Resident Evil 4

I don't know what sources said that anyway, other than ones that jumped the gun and made assumptions. Capcom USA once stated that the RE games would go to other platforms if they didn't do well enough on GameCube. Capcom Japan basically told them to shut up and that it wasn't true. Some magazines took that and ran with it. There have been no comments from any involved companies since then to make me think Capcom is unhappy with the sales.

The Remake and Zero GC have passed Capcom's sales expecations. I have no idea about the others, but considering they were ports of Playstation games that appeared on other systems (PC, N64 and DC), I doubt they expected much.

Also, there's a low quality video around. It's some guy taping his TV with a camcorder, but it still gives a good idea of what to expect. My favorite part is when Leon blows a hole through a door with a shot gun, a bad guy peeks through and then jumps back just so he doesn't get shot by Leon's second blast.

What is with Leon and shooting through closed and open doors in these games? lol

I don't know why, but this game seems to give the series a much 'darker' taint, in the sense that the others did have a mixture of bright and dark colour, while the screenshots shown of this one, seem to be a lot darker.

To be honest, I don't know what to expect. I've been a 'closet fan' of the series, of which I don't exactly go out and talk passionately about the games, but I do enjoy them.

The increase in A.I is making the game seem much more appealing, and not only this, but thsoe stupid cutscenes when openeing doors are gone, so the game will seem much more 'fluent'.

Just awaiting more news now I guess.

New video from Nintendo...

Large (15 MB): http://media.nintendo.com/mediaFiles/7f614905-d9ca-4996-b65e-b42c8257b30e.mov

Still looking great heh.

A new full version trailer has been released.

http://c.streamingmovies.ign.com/cube/article/514/514111/residentevil4_051004_1_wmvlow.wmv

And, courtesy of Tony, here is a high resolution version of the same trailer for those of you with broadband connections:

http://c.cubemovies.ign.com/cube/vi...04_1_qthigh.mov

It expands upon Nintendo's E3 trailer and alludes to a lot of new plot points and gameplay segments. This is probably the most amazing look I've seen of the game yet. The flame and explosion effects must be seen to be believed. The voice acting seems better than I initially expected too.

I finally finished the high resolution video download... It's actually supposed to be IGN Insider only, so take advantage of it if you can. 74 MBs and 640x480 resolution.

This is hands down the best looking game I've seen at E3 thus far, at least based on what I can actually see myself heh.

Definitely worth downloading. Gives you a very good idea of the presentation, gameplay, storyline, voice acting, sound effects and music. I was very surprised by Leon's voice. He doesn't sound as loser-ish as I remember.

So many cool things are shown in here. The gore level is definitely heightened. Direct head shots are back, finally (although you'd know that if you've seen the other videos of this heh). The AI seems great, for both enemies and friendly NPCs.

The fire is absolutely mindblowing. I don't know how else to put it. The explosions are light years beyond anything I've ever seen in a game thus far.

I just want to reaffirm that this game looks freaking amazing lol. Even if you've already seen the other videos in this thread, you should download the high-res video, no questions asked. There's some great extra stuff included on the video and definitely makes it worth the long download time. It looks damned incredible, heh.

I swear, this just might be the game that finally turns me into a Resident Evil fan, heh.

Aiiee! I just cannot wait for this game. I'm sure I'm gonna love just as much as the other Resident Evil Games. I've read about this one in my GI(Game Informer.)

The plot intrests me a bit. I also love the graphics to this game. It makes it feel much life like. More like reality.
because;
You really don't get to kill zombies, you get to kill men, women, and possibly children. They have, I think; a virus inside of them, controlling them.
I cannot wait. As I said before everything is much life like! You can shoot a guy in the foot/leg and he'll start hoppin' around. Also the
Bear traps
are a very intresting detail to add to the game.

I don't know who saw the news yet, but RE4 is no longer GameCube exclusive. It will be coming out soon for GCN, but a PS2 port is set to follow near the end of 2005. So, more or less, it's a timed exclusive.

Yet again, Capcom has removed an exclusive title from the GameCube's line-up. Viewtiful Joe is another main one, as is the upcoming Killer 7. Mikami swore up and down that the game would hit nothing other than GCN this generation, but apparently the decision was made above him on the executive level.

From a financial standpoint, I understand the reasoning. I figure it'll sell to all the GCN owners at first and when that dries up, it can be opened up to the PS2 fans. At the same time, I have to question Capcom's reasoning behind announcing the PS2 version so soon before the GCN version's release. Seems self defeating.

