jean-san, I'm assuming that you should edit your post instead of making another one, correcting your mistake. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed CNs premiere of Samurai Champloo. So, say, unique. Granted, I found it a bit weird that Hip-Hop was used in such a setting - But it blended in together seamlessly. And, as many others have said, Mugen is strongly reminiscent of Spike. Honestly, I could've sworn they had the same voice actor.

Still, though, I was surprised. I was half-expecting it to suck - Where that came from, i don't have much of a clue. But, in spite of that, I was wrong. Really Wrong.

Hopefully, the series won?t drag on as it goes. All I know is that I?m going to see it for a long while. =]

That's because
they do. It's the same actor, working under two different pseudonyms. There are a number of reasons that VAs do this, but generally it has to do with trying to get around union-related restrictions; it's therefore considered somewhat impolite to publicly "out" a VA, although in most cases the roles he/she takes under an alternate name are pretty much an open secret.
Blacking that out was a little unnecessary, haha. What can I say? I just love spoiler tags, I guess. :animesmil

I'm glad that people enjoyed the first episode of Samurai Champloo. It's actually one of the better first episodes I've seen, although personally I think it takes the show a little while to deliver on its potential. But the pacing of the beginning episode is just delightful, and it does such a great job of introducing the main trio.

I was excited to see the first episode, and when I did, all my dreams came true! I loved it! Mugen (who has an uncanny resemblance to Spike Spiegel in more than just his voice) instantly took the role of my favorite character. Not only does his sword look awsome, but his fighting style has gotta be the coolest thing I've seen in anime since Haruko fighting with a Rickenbacker Bass in FLCL. Especially when
he was about to be executed and he just spun out and started breaking, all the while kicking the weapons out of the hands of the executioners!
That was sweet! I also noticed how ruthless he is, while still maintaining his floaty, light-hearted attitude (case in point being his counting a man's finger's by breaking them backwards). He's a real neat person. Also, I love his form of speech. ("Forget all the formal crap, coming at me one on one... I'll take all you b*tches on!")

Jin is pretty cool too. He plays as a foil to the impulsive, wild fighter that is Mugen, by being cool, calm, and formal. I love the music too! Oh my Lord, the Music! I taped the episode and watched the beggining theme sequence about ten times, thats how much I loved it!

I can't wait for the next episode!

P.S.- The show is hilarious too!

Mugen: "I had a dream that I was surrounded by fire..."

Jin: "That wasn't a dream..."

Mugen: "So, you really were in a bathtub with your 'thing' hanging out?"

Jin: "Now THAT was a dream..."

When I first watched it last Saturday, I was psyched to the max about it. Just seeing the previews sent shivers up my spine. After I watched it, I was amazed at the fact that this show has nothng to do with 'special powers' or mechas or anything of that sort, yet it caught my eye instantly and I fell in love with it. I promise you that this show will be a major hit here, especially with the violence (BLOOD!), cursing (Mugen: "Kiss my a**."), and the sheer animation. The sword fight was the best I've seen, besting with those in the new Star Wars movies and probably in the upcoming 'Revenge of The Sith'. If anymore of these battle scenes are as good or greater, holy hell!

The battle scenes are solid throughout, but the most memorable ones come toward the very end of the series (which makes sense: save the best for last, and all that jazz). Personally I thought Mugen's fight with
Sara
and Jin's fight with
the God's Hand swordsman, Kariya (almost wrote "The Hand of God" there... I've been watching way too much Hikaru no Go lately, haha)
basically owned everything else in the series--which is saying a lot, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Yeah i saw the first eposdie in english the other night. it was awsome, it reminded me of Ninja Scroll. it was funny also, and what really surprise me is that Adult Swim is letting a show with so much blood and cusing in it on the show. i am so happy finially we are getting somewhere in America with all the good shows :catgirl:

So what did you all think of episode 2? It's probably one of my least favorite episodes in the entire show, for various reasons. But I do like how it obliquely ties into the first episode, and the fact that Mugen actually
kills the stereotypical deformed guy. At least Watanabe didn't go for a neat, happy ending.
Yeah, episode 2 of Champloo reminds me of the half-demon that was being terrorized in Inuyasha. Even though the episode contained the common monster looking with a kind heart character, the ending was kind of nice. You know, the scene where the guy told Fuu that he protected her because "she wasn't afraid" of him. Plus, the whole scene where the poisoned Mugen was getting knocked around by the so-called monster was kind of priceless. xD

I have seen all 26 episodes of this great show. One of the best dubs I have seen ever, yep I said it ever. The action is great and the samurai action truly lives up to the hype everyone gave this show.

Mugen's voice is Spikes just to let you guys know.

I like Jin and Mugen, I like Jin a little more becasue he fights with style, if he wants to kill someone he kills that someone in a stylish way, not like Mugen who goes all-out and jsut wants the victim dead, which is still damn cool though.

Everyone should give Shichiro Wantanbee a clap in your posts. I don't want to forget this but there is going to be a second season of Samuai Champloo, your tastes will be feed. :animesigh

I actually liked the second episode, contrary to what others say. I thought the fight between Jin and the Assassin was pretty cool. And their meeting at the hot spring was hilarious. I usually don't laugh out loud at stuff, but that got me.

