yalborap
Has anybody seen this anime, and if so, what do you think about it? personally I think it's great, lots of comedy, nice amount of plot, good amount of action, and taishi((I think I spelled it right.)) is awesome to no end. To those that don't know about it, basically a mega-otaku gets two of his friends into a fan-comic convention where one further feels that otaku are the scum of the earth, while the other one falls in love with it instantly and begins to make his own comic while slowly pulling himself farther and farther away from his friend/girlfriend/we-don't-know-yet, who is the one that feels otaku are scum. There's only one volume out right now(number two is out may 25th), but it's really good and worth checking out, plus it's only 20 bucks at best buy. densuke
A "has anybody seen x" thread has a pretty short lifespan around here, and with good reason... Anyway, Comipa has a lot of things going for it. To me this is hardly a new title - I've seen it twice, the first time in 2001 when it was fansubbed. Here are some handy facts: Comic Party 13 Episode TV series Air Dates: 4/2/2001 to 6/25/2001 Production: Aquaplus/KSS Based on Leaf ero-game (1999), Dreamcast game The TV series is just now being released by Rightstuf. There is also a 4-part short-episode Special and a new OAV just coming out this year. All of these could conceivably be discussed in this thread. Comipa and its predecessor To Heart (from the same team) express the environment of the story rather than focusing on romantic situations. In this way, they dish out big helpings of the kind of feel-good which has little to do with hormonal urges. Kazuki (male lead) and Mizuki, who are neighbors and high-school classmates, are awkwardly sorting out a best-friends-growing-up situation. There are other female characters on hand - in the game they, like Mizuki, are potential girlfriends. The world of DIY manga publishing is the show's ostensible subject. Kazuki's talent for drawing leads him into this world as a reluctant and ignorant newcomer. Early in the series he realizes that manga is a possible means of self-expression for him. The viewer learns right along with Kazuki about what it takes to self-produce a worthwhile manga. Rewatching the series I discovered that Comic Party is really about the sempai-kouhai relationship. Kazuki is soon surrounded by patient and caring friends and acquaintances who have experience in the manga world. They support him in creating and producing manga and keeping the rest of his life on track, allowing him to learn from his own mistakes but stepping in when he really needs a hand. This friendship and support and the way the anime depicts them make the show very charming and memorable. Dragonfaery
^_^ I have! Of course, I only have the first DVD. But, I have seen some on the Japanese DVDs. Taishi is just hilarious with his world domination thing. Amazingly, one of my friends has an obsession of him... Goodness. The show does give good tips on creating a fanmanga. Guest gendou ikari
Taishi is insane. That pretty much sums it up for those of you who don't know. The plot is bascically listed above, so I don't have to go into it. The music is Ok, and the plot is pretty original, but the art is pretty outstanding, it has smooth animation and nice character designs.
densuke
Well I have seen 2 episodes of the OAV so I will take a crack at comparing the TV and OAV series. First I will get Taishi out of the way. As the only make character besides Kazuki he is lost in the OAV, which wants to reintroduce all the girls as potential girlfriends for Kazuki. In episode 1 he did hardly anything and in episode 2 he ran around stirring up trouble without being the focus. Even though Kazuki is more or less up for grabs, Mizuki is still present. All she got to do in episode 1 was cook very badly (which seemed out-of-character) and act in a possessive and hotheaded manner. In the TV series she was designed to be much more likable. The other girls get much more play here, and some get their own episodes, but these episodes are not character sketches. There is just too much going on with other characters popping in and out. In fact, the show is claustrophobic, with tiny little scenes leading into more and more tiny little scenes. Kazuki himself has nothing more to learn from the other characters. The new situation shows progression from the TV series, but an awful lot of friendly feeling is lost - Kazuki himself looks bemused at best and often harrassed, far from the enterprising young lad he was when only a novice doujinka. So much for the story. This series looks a lot different but doesn't maintain consistency in the character designs. The characters never look terrible but often they do not look good. There is a lot of fanservice - nothing like the horndog madness of m*o*e's oeuvre but it is very systematic and deliberate. I guess the producers realize that as written, half of these girls wouldn't be worth the time of day if they weren't wearing tight pants etc. The music is a notch or two down from what the TV series dished out. The old OP was pretty catchy, and the ED was very good. I just don't get much out of the new tracks. I guess nowadays pretty much anything is bound to get licensed, which means that people who liked the TV show may be be thinking about buying this series next year. Best to get the fansubs now if you can and find out what you are in for.