Who knows what'll change between the versions, if anything. I figure the PS2 version won't be quite as impressive graphically because 1.) it was built from scratch for GCN and 2.) it really isn't quite as powerful overall. We'll see though. Capcom will probably add new crap to the PS2 version, as they usually do with ports lol.

In some ways I'm really never surprised by these announcements anymore. If you look at the huge changes to the industry in recent years, stuff like this almost seems very minor.

The only thing is, it's going to be very difficult to really trust Capcom anymore. I mean, even up until recently, they've been making frequent and extremely strong denials that the game would ever appear on another platform. Given the financial considerations, you would think that they would have been aware of the sales potential six months ago or more; to continually try to reassure people that it'd be exclusive in such recent times is a bit mystifying to me.

But having said that, I don't really care about their decision. Obviously they felt it was the best thing for them to do and it's reasonable for them to want to cash in on the game as much as possible. At the very least, GameCube owners can feel satisfied that they will have the game a year earlier than PS2 owners. But PS2 owners may definitely be happy enough to have any extras that come their way, especially if the visuals are slightly worse on the port.

Interesting, most interesting.

I honestly wouldn't be the biggest fan of the Resident Evil series, something about horror in games and/or movies just doesn't make a fun experience for me. However I did rent Resident Evil for the Gamecube a few months back and it wasn't all that bad, the suspense actually made it a slightly more interesting experience. Though since the place where I could rent Gamecube games has closed down I'm pretty much left with the only option of buying them if I want to play them.

I've read a few previews for the game in different games magazines as well as seeing a clip of it on Gamezville on Sky. Personally I like the idea of not fighting off hoards of mindless zombies but rather having to face off against actual human beings, granted they try to kill you but it still adds a little to the plot. The screenshots and clips I've seen so far are very sweet and I'll be keeping an eye open for further info on the game as it appears here.

I honestly don't mind seeing the game going to other consoles, why should Nintendo fans be the only people to enjoy the game, even if the Gamecube is floundering in Europe. Actually I retract that statement, considering at least here the Gamecube needs every bit of help it can get against the X-Box and PS2.

Unless I'm sorely mistaken and I've screwed up my dates, Resident Evil 4 is on track for release in less than a month. And the last post was made something like 2 months ago, don't let it slip away people, we want to keep the discussion alive. Seen any new movies, any new screenshots? TELL US! I, for one, am starving for new RE4 media and haven't seen anything new on the game in about a month.

Perhaps this is why the thread is dying, no new info and media = no more discussion. Can't anyone at least try and photoshop some pics of Chris and Jill into the game, then we can blast them after they make the discovery and we point out that those are from a cutscene on the Cube version of RE.

Well enough of my rambling,
We should all know by now that Ada Wong is in the game, for what purpose nobody really knows, but it looks like shes kicks a fair amount of *** and saves Leon and Luis(that right?) a few times.
We should have all seen a couple of the new locales, that weird canyon village thing interconnected with bridges and ramps and stuff. If it weren't for my 56k I'd know a hell of a lot more by now and I'd be able to discuss further, but alas, I don't.

REVEL IN THE GORE PEOPLE!!! I HAVE AN ITCHING THAT NOTHING BUT SOME GOOD VIOLENCE CAN SCRATCH!!!

It was released about a month ago and is essentially the demo that was playable at E3. Although it's not long (it lasts roughly ten minutes or so) there is some fun to be had; it's all action and the control scheme suits it well. There are some minor clipping issues apparent in the demo (I was able to walk through a tree) but it's polished considering.

Otherwise, there are old introduction movies and trailers from old Resident Evil titles but it's obvious that the Resident Evil 4 demos (there's a video trailer as well) are the real attractions on the disc. This is old news and I'd be surprised if gamers here were unaware of it. Check it out.

Also, some new screens were released from a yet-to-be-seen trailer. I'll post the links instead of direct images just in case anyone is afraid of potential spoilers.

Thankyou Charles. Something for me to theorise about. But whatever, that comes later. I've never seen an EB or Gamestop in my life, I live in Australia and I'm pretty sure that the demo isn't anywhere to be found over here, and I won't get the game until after March. This is why I need some kind of discussion...

