Godelsensei
I, myself, love names. Though this may seem like a strange comment (I find it rather odd, myself_ _U), flipping through baby name books is one of my favourite pass-times. Being an amteur writer, I am constantly in the want for good names to give my characters. Along the same lines, I often find myself wishing my name was Drusilla, Prue, or Yoshiko. These are some of my personal favourites... Things to name a boy: -Toru -Akira -Keoki -Francis -Louis (pronounced the French way, I mean) Things to name a girl: -Drusilla -Yoshiko -Prue -Nike (this is pronounced Nee-kee--that's right: the shoe company got it wrong) -Erieto Things to name a pet/plant: -Antoinne Waldo Riccardo -Persephone Well, that was fun. Maybe the cause of this post is that my name is oh-so-terribly mainstream. It doesn't even have a double "i". T_T Well, I'll just spell it the Greek way. Akhatariini. That's cool enough, I guess. If you're not bored of me already, I'd appreciate some names you think are cool...? *wanders off, and quite possibly, into something*
wrist cutter
-Nike (this is pronounced Nee-kee--that's right: the shoe company got it wrong)
It would only be wrong if English had any sort of rules as to how to pronounce any given word. Unfortunately it doesn't. Tomato, tomato. How else would you spell "nike", as the shoe company pronounces it? What magical spelling is the "correct" way? As far as I can tell, they spelled the word as they wanted it and that's how it is.
Kinetic
I also have a little "thing" for names (since I couldn't find a better word). At one point in time my step-father and mother were getting full custody of me and I had the option to change my name to whatever I wanted (if my mom didn't threaten to kill me for what I chose). Anyway, for some oddball reason I wanted Xavier, and thank God I didn't choose it because it would be retarded ^_^' No offense to anyone named Xavier. Just my personal. . .thoughts or something. Anyway, my mother wouldn't let me change Cole because it had meaning or William because it had meaning (which really pissed me off because I hate both names). So it went from Cole Justin William Austin to Cole William Shane Feagin (because I also liked Shane at the time). Anyway, enough blabbering. Names for a boy: Sean Josh Um, James? It is pronounced "Nike." The diety of victory or something of that nature. Anyway, I suppose they found that "Naye-kee" sounded better, so they used that pronounciation. Or they were just uninformed. ChibiHorsewoman
I'm a name freak too. I like to know the meanings of people's names. my given name is Megan Elizabeth. It's an ok name, but there are so many Megan's out there. Probably because when i was born is was in the top 5 most popular name's for girls. My husband's name is Lincoln Earl. He hates it. Of course, that's probably because he's heard. Land of Lincoln, Lincoln Logs, Hey, Abraham and Stinkin' Lincoln since he started school. I wonder how that became annoying. Of course, he's teh only Lincoln I've ever met. Altho I have heard of a few Lincolns. As I've been mentioning, I'm pregnant so my husband and I have been considering names for boys and girls. The girls have ranged from ordinary to out there, but the boy's names are usual. There will be no Lincoln Earl the seconds. We've narrowed it down to three for each. choices for girls 1. Abigail- 2. Linnea- 3. Elisabeth Choices for boys 1. Adam 2 Jason 3. David I want to get a dog and if it's a boy name him Loki for the norse god of Mischief. I never actually considered naming a plant, but one of my cousins named her car Gideon. Go figure.
Godelsensei
*flower petals* Do you throw flower petals when a baby is born? O.o Eh. Why not?^^ I have always loved my middle name, Louise, but my first name is so...normal. "Katherine." At least my parents had the decency to use the traditional spelling instead of "Kathryn", or even worse: "Cathrin". *shudder* C is such a wussy letter. Lydia's a pretty cool name, too. You ever read those books, "Lydia in Monet's Garden" or something. My little sister has a poster. I wanted that. Grr... I have always loved Japanese and Hawaiian names, personally. Heheh...Loki. You'd be able to talk to a friend of mine for a long time: she gives Tarot card readings.^_^ Well, congradulations! anyway. Heh.
Terpischore
Just some advice, try and avoid the names that have many different spellings. It'll drive the kid mad - me, for example, my name is Hayley - but as you could see, Hataki Vash spelled it "Hailey". Then there's also "Haley", "Hallee", "Hailee", "Haylei" and I could go on, but I won't... Girls: Elle (I think it sounds pretty...i did not get it off of Legally Blonde..) Ariel (w/ stress on the "el") Jade Annie Maggie Boys: Chris Ben James Peter ...there really aren't that many interesting boys names? English ones, that is...well, there probably is, but none that I can think of right now..hm..
