I found out that they are coming out with a Yu-gi-oh movie on August 13th of this year. I am not sure the plot of this one, or who al will be in it other than Yugi, Joey, and Tea. I was wondering if you guys have heard anything about the movie and what you guys think about it. Plus, do you personaly think it will be as big as the Pokemon movies were?

I don't know if this is the same movie we're talking about, but I saw a Yugioh movie.

It wasn't exactly the greatest cinematic event I've witnessed.

Anyways, it's about Yugi & Co. and it also introduces a new character. Supposedly, he's an extremely weak player, and he pretty much has a crappy deck. Low and Behold, he gets ahold of the 'Red Eyed Black Dragon' or something which is supposed to be not powerful, but full of potential...? Yeah. I don't think it'll be as 'big' as the Pokemon movie, because I think the Yugioh fad has died done a bit.

Maladjusted's pretty much got it down, unless it's a new one being made. There was talk of a live-action one, but I hope nothing comes of that.

The only Yu-Gi-Oh movie I know about is a rather badly animated half-hour long special in which
Yugi uses his Red-Eyes to form the Meteor Black Dragon in a competition.
I don't know much more than that, but as I gather it bears little relevance to the current story arc, save for the fact that Yugi has the Red-Eyes. Lelola did have screenshots from it up on her site if you want to take a look at the animation quality.

I doubt it'll ever be as big as the Pokemon movies- Pokemon had huge amounts of hype and merchandising everywhere, so it was hard to escape pretty much wherever you went. Seeing as that was the first anime that really made it big in the West, everything else pales in comparison in terms of its following.

Well, there are 2 movies in the works...the "movie" that exists currently is actually generally termed the "Shounen Jump Episode", as it takes more after the manga the the series. You can tell by the cards and art, really.

Anyway, the other 2. One, unfortunately, is live action...the other is being made by TV Tokyo, and hasn't been released as of yet. Not much has been confirmed about either; cast lists for the live action have all been guesses- particularly what fans are dreading- and the TV Tokyo one we probably won't hear about for a little while yet.

Fortuantely, there's said to be promos being given out during the first week or so of the showing of whichever one arrives first (which, I hope, will be TV Tokyo's)...hopefully good ones.

I wish I could see that movie, however I don't live in the U.S.A or Japan, so I doubt I'll ever see it unless by some strange reason of a miracle happens and I move... :P

A live action movie sounds like a really bad idea, and it seems to me in my personal opinion that a live action movie would be like a smack in the face to Kazuki Takahashi. I think the man should have a final say-so on the matter and if he did he should reconsider because a live action movie could actually hurt more than help more.. But if a live action movie is definetly in the works then there will be one of the two effects that follow.

-The movie will be a blockbuster hit with the younger audiences and some hardcore fans.

OR

-The movie totally belly flops and leaves hardcore fans rather angry and disappointed with the film producing company.

Now if the second effect happens that can cause a big chunk of money to go down the drain and the movie will not make very much money. This was the case with the CGI Final Fantasy movie, I went to see it and thought the graphics were beautiful etc. Except the problem was the movie was no where near being worthy of bearing the title Final Fantasy. There wasn't a single bit of FF in that movie. And that's what may worry me with this live action Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, is that whoever gets the rights to make the movie live action may screw it up horribly. But who knows I could be proved wrong.

The thirty minutes episode you guys are refrencing is not the movie I am refering to. The movie is coming out in America the 13th as I have said earlier, and it is a full-length one, not a half-hour special. But I also disagree with y'all saying the fad is dying out. They keep coming out with games left and right and is just beginning in America. In fact, they nearly have more games than the Pokemon does.
That would be cool if they did come out with the Yu-Gi-Oh movie, hope to see new monsters and stuff like that on there as well.

Mage15, did you by any chance read what I said about BlackRose's reply? Those same remarks apply to your post. She's a new member, and therefore may not be familiar with our rules. You, however, have absolutely no excuse for spamming this thread. Please don't do it again.