Those pics are pretty awesome, That
army guy looks like he could be Leon's superior officer
, subplots ahoy! I'm guessing perhaps
he was behind Ashley's abduction,
or something along those B-Grade lines. I suppose he's part of that creepy cult(those weird monks) and is part of a giant conspiracy to make genetic superweapons to conquer the world, assuming Capcom tread the traditional RE path.

And sorry about the spoiler thingy in my last post, completely slipped my mind. See, I was careful this time.

I'm not sure where you live in Australia, but there are EBs all over this country. There are no less than three near my own suburb in south east Melbourne.

But perhaps they're only near the major cities, I don't know. Game stores like Video Games Heaven should also have the demo (though I haven't checked, personally).

Well James, I live in a lovely little state called Tasmania, in a relatively small town called Scottsdale. To my knowledge there's no Electronics Boutiques in my state so yeah... I guess I could try ordering crap, but whatever.

So James, can you get the RE4 disc in Australia or what? I'm a bit in the dark nowadays.

EDIT: Who cares anymore? IGN seemingly answered my prayers and updated with some new boss and level info(AND SCREENS!). You can find the article right here. Spoilers, so beware.

OK, so the new boss is
Garrador, his eyes have been stitched shut and massive claws have been strapped to his arms. I assume he's located in the castle dungeons, the only appropriate place for freaks of this nature. IGN say he has heightened hearing abilities, so I hope Capcom does the cool thing and make it so that if you make noise, he attacks in your direction.
And the new level is the
Castle, right after the village emptie out Leon follows a path out and to a castle in the distance. The castle is complete with traps, most you've probably seen in videos, but there's the new razorblade pendulums ^_^. And you can use vehicles within the castle(assuming you'd call a minecart a vehicle).
Quite cool, really. This seems more and more like Eternal Darkness crossed with Rambo(to me, at least). I mean, Leon can run and jump out windows and snipe from towers and get caught in bear traps and etc etc, but there's all the creepy atmosphere which made me crap my pants while playing Eternal Darkness. Awesome...

EDIT TWO : As I opened up IGN's frontpage today a shudder went down my spine, the day I've been waiting for for over a year. Click here please. I'm in the process of reading so I'll pick out some choice quotes as I go along.

"Simply put, this game not only delivers on the hype, it exceeds it. You will be wowed. You will be terrified. And when it's all over, you'll wonder why Capcom didn't do this sooner."

"Rated M for a reason: extreme violence and gore"

"There are no pre-rendered sequences in Resident Evil 4, but you wouldn't know it when watching the opening cinematic."

"After some consideration, and much more play time, we came to realize the reason for this: more than any other entry in this series, this is true survival horror."

"Armed only with a flashlight, the nearly helpless girl must slink by robed enemies and rapidly raise and lower gateways before her attackers can catch her. Playing through levels like these, it's impossible not to notice just how far Capcom has come, and why it continues to lead the way when it comes to survival horror."

That's just from the first page, though. Why the hell are you still here!? GO READ IT!!! I am... March... Why so damn long?

EDIT THREE : It's official, Resident Evil 4 kicks some major ***, the *** of what, I don't know. I just checked in on GameStats and the official press verdict so far is 9.9 out of 10(IGN=9.8/10, GameSpy=5/5, GMR=10/10). So far there's no official GS score or a reader's score, but judging by events thus far, it's gonna be good.

Too bad we can't double post sometimes. I wonder how many people saw your edits so far? heh

Anyway, Gamespot wound up giving it a 9.6. The guy gushed over pretty much everything, the only sore spot seemed to be that he wasn't too big on the limited inventory system and going into menus to use items.

Comes out tomorrow... although most retail places are getting it Thursday. Mine should be at my place sometime on Wednesday. Can't wait.

It definitely looks like this is a case of a game really living up to (and exceeding) the hype. Considering the gushing that many in the media have done over the game so far, it's pleasing to see that they haven't hyped it too far.

I'm incredibly pleased by what I've read about this game. I'm not sure when the Australian release date is, but I'm definitely picking this game up as soon as possible.

Oh wow, looks like I should be gushing over this game too. I was always skeptical of whether or not it would live up tpo its hype, but I guess it will then. Thats a ridiculoussly high score, thats what Halo2 received I think. Wow, this spurs my interest for this game.

