okay, This is from what I remember way back in frieza saga-
before I regularly watched dbz, I was at a friend's place, sleep over, and at 12:00 ish (he like doesn't sleep) I saw an episode where vegeta turned oozoru (monkie ape monster thing) they like couldn't kill him, then I think Goku remembered the cut off tail, they return to normal thing.. That chubby guy in goku-like clothes with the fat cat after convincing chopped his tail off.. then I fell dead aspeep and he put on MTV music videos full blast and woke me up... oops got off topic :)
yes, it's ssj4 when they get tails... or they wrap it sround their waist under their pants, and put cloth balls to even the fattening from tail up.. here's an SSJ4 pic, of vegeta, proves he has a tail!!!!!!!

actually, Vegeta did have a tail, he fought gokou on earth as oozaru, and you have to have a tail to do that. Yajirobee cut it off.

just rest at this, al saiyans somehow had a tail, or as in trunks position, was either cut off at birth, or removed with genetic work
