Soal
Well I created this story a while ago and well I want to share it with everyone here, it is kinda short though. The story of Algebra. A long time ago there was a teacher that taught at a school, the children teased him constantly. One day he got tired of all the pranks the children played on him so he went home that night and made a plan to get revenge on them. The next day he went to school, and taught the children, what he called algebra. They didn't understand a thing, so they we so focused on trying to get it that it overheated there puny little brains, making it oze out of there ears. This teacher was never caught doing this, so he taught it to other teachers, who understood it better. It has been passed on for years and years now, and the teachers havn't yet noticed that the brains of the students have been ozeing out of there ears. THE END. Baron Samedi
Algebra is easy. Personally, it would have been more productive if you had said why you found Algebra hard. Lame story. Algebra is supposed to be applicable to situations in life. Schoolwork is sometimes hard. Put up with it.
Soal
ok ppl, I wrote this story just for fun I love algebra to tell you the truth, I wrote this story to make ppl laugh, come on guys lighten up a little, laugh a bit, man tough crowd, let all those serious thoughts drift away, life is short and you only as old as ya feel. -Soal
John
The story wasn't written very well, but it seemed pretty accurate to me. All the classrooms in my school are carpeted, so we give the janitors quite a hard time trying to clean up the brains. ^_^ I myself don't get algebra a bit. Most subjects, even if they're hard for me, I can make good grades in if I try, but algebra just doesn't compute in my brain. Of course, the algebra that I'm taking is higher than my grade level (it was either that, or something lower than my grade level. I couldn't win). Oh well, I suppose I must endure. And Soal, you probably could've avoided the bickering by stating that you like algebra in the same post as the story.

RainbowChick
Funny story. I find algebra pretty easy but nevertheless, if that was true I'd be very mad at that certain teacher, lol. Might not be written very well but still amusing.
Soal
I know myself that it isn't writen very well, because I know I could do a better job than that, but my whole intention was to make something stupid, I am a writer as you can see, and I come up all sorts of neat things. Just wait and see guys this is only the beginning.
ChibiHorsewoman
I found Algebra relatively easy for a math class.Of course, then there was business math and that was easy because it was useful. Now Geometry, there's a stupid and pointless waste of a school book. Soal I think you should replace Algebra with Geometry and make the story make sense.
Guest ScirosDarkblade
Har. How old are you people? Algebra... that was 7th grade I believe... The story wasn't so bad (it's "ooze" with two 'o's by the way). Soal, would you say that it's the way that algebra was taught that's the problem, or is the subject complex for you? We had a very good textbook series all the way up through... precalc if I remember right, and it was written in such a way as to not require an actual teacher to communicate the material. It was all very straightforward. But, then again, my math teachers through all of school were awesome, so I'm sure that helped. You want to see poor math instructors, just wait until you get to college. My linear algebra professor was completely incompetent, as were my calculus professors. As far as geometry being a worthless subject, I completely disagree. It's an important foundation for numerous fields, including much of engineering. And it's freaking easy, for crying out loud. Just memorize formulas and terms and you're fine. Anyway, keep writing stories, Soal (just proofread them), and good luck with math. Sorry if I damaged anyone's fragile ego. Honestly, you're making more fuss about this then the author did... Looking at it from a story POV though, I can see how it could be funny, even though it feels a tad rushed. Oh, and Shippou, I don't need your pity. Pity is for the weak. ;) ~CrH~

I never had a use for geometry or calculus for that matter. Infact I think calculus is one of the main evil things of this world. Thanks to calculus I didn't make honor roll for a year. I'm not going into an engineering feild and I don't need to design baby bottles. I thought algebra was easy I could run circles around my husband with my math skills, but I think every day math is most useful. Okay I'll stop now, I really hate math...4x+5y=107 solve for x and y