Kanariya
Heh, my name is plain old Alexandra. I never liked the name...the only good thing about it is that it can be used to be called a boy. Alex. That's a better name for me. But in the end, teachers are always calling me Alexandra. My English/Social Studies teacher calls me Alexandria. It gets very annoying. Godelsensei, weird thing is a spanish assistant at my school is named Katherine and my sister's name is Lydia. O.o Anyway, I really don't plan to have children in the future anymore really, and I bet you think I'm a wuss. :p I don't really think about it in the 6th grade, because I'm usually focusing on everything in school or stuff, and I hardly day dream anymore or think about that kind of stuff. But off the top of my head, a boy name would be 'Josh', and a girl I can't think of right now. Edit later when I think of something. Semjaza
You can't really claim correct pronounciations of words assimilated into the English language based simply on their roots. Things change based on how people talk and form words in the language. If everything was pronounced like the original roots, we'd be talking much differently... even with many simple words. Most people don't even say Sacajawea correctly and that's someone pretty much everyone learns about in history classes early on. I guess we could all act like Alex Tribek and say every foreign word as if we were from that country... but eh, lol. I don't care about kid names, really. I think when I have my kid I'll see him or her and be like "Ah, he looks like a _______" and that's the name that will stick. I don't know if this is only about kids (the title doesn't make it seem like that), but I have lots of pet names picked out. Artemis, Darwin, etc. They're all pretty dorky, but that's the way I like it.
Sara
I don't know if this is only about kids (the title doesn't make it seem like that), but I have lots of pet names picked out. Artemis, Darwin, etc. They're all pretty dorky, but that's the way I like it.
So, so true. I've posted names before...recently, they've been coming from literary works...historical figures are nice, too. I think Machiavelli is one I'm mentioned a few times. There are a handful of pretty nifty names from Shakespeare, too. I used to collect little animal figurines...salt and pepper shakers, crayons, little toys, pieces of jewelry...pretty any animal-shaped object I could find for less that a dollar or two was purchased and brought home to my collection. They all had names. Every last one of 'em. A lot of them (in retrospect) sound like Beanie Baby names (Lucky the Ladybug, Pride the Lion...), but some I still really like. A few of the highlights:

Sir Francis Drake, the duck. (Get it? Drake?) I've still got him, he's one of my favorites. Named after the English pirate fellow.
Princess Marsha Mellow. This was a cat that...for some reason...always reminded me of marshmallows. Go figure.
Baron von Stuebon, the gargoyle. Another of my favorites, again, named after a historical figure.
Georg the Bear was named after the Sound of Music character. He's carved out of wood, very nifty.
Andy Griffin actually predates the rest of my collection by a year or two. Do I really need to explain the name? He's a little griffin, carved out of...I don't know, some kind of white translucent rock.
Pegosa was a turtle named for a line in a CW McCall song. "Crashed into the side of a feed store...down town Pegosa Springs."
Despite it's quaintness, Zeb the Zebra's name is actually short for Zebulon Pike, who I think had something to do with Utah...I'll have to look that one up again. I used to keep a paper journal faithfully, too...one of the volume's was named Zebulon as well. Same namesake. Edit: Yeah, explorer-dude. Pike's Peak, and whatnot. Arcadia
I, like others, name just about everything I own. Especially if it's electronic in any way, shape, or form. For instance, my beloved laptop is Charles Williams, or "Chucky Wills" for short, named after the guy who actually sold it to me. He was the coolest computer tech guy ever. iPod = Squirtle Stereo = Pikachu Printer = Steve Cellphone = Pippin (This is also the name of my roommate's computer - she finally broke down and let me name it.) Alarm clock = the banshee the TV = Terrence (A mutual agreement between me and the roomie, since it's technically hers, after all.) I also enjoy coming up with random pet names, or adopting really old ones from movies and that. Like "Ducky" and "Sweetness Heart". It's all good fun. Kid names, meh. Screw the kids. My stories benefit from that for now; we'll burn that bridge when we get to it. Or is it cross? Eh, same difference.