I hadn't heard anything about a full-length animated film. Hopefully it won't be as heavily edited as the US dub when it finally gets here, whatever its relation to the series.

As for the fad- no-one said it was dying out, it's just dying down. And I'd agree with that too- just because more merchandise is being released doesn't necessarily mean it's becoming more popular as such. It just means there's more stuff being made. Five booster sets have been discontinued in the US already, and people tend to be talking about it less *shrugs* The latest episodes have lost their novelty value for me, so even though I still watch it it doesn't interest me quite as much as it used to. The film would be something to see though, if it's decent.

I went looking for info on the movie a while back, but I couldn't find much. The only info I managed to get was that the movie deals with Yugi and Slipher the Sky Dragon. But even that piece of info doesn't say much. Apparently the producers are keeping quiet about the movie at the moment.

I doubt the movie will be as big as it was with Pokemon, but probably not that far behind it. I mean heck, Pokemon's been here for about how long now? About 6 years? And in those six years alone they got 5 movies and counting and the series is still popular from what I can tell.

Even though I'm a big Yu-gi-oh! fan, I really don't know if this "Live-action" movie will be such a hit, I personally think it depends on the storyline and the actors, first of all, then, if Yu-gi-oh's popularity is fading, what I mean with this is that maybe, some of the people that were total hard core-fans, and that are now a little less interested maybe wont want to see the movie if they don't like the storyline, etc...Like a friend of mine, that doesn't like the idea of a live action movie..
A live action movie sounds like a really bad idea, and it seems to me in my personal opinion that a live action movie would be like a smack in the face to Kazuki Takahashi.
And this could or will be, like Domon said, a smack in the face to Kazuki Takahashi, and could do serious damage to Yu-gi-oh's popularity and rating, and could leave many people dissapointed and/or frustrated... :(
The movie will be a blockbuster hit with the younger audiences and some hardcore fans.
Or it could be a total and complete hit, and maybe win an Oscar or two...
It really depends on many factors...
But in my opinion, bad, a very bad idea  :flaming:

I totally agree with Solo Terminate here, the fad is not dead, it's just not as alive as it was one or maybe 2 years ago. I also think that more merchandise doesn't necesarily mean more fame, fans and/or fad, just that there's more stuff related to Yu-gi-oh!..and the dying out of the fad could have serious concecuenses conserning the movie...The two are really intertwined..
This is what I think, which isn't necesarily what other people should think...

4Kids Entertainment has announced that there will be a Yu-gi-oh movie that will be released on August 13, 2004. The story takes place after the Battle City Tournament. In Egypt, Anubis has awakened. He was defeated be Yami a long time ago and has returned for revenge with the Eighth Millennium item. Here's a press release that 4kids put on the internet: http://www.4kidsentertainment.com/docs/news/2004-0309.pdf

You MUST have Acrobat Reader to see the press release.
What do you think about the movie, and will you go and see it in the theaters?

Ugh...

I spent a half hour with this stupid keyboard with a malfunctioning S key typing something and it got deleted. Stupid errors.

=_=

This Yu-Gi-Oh! movie is an abomination. It is a corporate cashcow created by 4Kids Entertainment to milk the rewards of Kazuki Takahashi's piece of art without thought or care to the original form. The plot is unthinkable and the concept laughable. The American Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie is a slap in the face of Kazuki Takahashi and LOYAL fans of the series.

4Kids Entertainment Incorperated created this whole concept with the goal of making as much as possible, at all costs. The press release itself almost proves it itself.
This press release contains forward-looking statements. Due to the fact that 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., faces competition from toy companies, television networks, motion picture studios and other licensing companies, and the uncertainty of public response to the Company's properties, actual results or outcomes may differ materially from any such forward-looking statements.
4Kids feals pressure from other Companies in the United States and is taking the Yu-Gi-Oh! series big screen as a venture to stay competitive. Any other thoughts, like ruining the story, warping an original concept around for a capalitic notion, are out of mind.

