The Village--Hit or Miss?

I watched "Unbreakable" last night (Samuel Jackson did a GREAT job) and saw the 7-minute footage of The Village included in between.

So tell me. You think it's as scary as it seems? I'm all up for it! I'm already dying to see what happens after watching the footage. But, some movies weren't as scary as they first appeared, such as "Signs."

Anyways, so yeah! I'd love to hear everyone's input on this. I like the whole idea with the movie taking place in colonial times, and there's "things" in the woods they have to watch out for. Heh, they won't even enter them, let alone go NEAR it!

I think The Village will be a hit.

I'm very much looking forward to The Village, and I'm also trying to guess; what's it really about? Unbreakable was really a super-hero film, Signs was really a religious film...I'm thinking The Village might be a modernized fairy tale. Critters living in the woods? Anyway, I can't wait.

I really really want to see the movie, so I'm bouncing around and waiting for my friend's birthday so my friends and I can all go watch it. ^_^. I didn't see the seven-minute preview [had no idea that they gave one, lol], but I've seen the preview in theatres about three times. It's looks very interesting and pretty scary [though I get scared of horror movies....extemely quickly], and I like the director anyway. :)

I have no prediction of how well it will come out to be, though. The only feedback I've gotten is from three friends, and other people I know just don't talk about it. :/

I've only read random things about the film. Some of it from people who have supposedly seen the film. If what they say is true, I'm not expecting much at all from the ending... which is too bad.

But I'm sure I'll see the movie anyway. It should have some good moments. Hell, I don't like Signs at all and it had its good parts.

Rrrrrrrrrrrgh! *presses fingers hard against temples*

Well, my memory's inept, but I'll try.

The Village, judging from what I've seen, takes place in colonial times...like, maybe 1700's? Anyways, these settlers find a village (I think) and they have the 'perfect life.' That is, if they abide by the village rules. Rules that say things like "stay away from the woods; they live there" and "when the bell rings, stay in your houses and lock up." I think there's a third rule, but I forgot.

Anways, that's all I can remember. There's lookout towers near the edge of the forest. I guess the villagers are trapped or something.

That's the element of movies that scare me--the ONLY element--is when the plot keeps the, er, threats (such as in 'Signs'), hidden or concealed, and you have no clue what's out there. But I hate it at the
end of Signs, when they finally showed the alien. That ruined it for me. For the rest of the film, I was thinkin' "WTF???"
But I like it on movies when they only reveal noises and darting shadows. That's what makes movies scary. Kinda like Silent Hill, when you can only see so much of the threat. Blair Witch Project has that element, too.

Basically, the unknown.

Ironic that you use Signs as an example in the original post, when he's the same guy who's doing The Village (not trying to be a "know-it-all" I just throw around my knowledge whenever I...uh... have it).

Well, I'm having mixed feelings about this. The plot and everything looks like it can go either way... super lame or my next DVD.

My friend, who also LOVES the director, is most likely going to bring me (willingly or otherwise) so I know I'll see it... but hit or miss? Still undecided.

I think that was her point in naming the film in the first place.

I don't really go for that type of movie so no, I won't be seeing it since :
1.) I'll have to get up and go to the rest room 5x during the movie

and 2.) Like I said, it's not my kind of movie.

But I've heard it was based on a book by some guy, but I can't remember the name of the author. So could someone help me with that?

M. Night Shyamalan is the next Steven Spielberg. That said, my thoughts on 'The Village'...

Shyamalan has a great way of bringing out little details in his films that make it all come alive. The fact that it is set in the past made me wonder if it would be harder to get into the 'atmosphere' of it since we first have to mentally immerse ourselves in the past before we can immerse ourselves in the plot. But if any director can pull this off, it's Shyamalan.

I like the idea for the film: it sort of reminds me of the last few chapters in "A Wrinkle In Time". I think it will also be a bit of an homage to New England scary folk legends, like those Poe and Washington Irving wrote. I've always loved the unique feel these tales have.

So, in conclusion, 'The Village' will be a great film. If I'm wrong, you can sue me for wasting your time and money ;)

I'm looking forward to The Village. It seems to be a pretty good movie from the previews. They are pushing it heavily for a movie that is nearly 3 months away. I really like the way

I've noticed that M. Night Shyamalan's movies are hard to judge without seeing the movie. I thought the Sixth Sense was going to suck, until I saw how cleverly it was made and the brilliance in its plot. Then I thought Unbreakable was going to be good but it disappointed me. Finally I came down to Signs which I thought was going to be aweful, but turned out to be ok. I really can't judge his movies because he is such a wonderful director and I believe he is the master of the plot twist.

