Kato_Ama
Wow, I really like this show and it was great to see the intense discussion in this thread. I hope it hasn't really died out too much, though. I haven't had the chance to give it all much thought (I was really busy while watching the show one episode a week). Actually, I watched it with the anime club at my university and they were all hell-bent on saying it was incredibly depressing. I, however, thought it was the complete opposite. I think the show carried an uplifting message. Anyway, the couple of points I can think of right now at work: 1.
How Rakka died: Although she was falling in her dream, I don't think that's how she died. When she is sick and kind of remembering things, she talks about wanting to dissapear and thinking no one would care if she did. She also mentions feeling herself slip slowly away and her extremeties getting numb. This leads me to beleive that she slit her wrists, as that would let your blood slowly bleed out and parts of the body would become numb I would assume.
2.
The halos: Now, I never really thought about their significance until i read this thread. I'll be thinking about it more, but I'm certain that the stuff they're made of (what Rakka collects for her job) have some importance in the whole thing.
3.
Why are they there/Why are Reki and Rakka sinbound: I think that all the haibane commited suicide in some form or another (be it direct or indirect). They have to attone for this in order to become a full angel (with white wings and a real halo, maybe the halo is a symbol of their goal to do this?). Those who are sinbound cannot remember their dreams, thus they don't realize the wrong that they did by committing suicide. Until they realize that it was wrong (ie remember the dream) they are sinbound.
Those are just my rantings. What do yall think?
AzureWolf
Hey Kato! The discussion didn't really die so much as we ended up talkiing about multiples aspects of the show. When we did that, it became harder to retain focus and make a coherent post (at least for me). Doing the titles helped, but it doesn't feel like a complete post until you write on the topic of each title, heh. Anyway, if we did things one-by-one, I imagine the discussion would still have been active and more fleshed-out right now. ^^ 1. I don't really agree with your idea, if only because
the same thing happened to that one Haibane guy who tried to climb the wall. I think she just felt that way because she touched the wall, not because she was remembering how she felt when she died
. (correct me if I'm wrong, since it's been far too long since I last watched it) I still wonder if
Rakka committed suicide or just died while not having the will to live
. I'm leaning towards the latter because of the Sin-Bound ideas we've talked of before, heh. 2. Yeah, Lore's halo thing blew my mind. I never put much thought into them either until she brought it up, haha. 3. You know what's sad? I can't even remember what I thought about the whole Sin-Bound thing anymore. I have to argue, though, that
Rakka and Reki are different in that respect, as Reki comes into Gaihe (Glie?) sin-bound and Sara becomes sin-bound
. There has to be a distinction in the matter, and
Rakka remembers her dream
, so I don't think
Rakka committed suicide. Rather, she just refuses to accept the forgiveness that's already bestowed on her, and becomes sin-bound
. Bleh, it's elaborated better in one of these posts - sorry. ^^; But the
full angel and real halo
are new ideas. Quite interesting, especially if you consider how we can analyze why
they have wings that - if they do become full-fledged angels - grow while the real halo could be more ancient "shining light" version. That is, originally, the halo was merely a light that was visible all around a person's head, and only in later art does it become the more tangible circle of light surrounding a person's head. To put it simply, maybe the brilliant light one sees on the Day of Flight is that real halo
? Interesting. ^^
Kato_Ama
Interesting, yes.
On another topic, I'm certain that Rakka's job has a lot more to do with things than you guys have mentioned. Something about the glowing thingies being with the names, there's got to be a connection there. Also, what about the voice(s) in the wall, do you think they could help with its explanation? And why must she wear the robe at all times? I swear, though, every scene with her in the wall in the robe, I was absolutely sure she would take it off at some point or another and there would be this huge revelation. Guess I was wrong
:animeswea
Guest randomisation
Haibane-Renmai is a real thinker...I really like it though. Most of Yoshitoshi aBe's stuff is really good. I actually went to a panel on it at an anime convention and they sort of explained it as being a sort of, an after death place inbetween heaven and earth or thats what I got out of it anyway. What the guy who was doing the panel said was that some animes like that may be too intelligent for non-japanese people. Not to be racist, but I think it's true...I being from America have realized most shows on T.V. are reality shows or makeover shows. It's dissapointing. Back to Haibane, I think that the regular people shouldn't be so anti-haibane, they treat them like they are a lower species. It makes for a more interesting story plot though.^_^ But I also agree with The Mac Attack person, they really haven't done anything to make their lives any better. It really is a wonderful series, I would also recommend Niea_7 it's made by the same person.^_^
is this how you reply? im new to this site nd dont get it that well.... i think i agree with you about the bad tv - england is pretty awful and we dont have anywhere near as many channels as america. Of course, there's good stuff in there to. Still i think its more what you expect than you intelligence...or how much you expect to think. i watched the first four episodes of lain and they were great - i reeli want to watch Haibane Renmei but even the amazon.co.uk market place is too expensive since im broke... :animecry:
Dagger
After a long, long hiatus, I'm starting in on the middle volumes. I was amazed by how much the show picks up in the second disc. One more episode and I'll be done with the third; if I feel inspired, maybe I'll finish the whole thing tonight. I honestly don't have many comments to add at this point, although I do have a lot of vague, half-formed theories... I think I'm going to wait till I get through the final DVD, then read through all the spoilers in this thread, then add whatever I have left to add. Anyway, I'm really enjoying Haibane Renmei right now, and I'm eager to see what happens next. Listening to the Japanese version, I realized something I hadn't noticed at all before--Rakka's seiyuu also played Sora in Kaleido Star. It's interesting to hear her in a more subdued role, since Sora is so peppy and frantic. ~Dagger~
