Well, some of you may know but for those who dont. I live in Birmingham, Alabama. I always knew that we had some big problems with the civil rights movement in the 60's but I never really understood how bad it really was untill the other day.

I was watching MTV and I saw DMX's new video. I then saw throughout the video, shocking pictures of alabama's past. I saw things like People marching down the street holding signs that said: "Keep Alabama White!" and the infamous seen of the blacks being sprayed with fire hoses (sp?).

I was utterly shocked at this. Like I said. I knew we had done some bad things but to actually see it happening on tv and the way the people where treating everyone was just sad.

We have discussed some of this stuff at school and I have heard it on talk radio about things like that that took place here but I never new it was to that extent.

Just seeing those images made me embarresed that I was from Alabama. I know we have changed a great deal here but there is still a vast majority that are racists. Even at times like this, they are still acting that way.

I want everyone to know that I am in know way like this and that I cant stand people who are. Im so ashamed everytime I see that video.

Not everyone from Alabama is racist. Just like every person from california surfs (ok, bad example) But people in the US and abroad don't think that way of you or anyone else from Alabama so just let it go.

Well, look at England, we were the ones who needed materials from America, so then they got black slaves from Africa and shipped them back to US and then we got materials...England started all that madness off in the first place...

Racism is one of the bad seeds of mankind. It will die over time, I am certain. You shouldn't worry about a past that you weren't a part of. If anyone blames you for Alabama's past, they are ignorant and blind. Just don't let it get to you.
I hope it will die out...

i know how you feel. my great-grandmother & grandparents are extremely racist. my parents are pretty racist. when i was fifteen, my dad punched me directly in the face for going out w/ a black guy. the guy was so worried about my safety that he broke up w/ me. i never quite forgave my dad for that. but i don't worry...i am nothing like them, just as you are nothing like the people of alabama in the past. we can learn from negative example here. we know what NOT to be.

they get tired... they eat.... they talk.... they think... they feel...
they can walk like i can...
they have a different color skin... thats all...

Im gonna go off on one now:

ppl are judgemental: u generally do judge someone by the way they look, even if its just a little.
If u have blonde hair yor a bimbo, if u wear glasses your a geek and if your black you steal cars and rob banks, these, to name a few stereotypes are what we are led to believe, mainly through media influences. We have ppl in sheffield going around like their from the ghetto, this is entirely coz theyve seen it on tv, thought, oh i look like that ill do that, coz ppl expect me to.
If somebody with a caveman brow beats u up when you are young, when you grow older in the back of your mind there will always be a part of u that dislikes ppl with furrowed brows, this is why there will always be 'isms.

Yeah, like my eyebrows kinda join, I hate it...but they think I can't be trusted, or I'm an evil vampire (yah!) and one kid asked a few days ago, "Are you a werewolf?" WEIRDOS! I mean, I'm a hypocrit, saying this stuff, because I sometimes do it too. They call me mushroom head, bowl head, mop head, any of those cliche names for people with long hair (how am I a bowl if I have long curtain hair? ) And I wear glasses, but use contacts...see, all those things are used to take the piss outta people, they do it to me, it works, they get beats!:demon:

yeah, round here the asians have been throwing fireworks at people and shouting, calling people 'white trash' and stuff. A group of them about two weeks ago actually had the nerve to spit on my friend leanne when she was out one night, and when she asked them what they thought they were doing an argument started and they ended up ganging up on her and beating her. I cant say that the white people round here dont help with the friction, but like most of my friends we're just tired of always being the ones blamed for being racist. Schools and the police are almost afraid to say a coloured person was being racist to a white person..even though they know it happens. My friend Leanne was told she had to change schools after the incident happened, until the whole of our year went to the head and told him basically to stop being such an @rse because it was punishing her when it wasn't her fault. I hope things sort themselves out soon and I think it would be nice for there to be no racisim full stop....but I still think dispite all the effort we've made so far, peace is a long way off.

Ahh yes, Alabama.... My best friend lived there and Arizona... the two most boring places on the face of the planet.... hahaha....

Anyway, yes, the Civil Rights Movement... HUGE in Alabama... huge in alot of southern states... but more so in Alabama than anywhere else....

If I'm not mistake, didn't the Montgomery Bus Boycott start there? Rosa Parks.... or was that somewhere else... anyway, that was the first time Martin Luther King Jr ever got his name nationally recognized....

Yeah.... it's sad what we did, as Americans, to anyone really... Just because of some stupid thing as color or race... thats crap.... but America can only learn from it's mistakes... however we seem to NOT be learning very well or else we wouldn't be harrassing Muslims and Middle Eastern Americans..... ::sigh:: tragedy brings out the worst and best in people....
