me. ^_^

[strike] EDIT: Silly me, the reconstruction of OB and the beginning of v7 will be going underway this weekend. If back up by Monday, the contest will start on Wednesay. I've saved my rules and time table in case the thread is deleted, as well as the contestants, so don't worry about signing up again.[/strike]

I'm just wondering, just yesterday I finished a fanart pic, though I wasn't thinking about the contest, I just wanted to send it in to the fanart site. Then I realized I could use it for the contest. Is it all right if I send it in to the fanart site before I send it in for the contest?
This contest failed misserably last time it started (back in late summer I think). I dunno if I wanna enter this O_O
If it does fail miserably, moderators will be here to help push it in the right direction, or end it altogether if it gets to that point. Until then, though, let's try to have an optimistic view and get on with the contest. This is directed to all comments about the questionability of this contest. ^_^
