James
The point I'm making is that in general daily life, English tends to be the more useful tool. No matter what career path you choose -- whether it relies heavily on math knowledge or not -- strong communication skills will be of great benefit to you. Obviously if you're wanting to do Physics or Computer Science, it's a given that you'll need strong math skill. But just as obviously, there are many people who won't be doing that as their career; particularly if they aren't good at math in the first place. So, I tend to find that math is something useful if you're deliberately entering a career that relies on it. But in general, in the world of business, strong communication is far more critical I think. In regard to being born with the ability...of course it's possible to pick up skills in a particular area, even if it's not something that you are naturally good with. I wasn't being so literal in what I was saying, really. I mean that if you don't have the natural abillity with numbers, it will be a lot harder for you. And if you find that it's too difficult, you shouldn't worry too much, because math, while important, is generally not as critical as English in my experience.
Guest ScirosDarkblade
Har. Having superb English skills is useful if you're in a management position or one where you have to talk to a lot of Americans. Otherwise, decent speaking skills are enough. Really. Every professor I've had in college has had much stronger math skills than English skills. Much stronger (I'm in Comp. Sci.). They all know just enough English to barely get their point across. I'd imagine the situation is similar in many colleges. (Of course I understand that such is not the case in English/philosophy/etc. departments.) Also, knowing as many immigrants as I do and what jobs they all have here in the U.S., I'll say that the "English is most important" statement doesn't apply to them in the least. Of course many of them already have higher educations, but the point is that other special skills are just as important. A company needs an expert metallurgist or entomologist or geologist, not an English speaker. So my point is that, really, unless you are planning on pursuing a career in something Humanities-oriented, English should not be as high a priority as whatever field you're going into. eleanor
I have no problem with algebra, but I hate, hate, HATE it that they judge if you should go into Algebra II Honors based on your geometry score. Geometry=almost not relation to algebra whatsoever...the only thing algebraic you really use is the x-y coordinate field and stupid equations 5x+3=9x+3. And it's stupid, you never use it again in your high school career...and not in your life either. Even our geometry teacher told us that he thought it was a bit stupid to make honors eigth grade students to take geometry. What the HECK does proving two triangle are congruent do for my math career. Nothing. It's easy enough, but it's so pointless it's not even funny.
Soal
*hits forehead* I do not dislike math, the whole point of the story was to have alittle fun and joke around with it a bit. You guys are way to serious about things, how many of you guys here have actually had fun? or laughed at something. I'v seen adults act better than most of you ppl. SuperSJ3
I don't know about the rest of ya'll but I have an imagination and laugh at just about everything. Anyway, I hate Algebra, Geometry, and Math in general, but I'm good in it so it's alright. And down here we have all of them put together in one class. Intergrated Math I,II, and III.
