Semjaza
The wild multiplayer action of the smash Nintendo 64 hit, Mario Tennis, returns with even more powerful shots and new, character-specific power-ups guaranteed to make for the craziest matches ever. Everyone's favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters are here! Donkey Kong and Bowser can hit insanely powerful Megaton Balls, finesse players like Shy Guy can use instant Tornado Returns and defensive masters like Luigi have all kinds of tricks in their bags. Players of all ages can pick up the game and instantly start whacking tennis balls around and yet a deep level of skill awaits those willing to master it. Build up more and more skill points as you play to use stronger and stronger shots with all kinds of spin.
I REALLY hope the release date on Nintendo's site is wrong. It says 2005, which I think is pretty freaking ridiculous. What is taking so long to make this game? I want it now :( I like the new themed courts... I'm just not sure what to think about all the crazy stuff going on in each screen. None of it really looks like normal tennis anymore heh. Shinmaru
The original Mario Tennis totally beat the crap out of Mario Golf, in my opinion, so you know I'm looking forward to this one. I'm fairly certain that this game won't be screwed up like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour was...there's no putting in tennis, so I'm sure that this will end up being one that's worth playing :p I'm really clamoring to take on some of those themed courts, too. Some of that stuff going on looks downright insane lol. Total tennis anarchy, baby.
Charles
Here's what I like: Mario Golf failed in my eyes because it tried too hard to be a legitimate golf game--it was too similar to the Hot Shots engine it was based on. The Mario themed courses only offered minor variations over what we would see in a typical Hot Shots game. Mario Tennis, at least, is trying to be its own animal. It's not trying to take itself seriously like Mario Golf did, and I think that will be the major drawing point to the game. Why make a Mario licensed sports game if you're not going to take advantage of the property to its fullest? By offering vast amounts of creativity and totally challenging the concept of tennis, this title has the potential to be a huge success. It's not like Mario Golf where there was little of anything significant present that wasn't featured in other golf games. When I see Mario using a mallet in a uniquely designed court and I'm not sure what's going on but I want to know, I get a good feeling. .
Guest ScirosDarkblade
I wasn't crazy about the N64 Mario Tennis, but I did like because it had Bowser and Shy-Guy. I totally love Shy-Guy. I was very upset he wasn't in Mario Kart: Double Dash. Anyway, if this game has Bowser and Shyguy I'll definitely buy it. If not then I'll have to think about it longer. But I am lreally ooking forward to it; it's the only true pick-up-and-play game that I enjoy. Intuitive two-button controls and nothing really tricky, meaning that even little kids that get dragged to our house by their parents will find something to actually play. Plus it's the only version of tennis I'm any good at :p .
Ryan
Those images of the courts look awesome. I hope it doesn't come out in 2005. I wouldn't want to wait that long. Hopefully it is sooner than expected.
Semjaza
Looks like this game is finally set for November. I guess it has taken so long because the first rendition of it was completely scrapped for the current version. Good enough for me. Here's some new screens:
BlueYoshi
Looks pretty cool. I was under the impression that people preferred to have a tad bit more realism in Mario Golf, regardless of its insane style. I doubt that would've made it any better, though. Gavin
Interesting... most interesting. Well I only ever had the chance to play this once over at a friend?s house so I never really have deep consideration to a sequel. I've never been the biggest fan of Nintendo's take on certain sports but I must admit that Mario Tennis was a hell of a lot of fun under the right circumstances. Overall I think this will be an interesting little game to keep and eye out for but there are a few games ahead of it on my "To Buy" list.
Shinmaru
The screens look very cool, and I'm hoping that Mario Tennis turns out well. I bought Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour a while back, and I was so unbelievably disappointed with the game. I'm really hoping that this game doesn't take the route of Mario Golf lol. Peach Dome looks pretty rockin', along with the 2D court. I'm also liking the different special hits that I've been seeing from the characters thus far. Zidargh
Mario Tennis was pretty rockin' on the N64, so I don't see any reason for why this game shouldn't be. I especially like the Mario Sunshine court. By the looks of things you're working against the clock or whatever to clear the courts of the slime by hitting the Shines. Perhaps if you hesitate too long, a Pirahna Plant begins to grow and then attacks you. Who knows? The graphics look typical of the usual GCN Mario engine (If you know what I mean), but it works. I just seriously hope they manage to use up enough space to make the audience 3D instead of 2D. That's a major gripe I have with spectators in games. :p
Brasil
Hopefully that POW block is hittable. I'd love to see some good ole fashioned POW earthquakes going on. Hell, I'm hoping all of those little 2D cretins can be hit.
BlueYoshi
Nintendo/Camelot would be crazy not to incorporate all those little 2D trademarks in some way or another.
The graphics look typical of the usual GCN Mario engine (If you know what I mean), but it works.
This is what scares me. The SMS engine looked very pretty indeed, but I didn't like it one bit, and it's the reason for my dislike of SMS (the controls aren't really that much of nuisance for me). Semjaza
I don't know why it'd scare anyone. This is Camelot, they're not going to use the engine that EAD's SMS did. If anything, it's likely based upon the Mario Golf engine, which would be fine by me because all that matters in terms of that is its graphics pushing capabilities. The game looks great graphically and what I've seen in motion is very fluid. I'd not worry about it in those aspects. As for the crowd, in larger stadiums it looks like they're 2D. However, it's not quite as bad since they seem to be high resolution and animated... my main problem with 2D crowds is that they usually look like a pile of vomit. That's not the case here. Smaller stadiums seem to feature fully 3D characters. BlueYoshi
I trust Camelot to make a good game out of Mario Tennis, as proved with the previous Golf and Tennis games in the franchise. You're right about the pushing power, but Tennis requires moving around and flexibility at the same time as inputing commands, as opposed to the limits of Mario Golf in those terms. I dunno, though, I'll have to wait and see, as always. Sorry to sound so negative.
James
Yeah, I doubt that they'd use the SMS engine for this game. As far as I know, Nintendo haven't used that particular engine for anything other than SMS. I'm not a tennis fan at all, and I would hate for this game to be realistic in terms of its representation of tennis. I'd find that incredibly boring. However, I love the fact that the game seems to combine certain realistic elements with totally crazy, fantasy elements. I am particularly fond of that old school Mario screenshot...that level looks like it could be wonderful. This is one of the Mario sports titles that I might actually buy. Controls themselves are not based on graphics engines at all. Even comparing layouts between courts and courses, there is an obvious size difference. This is not something I can see even being an issue. It's a game that can practically be played with just the A button and a joystick. Camelot is more than competant enough and I can't see Nintendo publishing a game that is that fundamentally flawed.
Noside
Wow those screens look downright incredible. It's definately jumped to number 1 on my to buy list, it looks like they'll be pulling everything out of the bag on this one. Even the bottom of the bag is getting grabbed with the 2d court. The prospects of this game just by looking at the screens are very high. All the Mario games have had a good streak of looking amazing, but I hope the playability will be good as well. Sunshine looked incredible, but I didn't want to play it after I beat it. Mario Kart was right on the mark, but Golf was a bit too much like Golf than a Mario game. N64's Tennis was great, so I hope this one's even better.
