...the three saddest songs you've ever heard.

The title says it all, What are three songs you've heard and made you cry? Or are so sad when you get some of your moods you skip them completely? What are they and why?

My three picks:

1.) Dixie Chicks-Travelin' Soldier- I cried the first time I heard this song. I tried to explain to Lincoln how sad it was, but he was upset that he was lost in Watertown. Then the second time I listened to it I cried again. After that I started skipping the thrid track on the Home CD for a while. Not because I didn't like the song, but because it was just so touching. This kid who doesn't have a family goes to Vietnam and dies and nobody but a young girl he met before he left is there to morn him. Excuse me, i need a tissue.

2.) Reba McIntyre-Forever Love-It may not be the song, but the way they did the pictures when I saw her in concert back in August 2001. They had these large screens with footage of families reuniting and at the end there was a picture of this guy standing at the Vietnam Memorial with his head down. That could be why I cried when I heard it the next few times.

3.) Tim McGraw-Don't take the Girl- Starts out like any average country song. A boy is going fishing with his dad and his dad invites this neighborhood girl to go along and the boy doesn't want her to come. In the end the girl dies in childbirth.

Okay, there's mine, Funny coincidence that they're all country ne?

What makes me cry when I hear a sad song is when I can relate to them. There are lots of sad songs out there but I don't have the emotional attachment to them like others do. I can understand why it is sad, but it just doesn't strike a chord with me. Now, on to my list of songs.

"Footsteps" by Pearl Jam. The first time I heard this song is just gave me that sad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I love Eddie Vedder's voice and was a total rabid Pearl Jam fan in the early 90's. "Black" is another of their songs that makes me sad, but not as sad as "Footsteps". The feeling of being completely hurt by someone you loved and being really bitter about it just spoke to me while I was going through my teenage years.

"Adam's Song" by Blink 182. This song reminds me of my friend Bryan. Many of the lyrics are perfect. Bryan and I had gone on tour with a Drum and Bugle Corps and one of the things when you are on tour is you can't wait to get home. He died a few years ago. I miss him so much when ever I hear this song it makes me think of him and it makes me cry.

"The Dance" by Garth Brooks. This song was one that my friends and I listened too during the time of Bryan's death. Even though we are sad he is gone we wouldn't want to give up the good times to avoid the pain. On the same note of that the song Trisha Yearwood's song "I would have loved you anyway" is another song that makes me think of Bryan and makes me cry. I really miss him.

Wow, this thread was very heavy. Now I feel like listening to those songs. There is just something great about a song that can change your feelings. I think it is the mark of a really good song.

Well, to tell you the truth I personally try to find depressing songs to listen too. Just because they in essence seem to turn out quite amazing and it's why I love them so much, they just appeal to me more. Though out of all the ones I've found only a few make me depressed in some way, not all out sad though.

These are the top 5 depressing songs of mine in descending order.

5. Johnny Cash - Hurt; The cover to the Nine Inch Nails song. Yes I admit Trent Reznor did an amazing job with this song there's no hiding that. But in my own personal veiw, it should have been an old, old man ready for when his time struck that should be singing it and that's what we got. In a way it's very heavy song, the video just adds to this argument. It actually makes it much more sad and the reminiscence of his life in the background of the song just grabs you until the end of the song. It's really a sad song.

4. Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer; I don't listen to Ozzy as much as I did a few years ago, I mean he's great but the only song that's caught my attention of right now is Dreamer. The lyrics just hit me deep and the whole way the track is played just is really deep and depressing to me. There isn't much else to say, but it's a great song.

3. My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel; This song portrays the death of a mans beloved. It's cliche the idea at first I admit, but the whole image and lyrics that are reperesented in this song are just meticulously slow and an abundance of depressing chords played through out. The band is in the doom-metal genre so I expected no less though, especially when the violins started playing.

