May 14, 2004 - At E3 this year, we were treated to an eight PS2 LAN setup at the LucasArts booth where we got some hands-on time with the multiplayer side of the game. As you probably already know by now, Battlefront is similar to Battlefield 1942, only set in the Star Wars universe. The game takes place in both classic and new Star Wars settings, ranging from Tatooine to Endor to Naboo.

The first map we played was Endor, home of the Ewoks. We chose to play as an Imperial scout going up against the rebel scum, so we hopped into an AT-ST and started blasting all of the rebels we could see. We also had to contend with the Ewoks on the map, who had set up various traps for us, such as huge swinging logs to take out our AT-STs just like from the movies. While the game is mainly team-based, you will get some NPC assistance (or, depending on which side you're on, resistance) on some maps. For example, the Ewoks will help the rebels on Endor, the Gungans will support against the Trade Federation on Naboo, and the Tuskan Raiders on Tatooine will try and kill anything that moves.

The next map we played was the frozen wasteland Hoth. We decided to take the high road and join the rebel side this time. We knew it was coming, but it was still an impressive site to witness as the Imperial forces started coming toward our base in AT-ATs. Being foolhardy (or just a fool), I chose to be a pilot and told the guy playing at the station next to me to hop in the back seat of my snowspeeder. We took off to try and take out the incoming walkers. We got to the AT-ATs in one piece and I told the tow gunner to let it rip. He got a direct hit and I started turning to wrap the cable around the legs, but I got a little too excited and rammed the snowspeeder into the ground. Luckily as a pilot my character can survive vehicle crashes, but my tow gunner was toast. Sorry, dude.

Map three was Kamino, the water planet from Episode II where the Jango clones were being created. This time it was droids versus clones. Taking the side of the droids, I chose a heavy battle droid and, shifting to my ball form, rolled my way down to where the action was. The heavy battle droid is equipped with a powerful blaster gun which makes good for the killing, but the heavy droid is also very slow and a prime target for all those fast clone troopers.

While we were only playing four on four today, Battlefront will support up to 64 players online on the PC, with 16 players supported on the consoles, or 32 over a LAN. Among the multiplayer types, expect team deathmatch action, as well as a number of objective-based multiplayer maps where one side may have to protect a base while another tries to destroy it.

Expect to be playing Star Wars: Battlefront yourself when it's released for the PC, PS2 and Xbox on the same day as the trilogy DVD set: September 21, 2004.
Some images:

I've been following this game for a while now, and it's sounding better and better. Some of these screenshots are very nice. I can't wait to play it. I love the body physics in there, especially the ones on Naboo.

I've been following this as well. Sadly, I run on 56k and don't like the lag I cause other players so I don't play games online anymore. But there is the ol' LAN center down the street. :D

I'm excited because there are NO JEDI! (well Vader is in the game if you play as the Empire...) Don't get me wrong, Jedi are cool and all but I'm tired of people treating them like gods every ten seconds. The Dark Forces series really brought out how cool it would be to be a Jedi and Knights of the Old Republic gave us an awesome prequel.... but just leave the Jedi in those games.

I heard you can call in a oribital bombardment from a Star Destroyer if you control the map long enough... that should be a sight to behold. "DIE REBEL SCUM!"

So far only the online battle mode, or Skirmish, is really appealing to me, nothing else.

The Star Wars franchise is pretty large, and many of the games aren't really all that great. Bounty Hunter and Jedi Outcast, for example. Third person mode was pretty poor in that aspect, LucasArts would have to work harder if they hope to accomplish more in the games market--especially with Halo 2 and MP2 coming along.

I'm not too sure on the Conquest Mode though, it doesn't reflect Skirmish very much, meaning you will have to go online to obtain the cream of the crop. Instead, LucasArts has taken a more strategic approach to the game, similar to that of Front Mission, which, to be fair, I'd prefer KOTOR if I was heading in that direction.

On a side note, the graphical content looks really cool, they've really captured the terrain of the environments and the lighting effects are pretty impressive. Those Snow Troopers must be as cheap as hell, I can hardly see 'em!