This movie, takes characters from Kazuki Takahashi's original series and puts them in a movie with a theme so familiar and western, the series would be all but ruined.
In YU-GI-OH!: The Movie, after the conclusion of the Battle City Tournament, deep below the sands of Egypt, an ancient evil has awakened. Anubis, who was defeated centuries ago by Yugi?s mysterious alter ego ? the ancient Pharaoh ? has returned for revenge. Wielding the power of the Eighth Millennium Item, Anubis is determined to destroy Yugi and take over the world!
The concept is so out of whack with the original series that any true Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan could not fail to note the holes this movie puts in the story and destruction it brings from within.
Eight Millennium Item? Not. Possible. Can be discussed in future reference if requested.
Returned for revenge? Take over the world? Would you like me to call Kim Possible? I'm sure she's had enough experience with the vengeful-villain-who-wants-to-take-over-the-world type.
This outrageous movie will spread, and already is, a pure wave of repulse among true Yu-Gi-Oh! fans and is worthy only for the intended audience of Soccer Moms and 8 Year Olds they dumbed the series down for. After Kazuki Takahashi spent years of work on a manga and card game that people loathe, love and learn from (like all pieces of art) 4Kids is tearing the work down for every penny, every dollar that can be sucked out of it as the American franchise it has become. The movie will be released in the United States first, and for that I am glad. If this movie were to be shown to the fanbase in Japan that has followed the series since its infancy to Atem-sama's wicked-*** goodbye, I would expect little more than  :flaming:  :D :ball:  :fart:  what I, and all those opposed to this movie feel.

If this movie will become a success, 4Kids can be sure to thank those Soccer Moms and 8 year olds that go for the free cards because the true Yu-Gi-Oh fans, the ones the series was originally intended for, will only be able to wonder what went wrong.

Okay, guy, take deep, soothing breath.

Now, what I'm about to say might disqualify me as a "loyal" Yu-Gi-Oh fan, but reality must intervene at some point.

Now, why do you think Takashi-san wrote Yu-Gi-Oh, the original manga? Yes, it was his artistic vision, but a little motivation called "employment" was probably a factor. Why did he allow two anime series to be created based on it? Why did he allow the creation of an actual card game? Yen, baby.

You act as if Takashi-san is being tied down and forced to watch as his characters are "Americanized". The word of the day is "residuals". He is recieving money from this film, just as 4Kids is. You act as though Konami recieves no money in Japan for YGO, and only the American companies are trying to turn a profit.

Here's an idea: As Konami if they'd produce YGO materials for free. Ask Takashi-san if he would.

Also, to say that the plot is 'laughable' based on what little information is cited is pretty weak. Someone with a Millenium Item trying to take over the world? Right, never seen that in the original manga. Revenge? Nope. Right Millenium Item? Sure, like there were only four Saiya-jin left...except for Tree of Might.....

I have no plans to see this film, but I hope it does well, and I hope 4Kids makes a lot of money off of it. This, in turn, will result in Konami and Takashi-san making a lot of money, and thus creating more of a product I enjoy. It's called economics.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

The fact is, is that like how DB/Z/GT was dubbed, the great manga that Yuugiou is, is being turned into some "Pokemon-like" piece of dirt to fit the commercial aspects to target it towards pre-teens and whoever.

Sure it is. I don't like it, but 4Kids obviously felt that making these changes would result in greater profits. Takashi-san and Konami obviously felt the same way, because they allowed 4Kids to do it. The profits being earned by UDE, Konami America and 4Kids are also going to the Japanese productions, giving them further incentive to create the product. $$ in America = $$ in Japan = More Yu-Gi-Oh. I can handle that, especially when there are also avenues where I can find the original product.

DeathBug you pretty much proved my point.

I don't know where you're from or what you do but you might as well be a conglomorate corporation. Are you a loyal Yu-Gi-Oh! fan? I wouldn't know. I don't know you. But from your post you seem to be more inclined to be in favour of making money than making or protecting anime. That and "Takashi".