2. The Cure - Pornography; Now here is an unique well written song by Robert Smith. This one I can say is truly one of his depressing songs. Infact the whole album as a whole was a depressing album. There was not one song that was happy in any way and I think for some of the lyrics may of been a little ahead of their time. Though I'm basing that of assumption considering I wasn't alive in that time era. It's very good cd and an amazing and sad song. Btw here was some of the lyrics from this song as an example.
One more day like today and I'll kill you
A desire for flesh
And real blood
I'll watch you drown in the shower
Pushing my life through your open eyes

1. Glen Phillips - Back On My Feet; This song, this song right here just is amazingly well done and in my own opinion it is depressing. Yet the all around lyrics don't suggest it as being a sad song. It's still played that way though and it is about a man that has been beating down, not litterally but by life, and then picking himself right back up. The first time I heard it I was amazed by it, but not everyone will think the same way, some may find it boring even. It really, REALLY depends on what type of music you listen too. But this isn't Country though. It's the one song I really recommend downloading if you can out of all of these.

I remember that song from long ago. The lyrics were quite powerful in their simplicity.

The song that makes me cry is the little music box in this dinosaur doll I have that my dad got for me when I was born. Unfortunately the music box within is in bad shape and doesn't play very well anymore.

I could probably cry to any sad song, given the correct inspiration to do so. I don't have any favorites, so to speak. Usually lyrics don't have an influence on how I perceive the song, so it's mostly in the expression of the vocals and instruments.

Any and all tracks from The Last Samurai Soundtrack makes my eyes tear up.
Especially the one that is played during the final battle, where you know the music stops and you hear nothing but the machine gun, then the music softly returns.
In combination with the memory of that scene, it makes the listen ever so powerful. songs that have particularly loaded memories behind them usually trigger stuff like that. New Found Glory's "The Story So Far" and Coldplay's "The Scientist" come to mind pretty quickly.

then there are some songs that I tear up at that are extremely ridiculous -- usually older songs that my dad listens to all the time. there's this one song about someone named Shannon and how she ran away and probably drifted out to sea; it ended up talking about a dog. isn't that great? and since then, I get this silly image of a dog (think My Dog Skip) in the middle of the ocean about to drown out there all alone. the thought is actually kinda sad, and then I end up laughing at myself while trying to remain nonchalant. nothin' quite like it. :wigout:

I've never cried due to a song. However, there are some that I consider to be incredibly sad. Two of my picks are entire albums, but I still start with the first which is just a single song.

Conversation Piece by David Bowie. Specifcally the new version of it off of the bonus disc included with some copies of Heathen. One of the saddest songs I've listened to in general and it's only added to thanks to Bowie's melancholy vocals. Strongly encourage people to hunt this out and listen to it.

The Bloodflowers LP by The Cure is also incredibly depressing. There's some stand-out songs, but it's only eight tracks (some are over ten minutes long). It mostly seems to deal with lost loves and life's regrets and I imagine everyone can relate to that in some way. Playing it all the way through makes it all the more obvious.

Beck's Sea Change LP is possibly the most sad thing I've ever listened to in my life. There really isn't the same sense of hope on this CD that is present in some of Bloodflowers' songs. Apparently he wrote it after breaking up with his long-time girlfriend. It shows heh.

I am in agreeance. I cry everytime i hear that song. All the ones you mentioned, CHW, I love to death.

SOngs that make me cry:

1.Jimmy Wayne - I Love You This Much This song has a powerful meaning to me and my BFFL, Alia. Her dad died when she was seven in a car crash, so any song that involves dads makes her cry. This one very much made me cry, because my mom when through a type of life like this.

2. Billy Currington ? Walk A Little Straighter This one is much like the first, only for my mom, this was exactly her life. My grandpa is still alive, but he keeps almost dying. She broke down in the kitchen after hearing this.

