Well. . it's been a very long wait for many people (definitely including myself), but the original Star Wars trilogy is coming to DVD soon. September 21st is the slated date for release.
From Yahoo Movies:
"Star Wars" fans will finally get the Force-feeding they've been asking for. The original three "Star Wars" films ? among the most anticipated on DVD ? will be released in the digital format Sept. 21 in North America, LucasFilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox announced Tuesday. A price for the package and international release dates were to be revealed later."
I have personally been killing my VHS tapes watching them as often as I have. Anyways, I thought I would share this information with everyone. I know that there are quite a few Star Wars freaks on these boards, and this seemed like it would be a very receptive place to put this information! lol

I don't know if I would rather wait till they come out with a 6 DVD Box set, but I have already purchased the 1st and 2nd DVD, and I don't think it would really hurt me to continue this way =) I love Star Wars too much, and money isn't that important for me to need to hold on to. . I am not picky when it comes to it!

I guess the rumor panned out. From what it was saying, they'd be released like the Indiana Jones set. One DVD for each film and a seperate DVD of extras. Should be cool.

I'm kind of scared of any new additions or changes though. "Original vision" my ***.

From everything I have been reading, I think that for the most part, it will include everything that was shown in the movie theaters (when it was re-released).
"The official definitive versions are the 1997 special editions. That's the version the artist, in this case George Lucas, intended to be seen," Jim Ward said (a Lucasfilm marketer and DVD executive producer)
I really don't have any problems with that edition. I will admit that certain scenes didn't fit, but overall, I am alright with it. Specifically, the scene in the Cantina where Han Solo is confronted by Greedo. .Greedo gets off a pot shot at Han (specially edited in). . Han Solo dodges the shot by moving his head. My problem? The un-natural motion in which he does it huants me to this day. .

Well I'm not referring to that as much as the rumors that Lucas wants to add even more scenes. Apparently Greedo shooting first will be put back in... but the rumor is that he wants to add more scenes featuring characters that only were shown off in the new movies in addition to extensions of existing scenes. There would be more of the fight between Vader and Kenobi, for example.

So I don't know what to think about that just yet.

Ahhh, I see what you are talking about, and while I am curious to see that. . too much is. . well, too much. I can live with one bad scene, I don't want there to be lots though! >_< *sighs* I just don't know about too many 'other' new scenes -_-

There is a part of me that would love to see more of a fight sequence between Darth and Obi-Wan. . but with the old style of fighting that they used (you know the one . . the, non-coreographed one), it might hurt the magic, lol

There are two courses of action that we can take here.

1) Purchase this "Ultimate" Edition of the Original Trilogy of Star Wars, which is undeniably one of the greatest Trilogies in film, and with that we get the bastardized editions of what we know and love, in addition to what sounds like a spectacular fourth DVD chock-full of behind the scenes footage from the creation of the Original Trilogy.

Or,

2) We invest in video capture equipment (really high-end stuff) and transfer our VHS tapes to a digital format, then purchase, steal, etc, the software and computer equipment to digitally remaster the Trilogy that we know to be the true Trilogy, then burn it onto a DVD collection of our own.

Regrettably, it looks like the only feasible option is #1. As much as I disliked the Re-releases, I think I can grow to ignore the minor changes. From how it sounds on various sites, only the re-releases are being...released. I think that means we're getting a total digital re-release of the re-releases, meaning no other new scenes added.

Also, they might surprise us and release the Originals as Easter Eggs in the collection...but not likely.

I'm willing to ignore the additions--to a point. I have a feeling that my opinion will change as more details are leaked.

But as it stands now, I'm more optimistic than anything. I mean, at least we're getting this, lol. From how it looked even a year ago, we were never going to get the Original Trilogy in any form, on DVD. So...yeah. Better this than nothing, I think.

Well, if we are going with option #1, then why did I waste all this money on. . . I mean, nothing *pulls doors shut behind him, closing off 'the secret original Star Wars VHS-to-DVD transfer room' from prying eyes*

I don't know my feelings if they released an original Star Wars trilogy on DVD. . For the most part, I really enjoyed the special edition features that were included, and thoroughly enjoyed having most of the footage cleaned up quite a bit. It looses a bit of it's 'rustic' feel. . but all the better in my opinion. Minus one or two annoying scenes, all the rest really added to the feel of the movie (and at the same time, a few seemed out of place just because of it's clean feel).

I am sure there are going to be rumors for a while about what else is going to be included in the movies, or even the special features disk. . however, I am just going to take it in stride. There are much bigger things I could complain about, so if G.L. says this is what he's putting out, I accept that! lol

I think that this has been far too long in the wings for most Star Wars Fans but I suppose it's just set to tie in with the release of the final instalment of the "New Trilogy" which has been a bit of a joke compared to the "Old One". Still though if I have to wait another few months more it won't kill me.

As for these new "inclusions" to the series I too would like to voice my morbid apprehension, I saw the originals in my youth and then saw the re-releases in the cinema a few years ago. It's true that additional scenes could be a good thing as long as they keep it to a set minimum and nothing too obvious. I think though only time will tell.

This is fantastic news for any Star Wars fanatic out there.

Or we could do both (Truth be told, I ended up getting the original trilogy on DVD in a much easier and far less time consuming manner that that described above) and prove we?re real Star Wars geeks?

I one of my friends has a nifty DVD/VCR that allows you to copy whatever you?re watching on tape onto a sleek by the time your done watching. I?ve done this with all three of my original trilogy movies, although their quality is a little less than par. This gradual degradation of video quality apparent in my original trilogy tapes lead to my seeking to put them on DVD.

I also did this with my collection of the Special Edition Trilogy.

I?m not sure if this is entirely legal, but frankly I don?t care.

When the original trilogy or it?s revised edition comes out on DVD, I intend to purchase it solely for the extra goodies that will doubtless be included.

You can't really expect much from a VHS to DVD conversion. Even if you had the best remastering products available (which no one does lol), you're going to hit a wall. In our situation, it won't look that good and would probably be worse than the actual tapes since most software likes artifacting the image. The only way you'd get anywhere is if you had the master tapes.

If you're really desperate, Lucasfilm put the trilogy on laser disc. Not many people have players for that, but the bootleg market has since copied them over to DVD. It looks better than a VHS to DVD transfer could ever dream of. Of course, it's the Special Editions. My friend got all three for $25 on eBay and they're not bad.

However, putting them on DVD to stop the degredation of the tapes is a good choice either way lol.