Why did Takahashi write the Yu-Gi-Oh original manga? Why do ANY manga artists become manga artists? Because that's what they are, artists. Do they sell their work? YES. Does that make any of their work any less valuable emotionally to them? NO. If you've actually taken the time to create something, even if it wasn't for yourself, you will feel pretty attached to it and proud if it has matured into something that you can be proud of. A series practically a decade in the making especially.

Yes, Takahashi is probably getting more money from the American Franchise. Yes, the Japanese companies are probably earning profits also. Takahashi might not watch his characters becoming "Americanized" but when you know someone is destroying something you created, something you poured your heart into, it's kind of hard to ignore. And if you say he did not work hard or care about his manga, you have not seen his more recent volumes.

Takahashi will be earning money. But what is this? Money over matter? Why must money be the object that destroys everything? It destroys lives, people, why must it now take over Anime? If your rebuttal will resemble anything near "Money is the world baby," then I must ask, why do the Japanese Companies need not destroy the series?

Why must the American Companies that kill everything when the Japanese are obviously creating a success from the phenomenon. Is it the Japanese are better at making money? Or maybe they hold a priority over artistic and original work over a profit. No, few people will make things for free. There are not many people who like being a starving artist. But if the Japanese Companies don't have to change anything, why must the Americans?

If they don't like something, don't change it. If they wont make money from that, DON'T BUY INTO IT. Especially don't buy into something if you're going to just change it into another american stereotypical cartoon. The plot of this 'anime' is laughable. Has it been done in Yu-Gi-Oh! before? No. Has it been done before? YES. Revenge? Taking over the world? Please. If I can't go to a blockbuster and pull 10 movies off the new releases or cartoon shelves I will eat my hat. Hey I have an idea, let's compare this plot with American Comics!

Revenge?
The Joker fell in a vat of acid and came back for revenge.
The Riddler was fired by Wayne Enterprises. Came back for revenge.
Posion Ivy's lab was *something* by Wayne Enterprises. Came back for revenge.
The Penguin was raised by birds. :drunk:
On to Spiderman.
The Green Goblin lost his company's project to another company. Came back for revenge.
The Green Goblin was killed by Spiderman. His son came back for revenge.

And that' s just from two comics... OH! And Taking over the world??? That is a joke. No, really, it's a running gag on Kim Possible that takes advantage of that age old stereotype that villains want to "TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" If the s*itload of villains in that series aren't enough to show how corny that topic is, we could always ask Mojo Jojo from the Powerpuff girls to help us with examples. -_-

The point is, that theme is worn out. Do we know much about the plot? No, I'll give you that, but what more do we need to know? I'll keep an open mind and watch the movie, but I can not lie about what is truth. The American corporation changed an original and fun manga concept, a boy playing games with a dark spirit inside of him, to another stereotypical sell-out. Does money run the world? Maybe. That would mean that it's money that is destroying this work that so many have loved for years. That's enough to make a fuss about.

-ArV
I've almost given up trying to deny that I'll like something when it comes to anime, because more often than not I'll end up liking it anyway.

The Yu-Gi-Oh series is on the verge of boring me now, even in the midst of the Yugi vs Kaiba semi-finals. If this Yu-Gi-Oh alternate storyline/spin-off/animated generic fanfic made by 4Kids is going to be worse than that then I'd be tempted to give it a miss.

But you never know. I'll watch it anyway, simply because it is Yu-Gi-Oh, but whether it's any good or not will depend on the writers, and no-one can actually say how good or bad it will be until they've seen it. Writers who are writing for money will probably do a fairly bad job and will do whatever they can to get it past the final draft, but more often than not people do their jobs because they like what they do and put care and attention into it, and the better shows display that in their quality and popularity. I think it's an unfair generalisation to say that everyone else is too mercenary to make anything else good.

I'm not denying that it could be bad. I just don't know yet.

The Big Five screw with Seto for...

Revenge is hardly an American concept. I can think of a dozen different anime shows where a factor in the character's behavior is revenge.