3. Me and Emily I can?t remember who its by, but that song is very emotional. I cried for so long afterwards?

4. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee ? Indigo Girls This song is very? emotional. Its about the Native Americans. I am very familiar with a lot of Indigo Girls music, but this one is beautiful. Some of the lyrics go like this:

Indian legislation's on the desk of a do-right Congressman
He don't know much about the issues
So he picks up the phone and calls the senator out in Indian Country
A darling of the energy companies ripping off what's left
Of the reservation

Some more go like this(same song):

My girlfriend Anna Mae talked about uranium
Her head was full of bullets and her body dumped
The FBI cut off her hand and told us she died of exposure (yeah right)
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee

5. Concrete Angel - Martina McBride I love it. Very expressive, and shows people the real side to life. Bad things do happen... same as kenshinbabe...
Beautiful songs. Most of mine are country, too.

Only a few songs can make me cry. Mostly movies do it for me.

Concrete Angel-I forget who sang it, it think it was Martina MicBride, or someone like that. The song itself made me cry, but then I saw the music video and I was bawling for days.

Where Were You-I forget who wrote this song too, but after 9/11, he made it. The first time I heard it on the radio,I was crying silently in the backseat so that my parents didn't hear me and make fun of me.

That's about it,folks!!

I absolutely HATE this song. Yeah, it's sad, but it is so stupid because it got so popular and it was all I heard when I was a kid. Whenever someone was asked what their favorite song was, that one ALWAYS popped up. And seeing as how I knew the song by heart and didn't even LISTEN to country music, I was deeply disturbed. My loathing goes pretty deep. There may be some hidden memory connected to it as well, but I seem to have forgotten. Maybe I WANTED to forget. ^_^;

Anywho, songs that make me cry...Well, I've got a few that I listen to when I pretty upset. My two Pearl Jam songs are "Given to Fly" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town." Those songs aren't really slow and melancholy, but they just hit me hard everytime. Most Smashing Pumpkins songs also get to me because of a lot of things in my past that are connected to them. Whenever I am REALLY sad, I put "Aeroplane Flies High" on repeat and let myself fall asleep listening to it. All APC songs from Mer de Noms are candidates, depending on my mood.

And here, to get cheesy, I'll let you in on the songs that can REALLY get the tears flowing. There are two hymns that we sing at church (I'm LDS in case you don't know) that I really like, and they are I Am a Child of God and Families Can Be Together Forever. I can't even sing these songs to myself without crying. Anywho. ^_^;
It doesnt make me cry but The Reason by Hoobastank really gets me into deep thoughts.
That is a great song. I've actually just recently heard a bit of their music.

Here's my list.
Metallica- The Unforgiven II
I love it. Whenever I'm down about somethin', this song just adds to my mood, brings back alot of old memories I have. Whenever I'm angry or pissed off at someone, this music assures me that I'm right and the idiot I'm pissed at is completely wrong.

The Offspring- Gone Away
The sound, the picture, the video-clip, the mood, all in one. I love this song, mainly because of its sound. But it always adds to the depressing mood I tend to get into every now and then. It's attached to old memories.

Brian Adams- Right Here Waiting
I can't tell you much I can relate to this song. It's almost impossible. I love it so much.

DJ Sammy- The Boys Of Summer or The Ataris- The Boys Of Summer
The Ataris version of this song is great for me, as it's got the heavy rock sound to it. The DJ Sammy version, has the bass that I can never go without. Both versions are awesome to me.

The DJ Sammy version I heard a heap when I was up on the coast for a holiday. I was in a sort of depression state then, and was mixed up with one girl, aswell. Whenever I hear this song, I always wish I was back up there on the coast, at the same place. I don't know why. I always feel real down when I listen to this song.

Everlast- What It's Like
The only not-rock song I am really attached to. This song always brings back memories of a while back.

I always get images of the area around the house I grew up in, in the rough part of my town. I always get a vivid picture of me walking down the footpath with a friend (I don't know who), the sun setting behind our backs, me holding a basketball. I'm pretty young in that picture, as I feel, and it seems to be late in the afternoon... I dunno, but I'm always down or moody or really thinking about things when I can attach to this song the most.