M. Night also seems to attach himself to certain actors in the buisiness. Bruce Willis had the lead role in both The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, and now Joaquin Phoenix finds his career in the hands of Night. M. Night also does the Steven King and appear in his own movies in minor parts.

I'm not to sure about this one. 'The Village' may go either way, but from the previews it seems like on of those 'scary movies' that makes me laugh the whole way through. I mean, the trailer made me laugh plenty... because of the music in most cases. Ok, the plot? There are these creatures that live in the woods apparently and the villagers are freaked out by these things. The creatures appeal to me and all, but it kind of lets on that the movie will be cheesey. I can't quite say the way it will turn out, I am at a 50-50 thing with it. Some of the elements of the movie, sure, appeal to me, while others not as much. I guess we'll just have to see about this one.

Yeah, I agree. But still, I haven't even SEEN the creatures in the woods, or "Them."

But I'm still up for it. It sure as hell seems suspenseful. I just hope the ending of it wasn't like "Signs."

As they say, different strokes for different folks.

I am not really sure what to expect from The Village plot wise, but I am sure that the cinematography will be amazing. Shyamalan just does a wonderful job of using angles and colors to emphasize the mood he is trying to project.

As far as the plot and purpose of The Village, I am not really sure what to expect. I expected one thing from Signs and the movie ended up being entirely different than what I thought. I guess I am kind of expecting a ?sacrificial? type of movie, where the villagers have to make an offering to some type of wicked beast. I am probably way off.

Anyway, I have high hopes for the cinematography and I guess that if the plot is cool than it is just icing on the cake.

i'm kind of skeptical about the village. ( of course i'm going to see it though. )

the sixth sense was good ( i think everyone probably had to see it a second time.....unless of course their psychic....or the movie to them was just so predictable.)
i didn't really like unbreakable though. it really wasn't as good as i was expecting or hoping.
signs just totally sucked. it was horrible.
so....the preview might look good, but i'm betting that m. night shamalhan (is that how u spell his name?) will actually show what the things look like that are terrorizing the village and killing the people and all that. it would really suck if he did that though, because things are always so much more scarier if they don't show what they look like; and then when they do show what they look like, you realize that they're really not all that scary, and the fear dies away. (because the fear that builds up in you before u see the actual monster or whatever can't match what the actual thing looks like on film. and normally they do a bad job at creating the actual monster.)
thats just my personal opinion. agree or disagree.

so yeah, i'll probably see the village.

I'm definetly going to be seeing this movie. I could care less if it is good or not, because it is just another reason to go hang out with the friends. It looks good by the few previews I have seen. I get scared very easily, so it will most likely be scary for me, whereas it will be making others laugh. I can't wait.

Going from the previews that I saw for this film, The Village looks like it has the potential to be a very entertaining movie. I've been anticipating it for about a month now, and will see it as soon as possible. When I first saw it, though, I thought it was going to be some settler movie at first, lol, but by the end of the trailer I was hooked.

I've seen M. Night Shyamalan's other three films (though he probably made others, I don't know), and I have to say that I loved them all. The Sixth Sense was a great horror-type movie, and while I haven't seen it in a while, I remember that it left a good taste in my mouth. Unbreakable was awesome because the plot felt very professional in showing a modern day, more subtle superhero movie. There were a lot of people that didn't really like Signs because
they ended up showing the alien at the end
, but that didn't really ruin the rest of the movie for me because they had just set it up so well, and the outcome wasn't that bad. Due to the large amount of people noted their dislike about that part of Signs, I'm supposing that Shyamalan will have learned from his mistake, meaning that I'll take a guess to say that it's unlikely we'll see the creatures of the forest in The Village. What I like about Shyamalan's movies is that they just have such a great appeal, which I speak from experience having seen them all in theaters, lol.

As for what type of movie this is, they set it up to look like a scary movie, but they did that with Signs and that wasn't truely a horror film. He has potential, though, as we saw in Sixth Sense.

I'll post my opinions on the film once I see it. ^_^

Well, for those that do know of the supposed original ending, it's was apparently refilmed. Or that's what is being said. I can't say if the original ending ever really existed in the first place or whether or not it will be the final one either.

If you care to read it, it went something like this
The "monsters" are construction workers. The people in this village are so isolated and weird that they never realized the world around them had advanced beyond them. The marks on the doors are marks to signal knocking down the houses. People have labelled this as the "Stupid ******* white people" ending lol.
I know I have a few things wrong, but that's the basics of it from my memories. If you read that, it's your own problem. Don't get mad at me.