RPCrazy
Oh dear god, where do I start? When I first started writing, I was constantly looking up new names online. And then, when my siblings and their spouses started having children and there was an overload of baby name books in every house, I simply collected all of them and now have about 5 different baby name books stacked in my room. I collect little ceramic animal figurines. At first it was a shared hobby with some friends of mine. We would use them to create little stories and games of make believe. So of course every one had to have a name. Admittedly, some were more creative than others, but my personal favorite is a golden lab girl I had named Delilah as well as a collection of horses all named after places or characters from "The NeverEnding Story" movie. Sadly, we've stopped the games of make believe and naming each new one has become...well, really a nuisance. But the main characters from our games still have their titles. My friend has a black GameCube she calls Charcoal, and this inspired me to start calling my silver Cube system Pewter. Countless stuffed animals, all with names. Crayon (an original cat Build-A-Bear from before BAB went global. It was just this dinky lil' cart in the nearby mall), Muddy (a post franchised BAB dog), larger ceramic creatures I painted in this class I took, Littlest Pet Shop Pets (anyone remember these? I loved them!), My Little Ponies, almost every single Pokemon I ever caught in the R/B/Y versions...now the critters I've adopted online at my website. As far as children go? Well, I'm always tossing that around in my head. - Lilith Jean - Lilith was the name of the first RPing character I ever created. It was the first female name I ever found in a baby book that seemed to jump out at me. Besides, lilies are my favorite flowers, and it tickles me that I can call her "My Little Lily." Jean is my mother's middle name, and I've always been fond of it. - Tobias James - Tobias comes from the Animorphs books. Before I lost interest in the series, Tobias had been my favorite character. This later became the name of my first ever dragon rider, whose story can be found in the fiction forum. James...well, I always liked the name. And I think it flows well with Tobias. - Kennith Warner - Kennith spelled with an "ith." I was approx. 12 years old when I started thinking of the names of my children. I'm always hoping I'll be blessed with twin boys after the birth of Lily, and I realized if I wanted to name one son Tobias I needed to find a name for his brother as well. As much as I hate to admit it, inspiration did come from South Park and the "Oh my God! You killed Kenny!" joke. Warner...I believe I was watching Cartoon Network and the Warner Bros. logo came onto the screen. I said it over in my head...and I liked it. Kennith Warner. It makes my mother cringe, though. Lol. - Auryn - Auryn is the newest name, thought of only back in December. I've been doing a lot of inner searching of myself, and realized just how heavily the movie "The NeverEnding Story" influenced and continues to inspire my life. The Auryn, if you don't remember, is the symbol of The Childlike Empress given to the main character Atreyu at the start of his quest and is also seen on the cover of the story itself. I'm still looking for a fitting middle name, however. I laugh to myself sometimes and joke that I'll call her Auryn Moon Child, which is the new name given to The Childlike Empress by Bastian. Honestly, I don't think it sounds that bad...but I'd never curse my child with a name like that. ^_^; For a random fact: I once asked my parents what they would have named me if I had been born a boy. Though I can't remember the reason why, if had I been a boy my name would have been Peter. Now, for a random question: Does anyone else know what their "Gender Counter Name" is?

I had a Denver, a Madison, a Jefferson...those are the only ones I can remember. Heh. And Auryn, heh... Very nice. Do you know, I was almost done with the book before I realized that each chapter starte with a different letter of the alphabet? I always thought that was really cool. (The way they started, not that it took me forever to notice it.) I think Atreyu woudn't be a bad name, either. I'll have to look into that. I've been toying with the idea of naming a couple plants I have--some bamboo and a couple things grown from avocados. I was surprised when I realized I hadn't named them yet, but they haven't been doing so great lately, and I'm reluctant to name something that I fear is about to die. //
Mitch
I have no use for a name. Of course it's not a real baby, but it does cry a lot. The best part is you get to name the baby. One of my friends was in an odd mood and named her baby-think-it-over: Caligulis Rigermortis Oliver Murphy. My mom sometimes says that she was going to name me Esmeralda Hortense and my brother Marmaduke Duncan, but neither one sounds as bad as being named Cletis...or Earl.

I remember some of the Littlest Pet Shop Pets...i named a cat Pepper, a little scottish dog named Scotty, the dog with the magnetic nose Ruff....My Little Ponies, I can't remember my names for those... Of course, Barbies...I had a name for every one of those, but doesn't everybody? Ironically, none of mine were named Barbie...my main barbie was named Karen...but Ken was Ken..I really couldn't think of any male names back then... I named all of my stuffed animals, one teddy bear that i've had since I was three's real name is Jessica, but she likes to be called Teddy (original, right?), Marshmallow, Rusty, Penny, and Boots (Penny & Boots came with names - those big beanie babies) all sleep in my bed, and I have an assortment of stuffed animals on my shelves...my beanie babies kept their names, it got so confusing if I named some dear another name, for example, because I would always forget which name I called her...yeah.. Madame Alexander dolls were a big thing for me too, but I stuck with the names that they came in, though...but back then I couldn't imagine the babies that didn't have hair were girls so those babies were always men, dispite that they were named Victoria. In my spare time and when I start a new story, I always spend about a day just looking at baby names/baby name sites just to look for cool names and to see what my friends' names mean...it's a real time waster, though...