Great game! Has many of the more famous battle such as the Echo Base battle, and the battle on Endor. Even some battle from Yavin 4!
Great thing is that you can choose between the invincible Imperials or the weak Rebels...oh and the dumb Sepratists and idiotic Clone Troops...That aside the game awesome! Some battles you can fight and turn the tide, making the outcome in your favor. What if the Rebels hadn't been able to stop the Imperials from getting to the Shield Generator on Endor? You'll be able to find out! As well as some great modes like Galactic Conquest mode where you take either the Seperatist, Clones, Imperials, or Rebels on a Galaxy Conquest! You choose a world and on each world there are two battles to be fougt. Win them both and the world is yours along with an added bonus. You can get Vader, or Luke or other famous characters on your side to help you crush the enemy. Coolest thing is...You can pilot ANY vehicle you see! Are you a Rebel and you got the craving to take out some Hoth Stormtroopers in a massive AT-AT? Go ahead! But good luck getting into one, it has to be empty!
Anyways, there is more to come I'll keep everyone updated!

Right, I may sound a little stupid here, but this is going to be the decider for if I want to buy this game.

Is it possible to still enjoy it quite a bit when playing it offline?

This is because of the fact that I do not have the right internet connection for XBOX Live, and so I won't be able to take advantage of the online element. So, someone answer the question, lol.

Many thanks.

YES. Dear God, yes.

And just so I don't spam, lol, I had a chance to play the Demo of it included with the OT DVD set, and I must have burned about 2 hours playing it. You only get one level in the Demo, Endor, but it's fun as hell. There's a Co-Op mode in there, I believe, and a Counter-Op mode seems likely, so playing it Offline is peachy keen. ^_^

Interesting, most interesting.

To be honest I'm probably not going to buy this game, usually I'd be one of the first to pick up a good Star Wars game but this seems to be pitched at guys with a far faster internet connection than my own snail paced 26.6 connection. Now I admit the screenshots look nice, though to be honest it does look slightly grainy in parts to me. I know Alex has said that the game does have a good single player mode but I still get the feeling it's geared to be far more enjoyable in a multi-player experience.

Woah now hold on Wingnut Jedi Outcast was one hell of a game and really did justice compared to some of the previous crap that LucasArts has stuck it's name to. Jedi Outcast had it's faults like any other game however the sheer playability of the game after the first five or six levels makes up for some early set backs.

Well I just got the game today, and it's pretty damn cool.

I've only played the Battle of Naboo and the Naboo Palace scenarios. I won the Battle of Naboo without having to take out those Fambaa Shield Generators, but you seriously need to gain the control points when as the droids for the second level. It's damn hard lol.

Eh, not much to say, but you were right about offline being really good. I may get Live just for this one, I'm not too sure.

The game is really cool, I have to say. I'm glad that you don't need online to play it (I don't have online in my backwater little town.) It does take a little while before you realize that it, much like the battlefield series, is not a run-and-gun first/third person shooter. You need some tactics, you need to actually think. But to get back to the praise...

I really like Battlefront. Still, the A.I. can be a little bit stupid at times, but for the most part, they are really smart and almost viscerally hard to a beginner. I'll admit, Zidargh, it has one heck of a steep learning curve, I'm still not very good at it lol. Also, the ships are a little hard to pilot. The graphics are also really good, especially on the X-box. The gameplay is also really fun, the instant action alone is really satisfying. So all in all, I would recommend this game.

My brother got this last night for his birthday. The PS2 version. I saw them playing this today and my first reaction was that in appearance, it's quite similiar to Clone Wars... a decent, but just plain average title.

I watched them play a bit more of it, however, and it's obvious just from that that this is on another level in many ways. The presentation is far more interesting and the game itself looked very cool. It kind of reminded me of an action-based real time strategy game in some ways, which is kind of neat.

I'm most impressed by how damn nice it looks on PS2. I don't recall any other PS2 games offhand that have grass effects like this.

That's probably it then. I never played the game long enough to get to the parts that you refer to as good. It must be me going wild on my rough first impressions.

Hmm well there might be some personal bias in my impression of the game because Jedi Outcast was the first game I ever had on my Gamecube, and so I may give it higher praise than it's due. To be honest though I really to think it's a great game and once you get your lightsaber and a few high level Force powers you really can have a lot a fun.

What do you think of this game?

I really like this game. I've played for about 3 months and have beaten easy and medium, but am stuck on hoth and geonosis on hard. I'm now convinced that they are impossible. Not 5 minutes ago, I fought Geonosis and got 124 kills. That's half the enemy, and I still lost by 9. I always lose Hoth by about 140, so I tried a new strategy: Take all the bases, then take out the AT-AT's. Well, as it turns out, the AT-AT's respawn with men in them, as automatic bases. I'm near giving up, but hopefully geonosis will be more forgiving tomorrow.