Tony, if that's the actual ending, I'm going to be laughing my head off, lol. I'm literally laughing to the point of tears right now. I don't think that's a bad ending, necessarily, but it's certainly not a good one. I can't even quite explain it, but...it seems like it would totally contradict the entire Shyamalan film idea, lol. I mean, granted, some of the white people in his previous films were fairly dense, but this...oh man, I've got to see it now, even though I wasn't interested in it at all because of Signs, which I felt was utterly inferior, and considering that Unbreakable was pretty good but not mindblowing like Sixth Sense, I viewed Shyamalan as a One-Trick Pony.

If that's the actual ending of the movie, and I pay money to see it, I'm demanding a refund. Then I'm going to laugh really hard.

I've seen some newer previews on TV (the last ones I saw were when I went to see Lady Killers, now there's a good movie) it looks like the village is supossed to be set in a combination of 18th and 19th centuries. If you've seen the commercials I saw, they actually showed a classroom with a chalkboard.

What I'm wondering is if there's a book about the movie. I think I'd much rather read that than watch a movie with a rumored to be stupid ending.

I did see Unbreakable and I thought the ending to that was less than spectacular. Even though it was interesting to see two extremes represented. One person is pretty much indistructable and the other is practically glass. I have to say the best line in that movie is when Bruce Willis tells the kid playing his son that: Friends don't shoot friends.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go dig up Sixth Sense because I have the DVD somewhere, I just haven't watched it and I want to compare a few things. Even though I've heard some people say that that ending was less than spectacular as well.

I just saw the movie, and as far as that "ending" goes, the real ending has many similarities...

It's an intersting, typical M. Night movie. When you think you've figured it out, he makes you think again, and then you realize, you already thought that this woul dbe the ending, but you never knew till the end. Get it?

Spoiler of ending:
When I was watching the movie, even the first scene, I thought right away that maybe the year on the tombstone wasn't the real date... but i shrugged it off as one of my many thoughts on the movie. As the movie progressed, I began to think, if this was actually happening in recent times, why the hell wouldn't they see planes flying over. That was revealed at the end. Then I also thought that the "creatures" were fake... made up by someone in the village, never really thought it was this huge secret. Anyway, the end was just as I had thought... this was all happening during recent time, but I never thought they did this all voluntarily.
Leave it up to M. Night Shaymalan to write such a complex and compelling story.
I'm probably going to see it Sunday. The one star review from Ebert doesn't leave me too optimistic though. I've not seem him speak that negatively of a film in quite some time.
I wouldn't expect him to like it. He's more old fashion as far as liking acting skills and a well written plot that doesn't twist around and do the things that Shaymalan's movies typically do. You have to like Shaymalan or not like him. He's more hit or miss than anything... I bet Roper liked it though...

I saw this the other day, and I liked it a hell of a lot better than I did "Signs." I thought the overall story was very well written, and the acting was all great. I was just amazed by all the different quirks each villager seemed to have, and just the fact that it was all very out of the ordinary. I was particularly humored by the fact they did not use any contractions in their speech, and just the overall manner in which they spoke.

It is a very complex plotline, though. It is one of those movies you have to keep watching in order to continue understanding what is going on, I think. It keeps you on your toes. Much like Transtic said, "When you think you've figured it out, he makes you think again, and then you realize, you already thought that this woul dbe the ending, but you never knew till the end."

Spoiler of the Creatures:
Much like when you first see the creatures, I just thought, "There's no way they are real." The costumes seemed incredibly fake. Then you find out the conspiracy that they are actually costumes within the movie. Then you hear the main elder say that there have been tales of those creatures actually existing. Next thing you know, the character Ivy runs into one, in which I thought, "A real one??! o_O". Finally you find out it was not an actual creature.
After the movie I felt mentally drained, because there is just so much to take in it seems, lol. I enjoyed it however.

Methinks Alex is going to have a total field day with this movie.

First of all, The Village is aesthetically appealing. The cinematography seems nice (though I'm not the best judge of such matters) and Ron Howard's daughter is both gorgeous and a good actress. However, it's not at all frightening or even creepy; the only part that really gripped me was the scene in which the camera pans back to show Ivy
standing in a field of red berries.
Unlike Signs, the film has an excuse for the
incredibly doinky monster designs.
But while the twists--or whatever one would call them--do make sense, they feel unnecessarily gimmicky. The Village just isn't very emotionally compelling. The ending
is too happy and doesn't resolve any of the movie's larger issues. It doesn't make much of a difference whether it was people or monsters who skinned and mutilated those baby animals. We never learn which Elder had that particular task, and frankly I think anyone who would willingly perform it must possess some serious psychological problems.