Naru
Sadly, the only episode I've seen is the first, which was provided by Newtype USA. Still, I thought it was very funny. I like the person with green hair and glasses. I forgot his name, it starts with a T I think.. I put off watching it for a while, in fact, I only watched it for the first time last night! The episode I wanted the most on the sample DVD was Azumanga Daioh, so I wasn't too interested in Comic Party. Well, the next two issues came out and I had nothing to do so I popped in Kaliedo Star first [surprisingly,I really liked this one!], then Comic Party. Lets just say I ran down stairs begging my mom to take me to Best Buy, even thought it was 10:00 at night. Of course I got the whole "Not tonight, its 10:00, maybe tomorrow after you guitar lessons, do you even have money, I thought you were saving your money for the Anime Con?" speech....Darn parents and their so-called "rational/common sence" reasons... My Guitar lesson starts in 15 minutes then I'm going to Best Buy! Ja Mata Ne! ~naru-chan :rotflmao:

I LOVE it---Miss Yukari steals the show, and Osaka is so slow, but hilarious! I saw the 1st episode of Comic Party...and I thought the manga-ka was older, like maybe thirties. The first episode moves pretty quickly, which i like in an anime, but i hope there are other plots, other than just starting their own fan comic about the manga, which i'm pretty sure there will be. Randomness is always good!!
TheGodlyME
I've seen about the first 4/5 episodes. IT'S AWESOME! I can't watch the rest until I get a new tv, because mine broke down...boo...I have watched a couple episodes on the PS2, but I'm afraid for the discs... Godelsensei
Seeing as I just picked up the collector's addition box and slip-cover (omfgz limited edition!!!1111one), I thought I'd contribute my little bit of fandom to this thread. Normally, I wouldn't give manga or anime involving such a shiny, big-eyed art-style a second glance, as that kind of art just turns me off alot of the time, but something about Comic Party caught my eye. Maybe it was the fact that it was manga about manga? (Or that my hero handed me a volume while I was eating lunch one day, and said, "Hey, read this! This is just how I described you to my friend over the internet!" He was referring to the image of the typical otaku.) Anyway, I really enjoy the characters and the intense absurdity of the plot that manages to be incredibly easy to relate to. The characters are just so adorable, not to mention perfectly suited to the mood. I know it's rash to spend sixty dollars on an anime you've only read one volume of the manga of, but, man, I loved the design in the box-set. So kawaii.^^ And it has Taishii looking like the evil mastermind he is on the top face of the box, too. : 3 (That dude reminds me of a friend of mine, down to the ritual self-disembowlment and everything. >_>") So yes: je l'aime.
MaineOtakuNo2
Its on Anime Network On Demand right now, and although they may have ruined it quite a bit I must say it is both amusing and intruiging (can't spell right now). Being in Maine I have never even heard of a convention coming here, and have never seen one out of state either. With that being said it was interesting seeing how a (hopefully) experienced artist can show it. It has quite a bit of comedy and although that seems to be the main theme the romance does show up. Yes, Taichi is a freak of nature but he keeps the mood up for the poor guy who has to work in that restaurant. He's never watched anime or read manga and he has to cosplay, kinda hard huh? Dagger
could somebody post taishi's speech from episode 1 for me please
Welcome to OtakuBoards, winddragon. ^_^ Please keep in mind that we place a strong emphasis on post quality. eleanor
The first episode was ok. The second was ok, too. So was the third and fourth and fifth and then somewhere it went from ok to really bad and incredibly boring for me. I personally loathe the art style, and how all the characters look, except for like one. (sorry, but art style is a huge factor me when it comes to watching anime). Worst of all I can predict what will happen during the episode right from the start and most of the times I'm right. You cannot know how unbelievably and fantastically excruciating for me to watch the episodes after I do that. Most of the times I don't even watch the rest. I have NO idea why this anime is getting good reviews from many people. The idea of it, I guess, is original. It's the only reason I decided to watch it, and it's just...ugh. I really hate it. It tries to be funny, or something.* It also tries to add a nice romance.** *It's not funny. **Worst romance ever.

duoikari
I have watched comic party and i think it was very good but, it was a little too real to life for some people. Most people like fantasy anime like Tenchi or Ah my goddess. My favourite character was Taishi, he was like a mixture of excel and Ill pa from Excel Saga. Godelsensei
Comic Party's a great series. The animation isn't the most beautiful thing on this earth and the voices/character designs may not be more inspired than Dali, but I really love most things about it. It's cute, genuinely funny, and overall fun. (Like a younger Genshiken, only less "hentai is everywhere!!!") The use of a very stereotypical, wide-eyed art style works wonders in this anime. It re-emphasizes the series' point, as a whole: it's an anime, of a manga, about a doujinshi. Because of this, the characters act the way they would, were they in a typical anime series, only on purpose. Most of Taishi's lines, along with the whole, "You just hit me with a bat full of nails!" bit are quite charming in this way. Which brings me to another point: Taishi. My god. Sexiest man alive. And he has a great voice. "MAI BROTHER AND-O MAI SISTA." It's details like that that make Comic Party a truly great endeavor. Especially when one's first tongue is English and you can hear just how lame some of the poor guy's catch-phrases are. I spent $64 on the first two DVDs, along with the collector's edition box, so you could say I frigging adore this series. (Also, I do believe I effectively introduced our hero, Skippedry, to it, though I am unaware as to whether she actually watched it or not.) Edit: Before posting in the new Comic Party thread, I searched for an old one, not remembering if one had happened or not. I didn't find one, so don't think I'm stupid for repeating myself. xD;;