And taking over the world? Can we ask Yami Bakura, both Mariks, or Gozoboro Kaiba about that?

And I would tell you that if you are opposed to the movie, vote with your wallet and don't go. I don't plan to simply because I think it will be shallow and uninteresting.

But, the fact remains, I want YGO projects to make money, even if I don't like all of them. (I, for instance, have no desire to own a YGO beach towel.) That will ensure that the story and game that I do enjoy keeps coming out.

DeathBug you've convinced me to stop. No more ragging on the movie.

The movie may be a flaw, the movie may be great, the whole reason I was ranting and raving was because 4Kids changes the original product. You don't like it, I don't like it, but the fact is if they change it to make money. There goal is to make money, but with more money comes more Yu-Gi-Oh!

Though the quality of the product... I tend to feel cheated. I feel I want the original anime like t he creator wanted it. A sacrafice we have to make I guess.

I was originally against bring the series to the American shores. If they hadn't, there wouldn't be enough people in the school who actually knew what a Black Magician is (heck I wonder how many do now). Though I'd probably still be playing the game...

I have a few things I must reply to your post though... Call me Anal Retentive.
Takashi-san is still the owner of the property.
It's Takahashi. With a ha.
Again, how can the Japanese companies change the product they release?
My point was that the Japanese Television and Movie Makers often kept to the original story without changing things for money as often as American Companies do. Although this is definately up for debate, especially among those who compare manga with anime. (This is why I don't debate anymore. -_- I find flaws in myself.)
And taking over the world? Can we ask Yami Bakura, both Mariks, or Gozoboro Kaiba about that?
I didn't mean to say that the very common theme of revenge and "Taking over the world bwahaha~" is not found in anime. The list of western examples of such were in reply to your phrase saying... we've never seen the themes of revenge or 'taking over the world with a millenium item' in your previous post.

But I digress, I'm not here to continue a now stale argument. -_- I tire quickly.
I'm not denying that it could be bad. I just don't know yet.
Solo-san is correct in saying, I cannot judge the movie until I see it. For now, I find a better use of my time.

Oh boy....
Frankly I could care less if a movie came out. YGO is one of the most popular CHILDREN'S show out there at the moment, just like Pokemon and Digimon were. It's only about time they make a movie for it. Whether or not it does good or not will be decided when it comes out.

I don't think the plot's that bad. It seems kinda interesting tbh. ^^

But will I go see it? Not while it's in theaters no siree!!!! I'll wait till it comes out on video, so I won't be caught in the theater going crazy over Seto-kun. XD Plus, I'd be way embarrassed. But I'll see it eventually! Don't you fret! XD XD

Oh Gee...

This is exactly why I didn't want the series to become a dubbed show.

Yes, the 4Kids version is for CHILDREN.

Was the original? NO! The show revolved around a boy with dark powers who would do malicious things to evil people who lost at his game of darkness. The second series is a bit more tame but still aimed towards 14+ audience. THE DAMN DUBBIES RUINED THE SERIES. RUINED THE ********** *goes on rampage*

And the movie.. argh.. -_- *must.. wait.. towatch...before...complaining*

Yargh... -- ya know most anime is aimed at children in the first place. Even Evangelion was (but then it got so screwed up as the series went on that parents began complaining).

Actually I shouldn't say children. I should says ages 10 to 13. That's where most anime is aimed at.

YGO is aimed at that category, well, more of 10 to 14. So maybe children's wasn't the best word....

Now the MANGA. THAT was aimed at a much higher age group, defiantely. In fact mostly all manga are. Like here in America, comics from Marvela nd DC are really popular, and so are their shows. But the shows are more aimed at the younger audiences, while the comics are aimed at the older audiences.

OHHHHHH, I HATE THE YGO DUB!!! X( it's so horrid. They took it and aimed it towards 7 year olds. *shivers*

Don't kill me okay? ^^; I mean no harm, and it's not like I'm a new fan of YGO. I'm pretty much obssessed with it. I didn't mean to offend you if I did. :(