It's too bad they didn't fix the clipping issues found in the demo version. These flaws don't impact the game in an overtly negative way but the ability to walk through trees does conflict with how highly polished nearly everything else turned out to be. The communication scenes, very similar to the Metal Gear codec conversations in terms of presentation, took me by surprise too. They're not terrible, but they do break up the pacing in the opening scenes compared to the demo version. Thankfully, they're sparse and kept short. Not being able to reload on the status screen is a shocking inconvenience but it adds realism and desperation of he situation. My only other complaint at this time is that
the explosives the villagers throw do zero damage to Leon more often than not. After experiencing this flaw several times, I situated Leon almost directly on top of an explosive, and although his assailants felt the impact, he was left unscathed.
These are only minor gripes however, and on the bright side, several improvements were visible over the demo including more targeting points, more animation, more audio, and female villagers. In short, a lot more visual variety.

I refrained from reading spoilers and viewing new media of the game for quite a while now with the exception of the pictures I posted not too long ago (I haven't even read an updated preview in months) so I'm enjoying the experience quite a bit. Nearly everything is a surprise--not only in terms of storyline but I had also forgotten how many minor details there were, such as shooting enemies through wooden doors. On that note, enemy reactions to gunfire are extremely satisfying. They lend impact to individual methods of dispatching foes. The realism apparent when taking out an enemy's knees and then nailing a head shot is extremely satisfying. It gives substance to the action--makes the violence unfolding on screen feel significant. Sometimes appalling.

My favorite aspect by far though is the hectic pacing. The feeling of desperation is just that much greater thanks to it. Facing intelligent enemies who consciously seem to despise you, while devising ways to plot your demise makes the situation not only seem more violent--but more despicable as well. There's a clear difference between a handful of brainless zombies lumbering instinctively after you and a massive horde of killers dodging, weaving, and communicating in their pursuit. It all comes off extremely well. I've had these people jump off bridges into water after me, and follow me into different rooms. Quite a change over the docile zombies. The plot explanation behind them only makes everything better.

Of course the visuals are astounding. The particle effects are especially impressive (i.e., blood, dirt, rain). Also, the explosion and flame effects probably surpass Metal Gear Solid 3's, which is no minor feat. I won't ramble on about the visuals at length though because I don't have enough time at the moment and there's really no point; I would just be reiterating what current reviews have stated. Although I should mention some scenes seem to have a soft blur technique to accompany foggy landscapes that I'm not too fond of and the frame rate drops just the slightest bit. The repetitive use of enemy models is obvious too (you fight the same man's character model who initially attacks you with an axe, over and over again). Otherwise the visuals extremely nice as expected; the variety of the environments far surpasses any other Resident Evil title. You're constantly moving somewhere new--and the locales are all hauntingly beautiful. Just wait until you see the night sky illuminated by lightning while torches burn around you.

The gameplay is really where it's at that though. The Ninja Gaiden inspired merchant is out of place, but even he offers a welcome twist to the old formula of acquiring weapons. It makes the game feel more action-oriented--and when you're going for action, borrowing elements from Ninja Gaiden isn't a bad idea by any means. Once Ashley is acquired the pairing works surprisingly well too. She'll even verbally assist you by telling you to shoot explosive barrels. So, all of these seemingly out-of-place, borrowed gameplay elements seem to mesh well in the context of Resident Evil 4 and keep things fresh. You're never given the chance to become comfortable.

Oh, and I can hardly wait to see what the unlockables are. Supposedly they're excellent.

I've not really noticed walking through trees or anything to that effect simply because there's very little reason to even be near enough to a tree for it to happen. I do notice the window jump clipping, which happens so quickly I couldn't really be pulled out of the game at all. You'd think that would be addressed since the windows are mostly small... Oh well.

I don't mind the wandering merchant (an idea around long before Ninja Gaiden, lol). While him being in places randomly is certainly different from past titles in the series, that's what I like about him. I've ran into a rocket launcher out in the open, so perhaps not everything has to be purchased. At the same time, it adds a sense of planning that I enjoy. Money is plentiful, but you still don't easily get enough to buy every last weapon... especially when you also have the option to upgrade them. It becomes a question of which is better, upgrading or buying new things, especially when you only have a limited amount of space. Plus his target practice game is fun.

I will admit the use of the same few models can get irritating. However, I don't find it to the point of games like KotOR, where super important characters look exactly the same as five other people in his general vicinity. When you consider that there are times when there are literally a dozen villagers (or whatever) on-screen at once, I guess it's more forgivable. This is definitely going to be more of a problem as games get more and more realistic looking... Spending time to make tons of individual enemies seems tedious lol.