Assassin: "However... it is said that a male fire fly sometimes attracts another male..."
*Glares at Jin*
Jin: "... Time to go..."

That was good stuff. The fight was, as I said, pretty easy to look at. Very smooth, fast paced. I didn't expect the guy to actually match Jin, but I was wrong. Also, getting to see the tail-chasing side of Mugen was pretty funny. I think the episode was aimed more at humor and resolving the whole Ryojiro arc.

Another funny moment...

Fu: "Okay... on three were gonna take out everything we got, even our secret stash, okay? 1.... 2... 3!" *Pulls out two coins.

Jin: *Pulls out three coins*

Mugen: *Pulls out two acorns...*

Okay, so I'm a bit late, but I managed to catch the second episode. And let me say, I'm impressed. A lot of anime that had come out recently has just had ****** animation, so this was a really nice change. Anyway, as others have said, this seems to be a nice blend of Kenshin and Bebop, but with its own elements as well. It seems a little more humor focused than either anime, while still maintaining a serious attitude when it needs one.

I also liked Dag's comparison of Mugen and Jin as a split of Spike - very accurate, I think. But, at the same time, both Jin and Mugen have their personalities exaggerated somewhat (the wildness of Mugen and quietness of Jin), and have their own quirks. Jin seems more antisocial, and distant.

I confess, Jin is definitely my favorite character. There are so many wild characters out there that are the center of attention of an anime show, that it's getting pretty old. Don't get me wrong - I think Mugen's great and brings his own to the table (As Dagger pointed out - episode II hardly had the cliche happy ending), but Jin seems a little farther from the cliche 'quiet dude with long black hair and glasses'.

Yea. Anyway. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this!

Maybe I'll just move in with Dagger or something. Then I'll never have to wait to see an anime ever again. ;)

-Karma

EDIT: Not sure how I feel about the hip hop aspect of this anime yet...it really could go either way. If they emphasize it too much, I'm probably not going to like it, but if it's there enough to be an influence, but still is toned down and diversified by other music styles (like they did in bebop), it could be really awesome.

If you're referring to the opening theme. the song is called "Battlecry" and it's performed by the Nujabes & Fat Jon, if that helps your search at all i'd rather not post a link of any kind.

Anyways i caught the second ep of Samurai Champloo earlier today on adult swim, i didnt even know it had started airing on TV yet so it was kinda a nice surprise. I will never watch an anime with the english dub by choice when watching anime off a dvd so this gave me a chance to hear the dub. All of the voice actors seemed to do a pretty good job tho i didn't really like Fuu's voice actress (mainly because no one can replace Kawasumi Ayako....ever!) and Mugen's voice doesn't have the same bite that it does with it's japanese counterpart, but all in all a pretty good dub.

This is a great anime and I'm happy it's come to the states and that it's on AS. The fights are great and sorta seem realistic in a way, heh. The chemistry between Jin, Mugen, and Fuu is great. There are so many good episodes in this series, I can only think of 1 I didn't like. Cough
Zombies, and that's only cause the next ep. made completely no notice of it at all.
The best ep. has got to be
23, BASEBALL!, I'm really curious how the conversation between the Americans and Japanese will work. It was one last fun time, right before things got super serious with the final three episodes.
Jin's my fav, he's just so cool, but the best character outside of the trio has got to be
The detective, unfortunately I forgot his name.
Something I'm really curious about, where did you get the info about there being another season coming Jin? I'm curious and wanna read the source.
The ending was perfect, but I wouldn't mind seeing them on another adventure, heh.
*Clap*

Unfortunately for me, its seems I'm left out of the loop, because I've only been able to watch Samuri Champloo on Adult Swim, and this coming Saturday will be the third episode. But don't try and point out a place where I can download the episodes, because my computer is obsolete verging on ancient. I hope to get a new one soon.
As for the show, its very good, the charactor combinations are funny
(when Mugen said that he would dispatch of all the people in the restraunt for 50 dumplings, and when he later miscalculated his math, I couldn't help but laugh
. The begining theme song is pretty good, but I like the show more than the song. Alot more.
Anyway, it seems like its going to be a succesfull anime. Or is it already done, and I was correct in assuming that I'm behind the times?

It's not really that you're "out of the loop" or anything. This thread had been dead for a long time before Champloo started airing on Adult Swim, so you can safely assume that many of the people who post here regularly had not previously seen the series.

After further investigation, season two is episodes 18-26. So if there was a new season coming it would have to be the 3rd season. How unfortunate, but I'm okay with it,heh.
With the way things went, a movie or OAV would be nice, especially a Movie.
Finishing up volume 3 reminded me just how much I love episode 11. Personally, I found it to be the first episode in which the emotional impact of the featured standalone story really outweighed the show's heavy emphasis on style and quick, quirky details. Also, it's the first Jin-centric episode (if I remember correctly), which makes it a breath of fresh air after so many episodes that focus mainly on Mugen.
