Guest Midnight Rush
In the world of Rock/Blues/Pop (Not Britney/Jessica Pop, Rock Pop) men like Mick Jagger, Malcom Young, and Steven Tyler are like "gods of rock" if you will. This topic isn't about them, although they are awesome, it is about the other side: Female Rockers. When I think of female rockers (I listen to mainly classic rock, so I'm not up on the new rock bands), I think of two names: Pat Benatar, and Stevie Nicks. No offense to Pat Benatar, but she is hardly a good representative for female rock stars. Stevie Nicks is my all time favorite singer (sorry Mick lmao!). She has an amazing voice that just blows you away. Her voice is not your classic womans' voice, but has a cutting edge that is pleasing but at the same time harshly sexy. I really can't describe it well but its good. Some other names I came up with were like Christie (or is it Christine?) McVie... blech.. and the one whose name starts with an S and then her last name has a Mc in front of it. So my question is, why, in the Rock and Roll industry, are the lead singer/major band star positions almost exclusively guys?
Shinmaru
So my question is, why, in the Rock and Roll industry, are the lead singer/major band star positions almost exclusively guys?
I just think it's because that's the image most people are used to...they're used to seeing males as the dominant figure in a band. That's my view on it, anyway. Of course, there are increasingly more bands with all-female lineups or females in prominent roles within the band. For a while now, my favorite female in music has been Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Her voice, while good, isn't exactly technically amazing, but it's quirky and fresh enough to really capture my attention. I think her voice really stands out (with a couple of exceptions) on a Sonic Youth album I recently got, A Thousand Leaves. A lot of the songs are more "spoken-word" than actual singing, but I love the way that she delivers lyrics. It's hard for me to describe my love for her voice lol. Some people I know who've heard Sonic Youth just don't get it, heh.