Anyway, I'm really loving the game so far. Despite very, very minor issues (and really, you have to search for these so you have something to fault it for), it is better than I expected and absolutely slaughters every other game in the series in really every last respect. The characters' voice-overs are actually decent unlike most of the REs and their actions seem mostly natural. While control is mostly the same, the over the shoulder perspective the game uses fits it perfectly. I have not had a single control-related problem at all.

Everything else just comes together. The story is actually interesting, particularly due to characters. I think some of the dialogue is a bit strange at times, but overall it's fine. The game looks great. It has some blurry textures and I've noticed very slight slowdown in some places (well, just one place, where dirt is blowing around in gusts -- more impressive stuff runs fine, strangely), but it's still amazing. Animation is great, small details are impressive and the models are fantastic. Music is mostly background/atmospheric, but very fitting and very well-done. It's well cued too, as I've noticed slightly different music depending on whether or not enemies are nearby and what type they are.

I think what makes RE what it is, however, is gore and scary stuff... and this game really has a lot of it. Headshots are very present in this game (removed in a few of the titles, for some reason) and weapons are very powerful. What's great about them is that while the weapons are strong and hit enemies with big impacts, they often react as though it didn't do much to hurt them. It makes them seem nearly invincible, rather than making you feel like your weapons suck. Seems to be a problem in a lot of games.

The scary stuff is well used, in different ways. There's stuff that's just creepy or disgusting (the later effects of the virus are pretty nasty the first time you see them, as well as surprising). So many times I think I'm fighting off the last enemy and a few are behind me, ready to attack. This is made stronger because the enemy AI is strong. They flank you, come through windows, throw things from a distance, climb ladders, etc.

I think what really helps this game is that, unlike most of the other things in the series, things aren't set up for you. Other RE games had methods that generally made me get ready for sudden changes or new enemies. This one doesn't do that as often, things just happen.
I didn't expect that weird creature to explode out of the neck of a guy whose head I just blew away with a shotgun... and as time goes on, the things evolve into different forms
. Plus, some of the bosses are surprising and pretty disgusting/freaky.

Anyway, great game.

Most definitely. RE4 absolutely mauls the other RE games, as far as I'm concerned. Getting rid of the more static camera angles in form of a more ballistic system helps out a lot. As freaky as it sounds, I'm actually enjoying the control scheme of a Resident Evil game. I'm expecting hell to freeze over at any moment.

I've run into a couple of clipping issues, but they're not so bad, overall. A villagers pitchfork went right through a door, without any impact, or anything, for example. Maybe slightly annoying, but not nearly enough to put a huge damper on my enjoyment of the game.

I love how unrelentingly gory it is. Make no bones about it, RE4 definitely earns its M rating. A good head shot can cause a villager's skull to explode into bloody, fractured pieces and sometimes you'll see a nice fountain of blood shoot up out of the bodies when you kick the heads off of villagers. The game's not for the weak of heart, at all lol.

The graphics, as expected, are astounding. It's one thing to watch videos of the game online, and it's quite another to see it in motion on your television. The level of detail is very nice, and I love the bleakness of the graphics. It just fits the overall theme of the game so well.

I'm not actually that far into the game as of yet, so I know that I'll have more to say on it as I progress. I do know that if you own a GameCube, you need this in your life. Need it.

Ahhh, another game to finally rival doom3. I guess it wasnt that gory when you were killing people, but all the walls were covered in blood and things bleed pretty profusely in that game. I like it, it just wouldnt be the same without the graphics.

I've actually gotten pretty far into the game, and it is consistently cool. It took me a couple of times to get through the first big section of the game, mostly getting the hang of things. I really wanted to go into the buildings and use them as a defense position but I really found that the villiagers are much more dangerous in the houses compared to outside.
When you get Rebecca the game really changes a lot. She is a pretty big liabilty especially if she gets hurt because she soaks up your healing items which are in pretty short supply. When the goons grab her its actually pretty easy to protect her, but you really can't leave her too far away
I've gotten pretty far, not without my own fair share of death. I've gotten as far as the weapons upgrade, got the riot gun and the magnum which I haven't tried out yet but am reaally excited to explode some heads. I got rid of the rifle because I never used it much, but as soon as I got to the castle I really wish i had it back.
