Dan Rugh
I've been waiting for AonE to release episode 3 for a long time, too. I'm really hoping they didn't stop subbing it. Like many have stated, episode 2 wasn't as good as episode 1. Oniwakamaru reminded me of Jinenji from InuYasha a bit... another big ugly guy that everyone's afraid of, but it turns out he's got a bigger heart than them all. Eh. *waits impatiently* Edit: How strange. As soon as I finished posting here, I went to gotwoot.net and Samurai Champloo #3 was up. Nice. Okita
thanks for the information on Champloo, Hittokiri Zero, it sorta makes more sense now, and sorry i didn't mention this before but does anyone know how 'champloo' is meant to be pronounce? I thought at first that it would be like 'Shampoo' but then realize that Japanese phonetic does not have double 'o's that pronounce to 'u' sound and that the closest to double 'o' that I can think of is instances like Ho-oh, kyo-oh and Ookami, where the 'o' is stretched. So what how does the word 'champloo' sound? like a literal english pronouncement or following the Japanese phonetic?

If you're familiar with Japanese, you know that an N sound before a B, M, or P makes the sound of an M. So, then you have "champuruu" and pretty much everyone knows that Japanese doesn't have the L sound so they use an R for it instead. With that, I'd say the correct way to say Champloo would be: cham-ploo (CH sound - not SH, and the A pronounced like you would say it in "okitA." =P :) Hope that wasn't too much. lol EDIT: That katakana probably won't display on everyone's computers so I attached a jpg of how it's written for anyone overly interested. lol
Okita
thank you for enlightening me, the word now sound far more like Nihongo when you translate it. I've never study japanese, and my only source of the language is anime, so I wouldn't be too familiar with it's sentence structure (though I did understand all that you said). Now that I actually understand it's meaning and it's unique Okinawan origin and pronounciation I find myself more and more appreciative of the little unique flavour that anime contains! Guest Shikaku
Yeah Samurai Champloo is awesome. Great music, great art, great fights, great story, what else could u ask for? Everything you would expect from the makers of Cowboy Bebop and more. It's just too bad that there arent many people fansubbing it. I'm really lookin forward to seeing more of it. Hittokiri Zero
I just saw episode 3 (AnimeONE baby! I hope they don't take very long to translate episode 4...), and w00t w00t the scene with Jinn dressed as a girl... Was errr... interesting to say the least. Watching him "play" the shamisen was pretty funny too. I'm really looking forward to seeing the conclusion of the battle between Jinn and Mugen (whether they really battle at all that is ). There were some really funny parts in this one: Mugen biting on the crab, Jin dressed like a girl, and then him playing the shamisen like you said. I don't think they'll end up fighting since Fuu always stops them. Maybe they'll fight a little bit since she's trapped in that cage and can't intervene, but I'm sure they'll stop anyway. If you can remember from waaaaay back, AonE released 1 and 2 at the same time, so maybe 4 will be here very soon. I just hope they catch up. Dagger
I'm really interested finding out what other people think of episode 5. While I enjoyed it, the storyline is utterly random and bizarre. Once again, the screen time gets divided up quite nicely between the three main characters, this time focusing slightly more on Fuu than on Jin or Mugen. Mugen fans should have a blast watching him kick serious *** without so much as
drawing his katana,
and Jin also demonstrates that he's a very multi-talented type of guy. ;) ~Dagger~
Okita
I'm beginning to see a pattern that while quite nice might turn some people off. Like Cowboy Bebop before this, Champloo tends to be episodic in nature, every episode tends to have a miniature conclusion upon itself like bebop this, though the plot is more inclusive than bebop. I really like this approach as it allows the episode to be treated both individually and as a whole (series), the series' great strength lies in it's diverse plotline and strength of character (again very much like bebop). It would be interesting to see it's conclusion as Bebop's was breathtaking...
Dagger
Anime Forever has subbed up to episode 6, and Rofish released episode 7 a couple of days ago. The
gay Dutchman
just might be my favorite Watanabe character since Cowboy Bebop's lovely, lovely Gren. His story was told in such a way that it came across as being both poignant and hilariously weird. Almost every single one of the plot twists in episode 6 caught me by surprise; in contrast, I thought episode 7 ended up being much more predictable but was touching all the same.
Poor Fuu... so far, all of her love interests have been involved in illegal activities.
I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop in a while. However, it seems to me that Samurai Champloo is much, much more comedic (often to the point of seeming totally absurd). Although hints of a similar irreverence do show up in CB, Samurai Champloo carries this type of humor to a completely different level. ~Dagger~
Hittokiri Zero
yeah i love bebop... ive been hearing people raviung about champloo, bebop had funny scenes, but if this is funnier it must be worth a look.
