Renee
Why don't we have a spell check? Some posts are simply bad because the person can't spell very well or because english isn't their main language. I just think it would be more helpful for the members. You really can't go wrong with a spell check. (Unless we can't filter curse-words) It's just my two-cents. *shrugs* P.S. I apologise if there is a spell check already. I can't seem to find one. *looks about the page*
Guest ScirosDarkblade
A spell check would help but it would have to be implemented the way Word's is or something, because too many people like to do the "u r" stuff and there are way too many random Japanese words thrown in here and there, and then there are tons of names, etc. etc. Something like Pagemaker's spell check would just be a nuisance. However, once we implement a spellcheck, how are we going to take cheap shots at people's speling erors?
Renee
I'm pretty sure you can edit what words are deemed mispelt or not. I wouldn't know, I've never looked into it before.
jblessing
While the suggestion is a good one, incorporating a spell check into the forums is not something I foresee at all. Mainly, it would be rather difficult to do this, especially for myself, and I highly doubt a hack/modification will be released for this soon. To put it simply, there won't be a spell check at the boards in a long time. However, one suggestion I make is to simply type up your posts in Word or Works and then paste it into the reply box. This would be more efficient, as Word also helps on grammar, etc.
Renee
Aww, but I'm lazy! ;P I can understand how it might be difficult, but maybe some day...
Semjaza
Take Justin's suggestion. I think it's the best one. The thing about online spell checkers is that they have to have a dictionary to rely on. There's a lot of weird usernames and words about thanks to the anime influence on this board. I don't know that people would want to have the spell checker question all of those less standard ones, as it would be very likely to do. If someone is too lazy to write decently enough that people can understand it, I can't see why anyone would want to keep them around anyway. James
I can also imagine people's posts getting a lot worse if they use a spell checker, because the spell checker might try to substitute the wrong words (in cases where it doesn't recognize Japanese words or other non-dictionary terms, for lack of a better description). And then we'd have complaints about that. I also feel that if members aren't putting the effort into their spelling in the first place, it's pretty unlikely that they'd go to the extra effort to use a spell checker that we provide. I mean, a lot of people are too lazy to even use Private Messages when they're involved in RPGs. And as Justin pointed out, the technical issue is a major one. We can only provide as much as our own technical abilities (and our site's technology) will allow. Beyond that, there isn't much more we can do.
Mnemolth
If, for whatever reason, you can't use Word or Works, say you're at some public computer that doesn't have them or something, and you want to spell check your post, just copy and paste it into SpellCheck. It will give you suggestions on words it doesn't like, and you can decide to change them or not. Once you're happy with it, copy & paste it back into your post, and viola, you're done. Of course, it doesn't check grammar or anything like that, and it uses an American dictionary, but yeah... now you really don't have any excuses for mis-spelling. :)
G/S/B Master
I don't have Microdoft word. I use www.spellonline.com. It's the same system as Mnemolth's spellcheck. The bad thing is, I don't remember to use it much XD. Anyways, I just need a grammar check. And it's all fine and dandy.
