While Square Enix announced almost all of its lineup prior to E3, its under-construction E3 display features one more game left to unveil. A rolling trailer features Samurai Legend Musashi, a PlayStation 2 sequel to the quirky PlayStation action-RPG Brave Fencer Musashi.

The PS2 sequel features a redesigned hero with baggy pants, a tight tank top, twin swords, and if you could imagine such after checking out the original Tetsuya Nomura-designed Musashi, even bigger hair. The 21st-century Musashi looks a little less traditional and a lot more attitudinal than his 32-bit ancestor.

His game looks a fair bit more impressive as well, with sharply outlined toon-shaded graphics accentuating Nomura's character designs (though he hasn't been officially confirmed as the artist behind the new game, his stamp is all over both the heroes and monsters). The trailer features many environments far larger than what we saw in the first Musashi, with more of a Jak II scale to the bigger areas. Musashi's battles include some cool feats of character animation, meanwhile, like an enemy suddenly transmuting to burning ash, which blows away leaving his skeleton behind.

We'll have more details on Samurai Legend Musashi from Square Enix's press conference later tonight. Look forward to it.
Sounds great. I'll post any new information in here later. Square's conference is in a bit, apparently.

Square-Enix have really taken an original approach with Brave Fencer Musashi by adding a more animated context to it, rather than the old traditional looking Samurai games where everyone sports different coloured kimonos and the same top-knots, heh.

I'm not expecting anything too serious; I can only guess the return of such enemies as plants, typically followed up by the end of level boss. Hopefully, some difficulty will be added to the puzzles this time round.

I'd anticipate this game to say the least, as BFM slightly appealed to me, but it's still too early to say anything yet.

Erm...

I have been waiting for a sequel to Brave Fencer Musashi since I first played it. (it was one of the first RPGs of that type that I had played, so that could attribute to it) I had no idea that they were making this up until now! Just like BlueYoshi mentioned, it's the originality of the... well, original that drew me in, and from what it looks like, this will be even better. I'm getting this game, as soon as it ships to the US, and only the worst review possible can convince me otherwise.

Or maybe I should wait and see...

Unfortunately these aren't the best shots in the world. I'm under the impression that the originals were quite small and IGN and Gamespot blew them up too large. Still, looks good.

Ok, well I just got this game the other day and I beat it already, so, that says something for its length and playtime lol. However, I didn't really mind this game. Its made by Square Enix and its pretty obvious as you play through. The battle system is almost identical to that of Kingdom Hearts and although it does become tedious, it's an overall solid system. They try to change it up a bit by offering numerous skills for Musashi to learn along the way. Theres different types of monsters and you're able to duplicate skills from each adding to your arsenal of techniques. Theres around 25 in total, including the defensive ones.

The whole point of the game is for you, Musashi, to aquire the Five Great Swords and save Princess Mycella to aid you in finding your way home. The Five Great Swords consist of the elements (wind, fire, earth, etc) which also spices up the fighting a bit with the magic techniques and such.

As terrible as it sounds, considering I liked the game, I hate Musashi lol. His character is annoying and the voice acting is probably the most annoying I've ever heard. Its sort of a love hate relationship. I hate a lot of the characters in the game and I love a lot of the characters in the game, theres really no gray area. Gandrake is the "bad guy" you always find in RPG's, and hes definitely my favorite character in the game. Although he becomes a bit jaded, he's a smart guy with a strong personality and amazing sword talent.

It took me around 20 hours to beat the game and about 25 to get everything. It's not an amazing game like you might have been expecting from that of Square Enix, but its a solid, fun way to spend your time. If you were a fan of Kingdom Hearts then you'll probably like this one as well. I give it an overall 6.5-7. Have any of you played it? If so, any thoughts?

I've not played it yet, myself, but it seems like most people were not very impressed with it, yourself included. I guess that's a sign to forget about it.