Before I go on let me give you m4d pr0pz 4 ure spam natetron46. Basically what i'm getting at is if you don't have anything relevant to post about the topic I suggest not posting in the thread at all. Just some friendly advice to keep in mind for your future posts... ... Now as I was going to say >_>... While I have been in limbo for the past couple of days due to various other real life activities I finally got around to watching episode 6 of Samurai Champloo. While the
gay
dutchman was a nice comedic touch to the series, and overall I thought the episode was pretty funny in itself. Atleast up until this point I can say that Samurai Champloo is a very hyped up anime and has yet to live up to all the hype that was created before it was released. While I am very much enjoying this anime, the episodic nature of it is something that gets on my nerves from time to time (which is part of the reason why i'm not a big Cowboy Bebop fan). Luckily this is usually made up for by the fact that Samurai Champloo is less serious and more fun and games than Cowboy Bebop was. Meh more battles >_>'... That's what the series needs right about now... I also found it pretty hillarious how after eating all the food from the food contest Fuu's appearance was actually changed so that it looked fat, instead of her normal skinny self . Shiro_Ryuu
if its made by the creators of Cowboy Bebop, then it must be cool but I don't know about the hip-hop thing, not a big fan of hip-hop but I guess according to what I hear about this series, the anime seems to be worth it. I think Jin looks totally cool with the glasses and all.

Dan Rugh
AonE has released episodes 4 & 5 and I've watched 4 already. I wasn't expecting
Kawara, Nagatomi, and Ishimatsu to all die T_T.
Episode 5 should be done by early tomorrow morning. *kills dial-up* I was thinking about the Sunflower Samurai and wondered who he might be. Could he be Fuu's father or brother? Maybe someone who killed her family? The reason that she knows nothing about him but the way he smells is probably because (as they say in the deodorant commercial) "scent is the strongest sense tied to memory" and whatever happened most likely happened when she was very very young. So, who do you think the Sunflower Samurai is?
Dagger
Based on a brief flashback in a later episode, I'm inclined to think that the sunflower samurai is a
Kenshin-type wanderer. I can't recall exactly what Fuu said about her family (her mother died a year ago, and something else happened to her father), so if he is related to her, he's probably an older friend or brother. The fact that she doesn't seem to know the samurai's name makes me suspect she wasn't acquainted with him for very long before he unexpectedly left. She didn't look much younger in the flashback, after all. Had he told her his name or destination, surely she would have remembered.
~Dagger~
Hittokiri Zero
I believe
Fuu's father just left, and Fuu's mother died a year ago...
... But I was wondering exactly why are they looking for the Sunflower Samurai again o_O... Did they even talk about why yet? Or am I just getting ahead of myself :p. I think it's very possible that the Sunflower Samurai man could be Fuu's father, hence the fact he left and Fuu probably wants to figure out why... >_>' meh that's always one possibility. Dagger
AFF's version of episode 8 was released earlier today. It was interesting to learn more about
Jin's past,
although the information was delivered in such a bizarrely circuitous fashion that it didn't create as much of an impact as it could have. Aside from that single revelation, I thought this ended up being one of Champloo's weaker episodes (but so far, episode 2 continues to be my least favorite). On the other hand, the frequent
beat-boxing
was utterly priceless. ~Dagger~

Camlaren
I've seen... I believe 9 episodes of Champloo, only 3 of which were subbed ^__^; so to say that I know exactly what was going on while watching them would be an understatement of the year, but I did follow a fair amount... to be honest, I LOVE the first episode, it was amazing, the first episode was the only thing I have ever had my dad sit down and watch without want to leave in 1 minute or stop paying attention in 2, but with that amazing compliment, I have to say since then there has been little to no plot development, I guess that was the plan for the series, but I find it more of a let down, with such an amazing action pack first episodes, the rest are just an observing of their wanderings and want comes about from them.. no continual bad guy, no information on the sunflower guy... just episodes that have nothing to do with the previous one. Disappointing, BUT, even after all I've just said, I still downloaded all those raws, I find the series intriguing in an odd way... yet I'm still waiting for a plot x_x
natetron46
I have recently seen this, I decided to check it out because I love Bebop. This is really great stuff! I am a total fan. I do have a few questions though. Toshihiro Kawamoto is the creator of Bebop, and Im assuming he was the only creator on this anime, but has he done any others? I really like his stuff, and Im looking for more. Also, are there more than 9 episodes of this?