Thanks, CHW, but I knew how old you were; you've mentioned it before on other threads and I remembered ;) . I was mostly wondering about Soal and the others (anyway I can just look at profiles if I feel like it I guess). But anyway I think math of most kinds is important general education, including calculus. Sure, you might not need to apply it in your profession, just like I don't have to apply U.S. history, or even say chemistry, in mine, but they are important subjects to become familiar with to be a well-rounded person. And you might not think about it, but later on when your kid is in high school and decides that he's going to go into a technical field and has to take calculus, you won't be able to help him if you never learned it. My dad has a Ph.D. in biology, but he never learned calculus and so wouldn't have been able to help me with my high school calculus homework (I didn't need help, but what if I did?) unless he sat down and learned the material right then. No knowledge is worthless, ever. I know you're not being too serious, but still, it's unfair to tell the kids here that are having trouble with even algebra that something like calculus is "evil" and not useful. DeathBug
I hate math. I hate it so much. I have never been good at it, and it has left a constant smudge on my GPA. If all math in the universe died, I'd be okay. That said, I don't mind algebra so much. I always seemed to be pretty good at it; I understood most of the concepts. A hundred and one different ways to find 'x'.... Imaginary numbers always blew my mind, though. I understood how they worked, but the concept always bothered me. It was like their existance proved mathmatical theory wrong somehow...
Xander Harris
Math is a pain in the butt. You have to work repetitive problems over and over and learn complex, irritating things that will never be useful in the rest of your life. That said, I am finishing up an Advance Math course right now. (I graduate in a couple more days) I'm glad I took Math in high school. It teaches you to do things that have no point, and to wrap your mind around tough concepts. It stretches your brain and teaches you work ethic. That said, I'm taking the easiest math course I can as soon as possible to get it out of the way in college :p Oh, and I laughed at the story. But maybe I am just easily amused... Gentle
Why do people dislike maths so much? That and reading are the most important part of your education. Without the simpliest knowledge of either one, you'd be stuck in this world as a bum. Unless of course by some known miracle you're honored and become celebrity one fine day which is a rare occasion, trust me. And really, algebra isn't even that hard. If I could learn it without even being taught, then someone who is should have no problem. But then of course people with slower brains might have to struggle. I took the SOL for it today and found it exceptionally easy. I spent most of the time playing around and not doing the actual thing until maybe an hour before it was time to finish and still beat more than half my peers. It's a shame really. People take everything for granted. Your taught different things for a reason and if it was too hard for you, you wouldn't be given it at that stage. All work issued is at the level of the student's mind. Nuff said.

(My final is on Friday). It sucks that I'm having to take it over again before being able to take intermediate algebra out there, but hey, it's extremely easy since I've already done pretty much everything in the class before. The fact that algebra is my favorite subject in school that I've taken so far also helped to curb my annoyance. 2x² + 3 = -5x Solve for x. ;)

I always had a natural ability with English; I hardly ever had to study, because English was very natural to me. But math was always an uphill battle; my brain simply isn't wired for math. lol That said, I can safely assure you that being good at math isn't the be-all and end-all. English is more important in daily life. Being able to communicate, especially in business, is critical. Good math skills are a fantastic tool, sure. But if worst comes to worst, use a calculator. Unfortunately if you're really bad with English...there isn't much in the way of a quick fix. Yumi
I use to have a natural ability for maths GSCE but i still hated it. Now I am really bad at it and I am also bad at english so where does thay leave me!!!! I think either you are more suited to science or english not just maths and english. I also think it can relate to gender. Most people in my 6th form who do A level maths are male and tests have shown that a woman is more likely to fail a maths test right before her period due her hormonal levels. (there are exceptions to the rule MOG!!) Maths is awful all you need is a calculator and a maths able friend and then you never need bother with it again! YAY! Anne
I really am bad at math, so i don't like. But it came down to how i learned it. My algebra teacher would yell and scream at us and tell us we are dumb. My geometry techer would come in high everyday and talk about is jazz club. So i really didn't learn anything in that one. My Algebra two class, was so confusing because i didn't get a good solid background before and when i went and ask for help the teacher told me "go ask someone else. Than my guidence consler (don't get me started on those) changed my schedual without my knowldege and pt me in trig. I almost died but i did achieve one good thing. I did a pic in all sin, cos, tan .. ect. of an angel. It came out great and took me a month to do it but it got me an A <((_^)>. The only A i ever got in a math class. I hat math and i don't understand it. As long as i can use the basics i'm good, i can even do percentages in my head up to $500 dollars but i also use to work in sales. I really do hate it but also you should really try and learn it. Unfortuntly you do sometimes need it. ~MEW~ <((_^)>

Maths is an intimidating subject; some areas of it are quite easy, and others are extremely uptight. Me, I'm a maths person, but that doesn't mean I'm poor at English either. I could study and study and study up to a degree that my maths and English are completely flawless, it definitely has nothing to do with 'luck'. Ultimately, your mother tongue is the absolute first step towards your education. I think most people are put off maths because of the impression given at first sight, seeing all those numbers is kind of scary in a way. But, that doesn't suggest that you're born with it. Everything requires hard work and practice, without it you won't succeed, period. Harsh fact of life my friends. There are situations where math is more important than English, too. I doubt you'll get far in Physics or Computer Science without it. Arguably, it's a fifty-fifty discussion, purely and simply based on your profession or course.