It's a shame too. I thought the original Playstation game was a total blast. One of Square's better action/adventure titles.

I read a biography on Miyamoto Musashi. Intersting guy. I think that a lot of anime uses him as a guideline for their samurai characters. He won his first duel against a ronin at the age of 13, using a staff to beat the guy to death. I loved his idea of doing whatever the fight calls for. Towards the end, he beat his opponents by blocking and dodging them until they gave up. That's true skill for you.
I played the game I'm near the end. It's a very good game. As you progress you can be as coniving as you want as you go through it. Every boss has an achiles heel that you can take advantage of.
Musashi is at no time in the game coniving or spiteful lol. The whole point of the game is to beat the bosses, they're bad, hence the fighting. You can't beat them without finding out how to first, and then playing against it. But this doesn't make him coniving, it makes him smart, and an even greater power for good, he is fighting evil you know.

The first game was definitely a blast and it overshadows this game entirely if you ask me. It's not by any means a good game in my book, I said it was "solid" because the story is sound, and for that I give them credit. However, the gameplay is tedious. The first move you duplicate is the sword combo you use, THE WHOLE GAME. Yes, you can aquire more skills and such, but they cannot be performed mid combo, and out of the 20-25 skills you can aquire, only 4 of them don't require MP when used. considering you start out with around 100 MP, and the average amount of MP per technique is 15-20, its hard to really string together rough attacks without using all your MP. The minigames are all the same, you just use different vehicles on each one lol. It even has the exact same biking one as FF7 where you use Cloud to knock enemies off their bikes.

Also, after beating the game you don't really get anything. You may play it over again in a harder mode, but nothing else. I gave it a 7 at most because I did like Kingdom Hearts, and they're incredibly similar. Square is capable of much better, however, and FF12 will blow this game out of the water.

I was expecting better from it...

I loved the original so much, three years later, I bought it again because the disc was stratched. It also had some of my favorite Video Game Music of all time...

Is the music still cool?

I borrowed this game from a friend about a month ago. The graphics are really cool, but the voiceovers and the lack of difficulty killed it to me. All you really needed to use was the regular attack combo to beat the enemies and bosses. Basically, I thought the game was cool at the beginning but by the end it was just annoying. Then again, what would you have expected from Square right before Final Fantasy XII? (Even though the game keeps getting delayed) Oh! And I'm still waiting for that Parasite Eve sequel! Didn't they promise something when the PS2 launched?

A conversation about Musashi, eh?

Well, I cannot personally say anything about the game, I haven't played it yet. However, I bought it for my best friend, and he wasn't all that thrilled. He said the first was way better (I loved the first as well) but this game wasn't horrible. He did say, though, that Musashi sounded like a boy "lost in puberty". Lol.

I still need to give the game a shot. Solely, of course, for the fact that it's Musashi, and that Square-Enix produced it. But if it is like Kingdom Hearts, and not that great, I'm just gonna wait for KH2 to come out. ^__^

So who out there has played the new Musashi game "Samurai Legend of Musashi" ? I just started playing it and think it's great. The graphics on it are alot like Tales of Symphonia and the game play is pretty awesome....so far i'm only like about half way thru but definetly a great game. It's not a sequel to Brave Fencer Musashi but more like an add on to the franchise.....It's been a long coming for another Mushashi game to come out.

The story of the game goes world in peril...hero summoned and can't return to his world til he saves this world and rescues the cute girl that summoned him. If you guy's like Rpg's i suggest this one...it's not your normal rpg tho. The battle system is free reign and there are many moves to learn by copying your enemy's movements and using it against them. You save various damsel's in destress and get cool swords with a secret power locked within them all....each power is needed from these swords to progress along in your journey. While going along the game you collect unique artifacts that help you with there ability's and other non artifact items that are just as helpfull....if you haven't played it you should. I'm sure any avid Rpg'er will enjoy it. Tell me what you people's think about it.