Dagger
Unless you discover otherwise, it's probably safe to assume that Samurai Champloo will be twenty-six episodes long. Only nine episodes have been fansubbed thus far; more, however, have aired and are available raw. The main man involved in the production of this series is Shinichiro Watanabe, who directed two shorts in The Animatrix ("Detective Story" and "Kid's Story") as well as Cowboy Bebop and the Cowboy Bebop movie. He has also been associated with Macross Plus, Vision of Escaflowne and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. ~Dagger~
Camlaren
Wow, I didn't even know 9 have been subbed, but yes, there are more than 9... I have episode 10 and 11's torrent files waititng for download =P
Dagger
Episode 10 is simply superb. While I was quite surprised that the scriptwriters chose to introduce the
concept of "ki,"
I think this is a good indication that Mugen's future opponents will continue to become more and more interesting. His battles against
Shouryuu
were just unbelievable--I love the visual effects the animators used to show them duking it out with
ki as well as ordinary weapons.
Those scenes looked classy and were fantastically well choreographed. Poor Jin, haha. Fuu and Mugen just walk all over him, and he takes it without a single complaint. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when Mugen made that comment about Jin acting like his wife. Overall, this is definitely one of the more serious and interesting episodes of the show. Samurai Champloo continues to borrow from older series in the genre while putting its own unique twist on things. Much as I like Mugen, I hope that at least one of the next few episodes focuses on Jin. I'm intrigued by what little we've been told about his past. ~Dagger~
Godelsensei
I've read absolutely nothing of this entire thread thus far, and therefore am most likely going to repeat what other people have said. However, seeing as I haven't posted here yet, and Skippedry ordered it, I will make a lengthy post about everything I love about Champloo. You still have time to take another shot of espresso; this could take a while. Let's start this off with a basic, well-known, obvious fact: any show that simultaneously involves two of the greatest things that have ever come into existance (J-hop and bloody fighting sequences, involving attractive ronin) automatically gets my approval. *Godel's stamp of approval* Throw in some
breakdancing, rapping minions, killer flying squirrels named Momo-chan (the Japanese equivalent of "Fluffy"), crazed clog-wearing Dutch guys whose presence make no sense whatsoever, a complete lack of funding, Kabuto Sumo, and
a nummy guy named Jin, and you've got something entirely better than both you and yours. Take a look at the show's introduction:
blood, fire, explosions, attack squirrels, and a nude Jin.
How is that anything but beyond even the most unreasonable of expectations? The characters are convincing in the fact that
yes! they actually do break the guy's fingers one by one until somebody shows up to fight for him and no! they don't fall in love with each other at first site and make a big deal about it, ruining the mood of the show.
That VJ sure must have had fun doing that particular episode. As for episode two? What do we have?
Nothing but the good old big-loveable-ogre-who-gets-killed-anyway and yet another scene of Jin unclothed. Only this time, it's accompanied by the most modest of innuendo. Hee.^^ We get a nice scene that reminds me of one of the Kenshin movies, what with the trees being cut apart and the whole "I am required to assasinate you," bit.
Our heroes then move on to
pretend to hit on each other in order to get away from their whiney charge, deal with irritatingly mis-informed Gai-Jin, play a life-or-death game of Japanese chess, become the subject of pornographic artwork, get shoved into a barrel, help free their object of affection from a Tea House, get stuck in a Tea House and blame it on one another, cross-dress, pawn off their glasses and swords, have eating contests, starve, get chased by tenku, read each other's diaries while they're in the bath, chase pickpockets, be mistaken for said pickpocket's girlfriend, and have fun with funny grass,
in no particular order. Not to mention all those other fantabulous things that happen throughout twelve short episodes. I can't wait to see what's coming next: knowing Watanabe-sensei (that is his name, right? _ _U) we're in for a dose of serious. I'm dying to find out what's happened to the guys in the past (although we know a touch about Jin by this point), and what exactly is up with that squirrel. As you can probably tell from the banner and avatar, I've developed a certain liking for one of the characters. *nosebleed* (All this, of course, is not to mention that Jin x Mugen has become one of my favourite slashy couples. xP) Read Skip's last post xD:
I loved the "Stop trying to be my wife!" part. You read the parenthesis. xP As I have said to you before, I adored episode eleven. It contained that delicate mix of blood and cuteness that makes me blush.^.^ The Kabuto Sumo was a nice touch, too. I was practically weeping when Jin let them beat him up like that. I was going, "No!!! Jin-kun!!! Beat them up! Get up, you fool! Nooooo!!!!"
